Scale-Master Posted October 15, 2020 Author Posted October 15, 2020 The front starter bracket, more brass, formed from one piece. I used solder to make the fillet as it is a stamped steel piece on the real engine.
Scale-Master Posted October 19, 2020 Author Posted October 19, 2020 I machined the mounting hardware from aluminum. Also note the Philips heads in the starter case. I'll make the electrical connectors later. For now the starter is done.
Scale-Master Posted October 21, 2020 Author Posted October 21, 2020 The distributor will be an OEM GM item too; a recurved HEI unit from an L82, (like on my real car). I designed the cap and coil in SolidWorks. The electrical connection plugs will be grown on it too, but I won't be using the ring that locks the plug boots in place, it's a pain in real life.
Scale-Master Posted October 25, 2020 Author Posted October 25, 2020 Thank you Trevor! I machined the breather can from aluminum.
Scale-Master Posted October 29, 2020 Author Posted October 29, 2020 Knowing the inside would probably not grow as clean as needed to fit to the aluminum distributor base I grew a jig with it to hold the cap so it could be machined to fit. Worked like a charm too. The distributor base was machined from aluminum. The cap is a cast resin copy.
Scale-Master Posted October 30, 2020 Author Posted October 30, 2020 Thanks Trevor! Oil filter machined from resin stock. It will be a Delco PF1218. (More parts off my real car…)
Scale-Master Posted November 2, 2020 Author Posted November 2, 2020 Finished oil filter. I milled out the mounting location of the block so the filter sits in to it instead of flush on it. Made a decal for the label. I date my filters when I install them. Taking a guess on this one…
peteski Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 You are estimating January 2022 for the completion of this model? Is this the longest time you will spend on creating a model car? I used "creating" because you are doing much more than just assembling a model kit.
Scale-Master Posted November 3, 2020 Author Posted November 3, 2020 No, not the whole project, I was hoping to have the engine done by January 2022. I think two years and seven months is longest I've spent on a single car model. I have a couple stalled projects that span longer, and a '69 Camaro that sat idle for twelve years, before I picked it up and finished it, but I'm only counting active build time.
Scale-Master Posted November 3, 2020 Author Posted November 3, 2020 Distributor base and vacuum advance canister machined from aluminum.

Wow! But I guess at the level of accuracy you are building it, that is not surprising.
Scale-Master Posted November 5, 2020 Author Posted November 5, 2020 I'll be building other parts of the car too. It's not like I'm only building the engine. Like a real car, different areas are worked on as needed to get everything to fit. And in some cases I just make something I'm in the mood to make... And thanks!
Mattilacken Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Your parts always looks like 1:1 incredible good jobb as always!
Scale-Master Posted November 7, 2020 Author Posted November 7, 2020 Thank you Anton! Hold down clamps, nickle wire.
Scale-Master Posted November 7, 2020 Author Posted November 7, 2020 Assembled scratch-built HEI distributor. I'll add the tach and power wires later, the plugs are already on it.
Scale-Master Posted November 11, 2020 Author Posted November 11, 2020 The distributor boots for the ignition wires; made from scratch. (Return of the big ruler…)
Davewilly Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 nice looking details so far. I really like the started and distributor!
Scale-Master Posted November 18, 2020 Author Posted November 18, 2020 Thanks Dave! Plug boots for the wires. Made using the same process as the for the distributor boots.
Scale-Master Posted November 18, 2020 Author Posted November 18, 2020 And I made spark plugs too. Steel and resin; shown with a boot installed.

Any chance you would be willing to 3D print that Distributor cap in 1:16 scale? I would be willing to buy a few. Let me know. Edited November 18, 2020 by Oldmopars
blunc Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 just cast a bunch, the larger scale builders will line up.
