Hey all, I’m in search of a satin black ( in lacquer) that will play nice with flat black and gloss black lacquers. Also prefer something available in a rattle can, I’ve an idea for a build, but the satin black is the foundation color for it.

So I ask you all, what have you found, or what technique have you used to achieve satin black?

I've had great results with Dupli Color.

A couple different combos, their straight black primer will come out semi, sometimes I may topcoat with semi gloss clear to protect, and offers a slightly different sheen.

Also have used flat black with semi clear, maybe even their semi gloss black for another option.

A bonus, I've used semi clear over grey primer to achieve a vinyl or leather look.

I recently discovered that Testor now has a Semigloss Black in the lacquer line. I bought a can but haven't used it yet.

Tamiya TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black lacquer works for me. Just used it on some suspension parts. There's also Tamiya TS-6 Matte Black. Haven't tried it.

I, too, am a DupliColor rattle can user. I recently did a build where I used DupliColor black primer then sprayed a coat of Krylon Color Maxx Clear in the Satin finish over it.

I have also used a Matte finish I purchased at a Michael's (or similar store) but I don't think I have that can to check the brand name.

I have had no paint compatibility issues using either the Satin or Matte finish over the DupliColor black primer.

I may be wrong but I believe the sheen's are in this order (from less gloss to more gloss):
Flat
Matte
Satin
Semi-Gloss
Full Gloss

There may be others but for what you are doing these seem to be the most readily available.

Like you I have used mostly Tamiya paints and their different shades of black for the suspension. The TS-6 Matte Black you mentioned is a fairly flat no gloss black. If you want something even flatter, if there is such a thing, try TS-82 Rubber Black. This spray will cost a few dollars more but I don't know of anything darker or flatter than that.

you want vantablack (the blackest black) but then you'd have to deal with anish kapoor (worth a google to find out why the art world have an intense dislike for him)

I was just reading about that!  The makers of the world’s pinkest pink also don’t seem to like him either:

Thanks all, guess I’ll pick up a can of each of the paints mentioned and see which one gives me the look I’m after.

Thank you all again?

Late to the party!! I've done the three different Tamiya spraybombs, and the results are fine, but I've also painted a fuselage the dominant sheen of black, then masked off and airbrushed different clearcoats. I found this works well, is more economical, easier to mask and clear small areas, easier to control the amount of clear than a rattlecan. Clears are available in lacquers in most sheens. I've also mixed sheens to get the desired effect as well. Had to do this aloooong time ago on a A-26 Invader in a black Korean War scheme. Depending on the desired result, I've mixed Tamiya clear colors with the clear coats for jet exhausts.
