mrm Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 (edited) There is this old anecdote back home, about a man who found a button on the street that he liked a lot and did not want to throw away, so he got a coat made for it. So I got this set of Detail Master aluminum wheels off fleabay with wire inserts that I had to build. The minute I mocked them up, for some reason I thought they had to be yellow. But more subtle, toned down yellow. 12 pieces per wheel and a spray can of Walmart paint later, I had some modern old school wire wheels. Four sets of spokes per wheel, each individually painted and then put together and sprayed once more with the rims, which were also individually sprayed before that. Now we have some hot rod wheels! This made me think what should they go on. I figured that because of their retro nature, whatever they on, it should have a flathead engine. This would be my very first flat head motor ever! Since this whole three-model-mess started with trying to get back into building after over a year off the bench, I looked through a box of bodies and saw a '32 sedan. I had the itch for a Vicky , which started it all. When looking for a Vicky body online, I ran into some resin sedan delivery bodies for sale. I remembered the body in my box and thought "well, why pay the money if I can do this myself". So I did. The original plan was to make a delivery hot rod with the yellow wheels, black fenders and dark blue body, with the engine and grille matching the color of the wheels. But what fun would it be if everything goes to plan?! So, now I am building a maroon '32 delivery with a flathead, which I have never build before, with yellow wheels and color matched engine, but chrome grille. Stay tuned and thanks for watching. Misha Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 Wow! The wheels are a knockout, great colour! Plus the Maroon on the body---- would you consider a fenderless rod? Be following your build, cheers Misha

The one that started the whole let's-build-something-again thing. Check it out under "Sweet Victoria" in this same section.
Koellefornia Kid Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 Nice job on the Wheels! You can't get enough of them deuces, can you? ? With the Family Deuce and the Sweet Victoria, this will make a very nice trio!

The delivery is getting clear coated tonight. Edited October 23, 2019 by mrm
mrm Posted October 23, 2019 Author Posted October 23, 2019 Clear is dry to the touch, but definitely needs some time to cure. Here is a quick mock up of where this is going Stay tuned and thanks for looking
OldNYJim Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 What a great looking build! Those yellow wheels with the color of the body look great!
Mr. Metallic Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 Man, those wheels came out great. I'm a big fan of 32's, so of course you have my attention with this and your other 2. Nice conversion work on the delivery so far. Since you seem to have a 32 addiction like me, have you seen the bodies that Drag City Casting as come out with recently? RPU, chopped 5w and chopped Fordor, all very well done.

Thank you, Jim. Originally I wanted to do the car in the colors of the Phaeton on the cover of last Street Rodder magazine. It is a dark blue car, with black fenders and yellow spoked wheels. But then I saw a Tamiya TS11 Maroon in a pile in my garage and decided to spray it on a spoon, just for $hit and giggles. My wife saw it and said that's the color I should do the delivery. As a matter of fact I was thinking that after the three models I am working on right now, I'll force myself to build something different and out of my "comfort zone". And yes, I saw the bodies. I need to place an order from them. They also have some up-tops for Model A and Deuce roadsters. 18 hours ago, Shambles said: Did you make the decals for the panels? Thanks for the interest John. No, I did not make the decals. I have a box full of decals, both from kits and aftermarket, that have accumulated over the years. I don't know what kit did these decals come from, but there is a chance they came from one of the reissues of the Boyd Smoothster, where it came with a "van" body. The pinstripe decals came from the same sheet and were total pain. Very irresponsive to setting solution.
bisc63 Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 Those wheels are outstanding! Your choice of colors is very tasteful; I DIG IT! Can you share exactly what color/brand of maroon that is? Loving this build - model on!

I have to say, That it was not an easy color to work with, which came as a great surprise to me. It does not cover very well right away and the first coats look very purplish. I don't thin down Tamiya paint. I spray it in a little drinking cup and from there it goes straight in my airbrush. I had to spray many thin coats until I got the uniform maroon finish. Also it was weird as it was pulling away from creases, not from edges like most paint would do sometimes. It was weird and to be honest, I did not have good time using it.
espo Posted October 26, 2019 Posted October 26, 2019 I have used TS-11 on a coupe of builds. I just used the spray can and got good coverage with a couple of light coats. Like you I really like the color and it just looks right on the early Fords, or just about anything up thru the early '60's.

These peculiar decals (Laund E ry) indeed come from the Vantastic van derived from the Boyd Smoothster rod. I think Linberg reissued the old Testor's kit. CT
mrm Posted October 31, 2019 Author Posted October 31, 2019 Hi guys. I have a favor to ask. I dropped one of the rear tires for this delivery Deuce and my dog ended its life. I was using the rears from the original Revell '32 Roadster. Does anyone have a spare tire like that I can use? TIA
Claude Thibodeau Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 Hi! I have Revelll's: Speedwagon and 32 5 window coupe... Do you think they are the same? If so, I could mail them to you friday... CT

As far as I know, it's the only kit these tires came in. I already used a set on my Family Deuce, a set on the T-Touring and I had a third set , from which I only got the rears for the Delivery Deuce, but went for a little more profile with the fronts to suit the character of the build better. I am sure I have some more in some box somewhere, but we were supposed to move and I packed most of my models. But thanks again for the offer.

TIA Just checked my parts box, have a pair of those that I can get at easily- the down side is they have sanded treads. I will look through my stash in a couple of days (if you don't get any local takers) and see if I have some unmolested specimens I can send down from the frozen north.
dino246gt Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 Those wheels are the BEST!!! Awesome projects too, '32s are the coolest!

mrm Posted November 19, 2019 Author Posted November 19, 2019 (edited) In the last two days I made quite a bit of progress on the model. The dash got done. I tried something new (to me). I put a solid layer of 5 min. epoxy on the clear acetate sheet with the printed gauges and then pressed the photoetched piece over. The epoxy seeped out on the side, but most of it kind of bubbled out in the three openings in the middle. Five minutes later I had the perfect clear spherical lenses on my gauges. The steering wheel also got done. The radiator got the treatment next. I sprayed it flat black, then drybrushed it with gunmetal and then detailed the braces and the fan in the body color. All 8 bolts are photo etched. Next in line was the driveshaft. Its the kit's piece, which was painted steel and detailed with another 8 photo etched bolts. This is my very first flathead motor. Honestly, I spent more time looking at flatheads on the internet, than actually working on mine. Its mostly the kit's motor. I wanted to put MCG's carbs, which come with nice photoetched linkage, but besides their web store showing them available, I was told they are on back order. So I drilled them and added some cheap clear elastic string from Walmart's bead isle. At $2.50 for a roll, I think I am set for life as far as scale fuel lines go. The lines got threaded through some DM #1 aluminum fittings and then painted with Tamiya clear orange. Carbs were then topped with machined aluminum air filters, which may have come from Parts by Parks, but I am not sure. I still need to figure out something resembling a linkage, but I intend to keep it simple. I don't think I did too shabby for my first flathead. And I pretty much have a complete chassis with drivetrain. Save for the rear shocks and some photoetched bolt heads I am going to sprinkle. Underneath it's pretty much box stock, except for the rear shocks (I am scratch-building them) and the photoetch. The engine was painted same Walmart yellow as the wheels. Everything between the engine block the rear axle is steel non buffing metalizer. The kit's exhaust was sprayed Alclad high shine aluminum, which I personally think looks better than their chrome. Thanks for looking and stay tuned. Edited November 19, 2019 by mrm
