I guess I'm all over the place with the music I listen to..... Here's a look at some of my listening history from Napster. Seems on December 6th I listened to Tea Leaf Green (jam band), then Black Sabbath (classic metal)........ The next day I went from Thelonious Monk (bop jazz) to Korn (alt metal) then listened to The Cardigans (dream pop)....

That's a pretty eclectic mix! How diverse is your listening?

I listen to and own just about anything. Well over 30 years of buying, collecting, and listening to music. Still have boxes upon boxes of my old cassettes and CDs. And I'm still buying CDs. Before iTunes disappeared, you used to be able to see how much music you had, in terms of number of songs, and how many hours of music you had. If I was to start listening to all of my stuff from A to Z, I had around 450 days of music. Yikes.

A couple of big exceptions though. I do not like country music. Cannot stand the stuff. And I am not a fan of modern R&B or Hip Hop. Andy of that stuff like Drake or Beyonce or whatever is a no go for me. Old school rap like Run DMC or Public Enemy are fine, but that modern stuff is just awful.

I'm mainly a rock and metal guy, but enjoy all kinds of music. Jazz, blues, 80s pop, funk, disco, classical, etc.

Having said that, looking at my current Spotify habits, and seeing what is in my truck right now, and I don't look quite so diverse!

Currently in rotation:

  • In Flames
  • Leech
  • Vy Pole
  • There's A Light
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • Depeche Mode
  • Enslaved
  • McRocklin & Hutch
  • Matthew Good Band
  • Pop WIll Eat Itself
  • Angels & Airwaves
  • Oasis
  • Danko Jones
  • Deftones
  • Faith No More

Cassettes are hot. My son has my deck in his new system and is buying/selling cassettes on ebay.

I don't understand why cassettes are making a comeback.

The sound quality sucks compared to CD or vinyl, they're inconvenient in terms of playback/repeat/shuffle/etc, they wear out over time.

I mean, I'm nostalgic for cassettes and what they represent in my life, but I'm not about to go our and start buying cassettes, when I can still get CDs.

I do love the memories though. Opening a new cassette and finding a huge foldout with lyrics and liner notes and pictures and all the other stuff bands would put in there.

I remember Anthrax had a hologram sticker included in the initial run of State Of Euphoria cassettes.

Slayer's Season In The Abyss had a massive foldout that turned into a poster.

Nonmeansno had an album named Wrong, and it included a membership card for the fan club.

Can't do any of that with a a download or stream.

One word - Analog.  I think it is cheaper and easier for the young folks than setting up a vinyl rig.

I’ve dabbled in vinyl, but haven’t really used cassettes in close to 30 years.  Switched to CDs in the late 80s, mostly stream content nowadays.

My father was a big audio nut so I always had access to the best equipment. I was taught early how to take care of my LPs so I still have them all in good condition.

We never owned 8 Tracks.. we went right to cassettes, with decks in our cars. Never bought any prerecorded, I would record two albums onto a C90. If one got damaged or lost, no problem I still had the albums at home. Just record a new one!

When CDs appeared and everyone was dumping their records, I was buying! I collected most every album I ever wanted on vinyl, at a dollar or two apiece.

About the same time CDs appeared, technology also gave us the programable turn table.  It was limited to the one record side, but you could pick the tracks you wanted to hear in any order. It worked well but would get confused on live albums where there was applause or talking between songs. I still have mine.

Eventually I went to CDs and have a lot of those too.

Sounds a lot like me!

My dad was an audiophile, so access to equipment was never an issue. And when he upgraded, I got an upgrade!

I kind of did the same thing with cassettes. I rarely brought prerecorded cassettes into my cars, but I made a ton of mixtapes.

And I too took advantage of people dumping their collections! Found a lot of cassettes that way, now that people are switching to streaming, I'm snapping up CDs.

The most romantic gesture that you could do for someone in the '80s and early '90s, make a mixtape!

I would trade away these CDs for a kit or two if you were interested, Dan......

Only if your equipment sucks.

I still have most of the tapes I bought over the years, including my original copy of "Autoamerican" which plays and sounds as good now as it did 40 years ago.

I paid almost as much for the deck in my T/A as I did for the car. It's a newer factory Pontiac 5 band EQ deck that's been rebuilt and modified to work in my '85 , which no one really thinks that much of as "high end" but what most people don't know is it's all Blaupunkt  guts in them. They sound great if they're kept up and the head's properly adjusted and kept clean. And, yes, I can play my phone and MP3 player through it too.

But, I do have a 12 disk Pioneer changer sitting in the basement, brand new, still in it's box, to put in the car sooner or later just to keep my options open. ?

But I do find that a lot of disks are victims of "The Loudness Wars".  [google it !!]

BTW, any of you guys ever hear of "Discogs"

Thanks for the offer, but it appears you and I have similar tastes!

Already have most of those on CD! And a few on cassette!

I've been listening to Talking Heads a LOT lately...... I started at their first album, and I'm working my way up their catalogue. I'm at the album "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads" which has the songs from the previous albums, but live...... If I'm not mistaken, Bernie Worrell plays on the live stuff.

Anyone else here like Talking Heads? In songs like "Crosseyed and Painless", they set a funky rhythm and stay with it the whole song........ lot of energy put into the music.......

I have always liked Talking Heads and the "funky rhythm" has a lot to do with it. A lot of their music has a good percussion beat.

I listen to a wide range of music, it depends on my mood. I very seldom listen to music over the internet though. I have a massive collection of CD's, cassettes, vinyl records and 8 track tapes which I listen to. Yes, LOL, you read that correctly, 8 track tapes. In fact, I have an 8 track playing right now. I have an ancient 8 track changer that holds 12 tapes, it's connected to an old analog receiver and hooked up to old wooden cabinet speaker boxes that no modern sound system can ever compete with for thunderous bass from huge woofers and crystal clear highs from multiple tweeters and live sounding voices from the mid-range speakers.

From the Carpenters, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Creed, Beatles, Collective Soul, Pearl Jam, Laura Branigan, Tool, Snow Patrol, Van Halen, Metallica ... well you name it and I like it. Sometimes even country and classical, I keep an open mind.

There's nothing wrong with 8 tracks...... That's what I started with as a kid. Those and Dad's so-so vinyl collection. That's how I learned about groups like Blondie, Alan Parsons Project, ELO, and other AOR and lite listening stuff. Dad wasn't much on anything "rocking"......

Funny story..... I was in my room as a kid listening to a Nine Inch Nails CD, when Dad walked by my room. He looks in and says "I think your CD is messing up. Can't you hear it?" I said "No, that's the music!"

:D

Oh, how I miss the sound of the 8-track tape clicking to the next track. Good looking receiver.

When I hear certain songs today, I still mentally hear that click!

Most of what We had on 8 track we replaced with cassette and then with cd.

I still can tell you when every track change would happen when listening.

My sons don't get it but it cracks up my wife .

Same with record skips!LOL

I have an 8-track player in my car, I have an 8-track recorder too so I can make my own compilations for when I'm out in it. Recording on 8-track though is a nightmare because there's no real way of telling where the tape ends, and timing the number of songs you can put on a track before the next channel kicks in is a bit of an art! Fading the last song out using the levels just before the next channel is something there should be an award for! Lol. I usually just record old radio airchecks on them, it's easier. 8-track is a fun format, and surprisingly excellent sound quality.

I used to record my own 8 tracks too and would try to fit certain songs within a track to avoid the click but not always. I remember the worst thing about 8 tracks was no fast forward or rewind capabilities. At least I didn't have that with my equipment.

Some of the more up market models had Fast Forward function, but yeah, no rewind cos the tape is on a continuous loop. The thing I like about 8-track is, you can change the channel to the next track if there's a song your not quite into that's playing.
