Snake45 Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I recently picked up a Welly ’67 Mustang GT for $10 at Rite Aid to go with the Maisto one I paid $15 for at the gas station (the prime supplier for my budding diecast collection) about a decade ago. The dark red one with white stripes is the Maisto; the bright red one with black stripes is the Welly. We might as well start with the color. Neither seems to be a good match for ’67 Ford Candyapple Red, the only factory red available on Mustangs. The Welly is a bit too bright, being probably closer to the brilliant red-orange of Chevy Engine Red. The Maisto is too dark, but not dark enough to be considered Vintage Burgundy. It’s very close to Testor #4 Dark Red, which I actually used to do some touchup on it a while back. Both are 1/24, and overall shape is very good on both. Some body parts of the Maisto are plastic, such as the roof vents and rear fender caps; the Welly body is all metal and one piece. Detailing is just a little better all around on the Welly. Both responded well to simple 1st degree Snake-Fu on wheels, grilles, headlight stems, and so forth. Overall, I’d say the Welly is the better of the two, but it’s not a HUGE difference. If I’d owned the Welly first and then saw the Maisto, I wouldn’t have bought the Maisto. But I’m fine with both; I’ll probably give the Maisto to one of my grandsons when they get old enough to have some level of appreciation for the thing. Thanks for looking, and as always, comments welcome. Thanks for looking and as always, comments welcome.
Sam I Am Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Snake, I definitely like the Welly better. The only thing I probably would change is the ride height, just a smidge to high for me.
randyc Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Thanks for the comparison. One looks too low, the other a bit high. Both are nice, workable, and best of all, affordable.
Gramps46 Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Thanks for the comparison. I bought the Welly in white last week at Rite Aid only to discover I already had one. The strange thing is the wheels on mine are different from yours and I have not touched them.
Sam I Am Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Looks like the same wheel, only yours are detail painted and Snake's are not.

I painted mine (low parts) with Testor Steel to match the real ones. I don't remember if they were originally black in there like Gramps. Pretty sure on the Maisto they were originally all chrome.

I have two of them both purchased at Rite Aid and they are both the same and I did not paint them. I seriously doubt the clerks at Rite Aid did either. ? The wheels on Snake's Mustangs have relatively flat spokes whereas the white Welly has the forked spokes. I just found it odd that's all. Besides, it is knap time here at the Sunshine Hobby Paradise. Maybe they don't show well in the pics but both of mine have the "forked spoke" Ford Styled Steel Wheels of the day, and pretty accurate ones, too. As I said, I don't remember if the low areas were originally painted black on my Welly but I did paint the low areas Testor Steel. I've always thought of those wheels as "reverse Cragars." They look like Cragars with the spokes hollow and the open areas solid.
vamach1 Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I agree the Maisto is pretty bad. I have not come across the Welly ones yet.
madhorseman Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 Hey Snake, I would agree that the Welly looks a touch better overall. Maisto sits a little too low, on the other hand, I bought one of the Custom Shop Maisto 1967 GT kits. It also has a lowered stance but, works pretty well for that one. I'm still in the "Snake-Fu" ing: process.

randyc Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 Speaking of Bullitt, I found my diecast Bullitt car yesterday. Been packed since 2007 or so. Found a whole box of fun stuff, some of which I had been looking for; some I had forgotten.

randyc Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 Bullitt Mustang I found. No brake detail and I don't have a photo comparison. I do like this one though.

Hey Randy, that looks like the Revell version. By now I'm sure you have seen the original movie car that was made public a couple years ago......anyway. some years ago I also bought and put together one of those. When I took my out of the box it had been put away (and not carefully) in, it looked a lot like that; dirty and scratched.

At least it looks a lot like my Revell, built from the diecast kit a while back. And it's 1/25, not 1/24. Completely different model from the Wellys discussed in this thread.
randyc Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Yes mine is the Revell kit version for sure. I also bought the prebuilt Charger with the bad guys in it. That one is still in box.
DukeE Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 I guess I can't get by the noses of any of them. Had a 289 Convert I showed at MCA, and a KK 429 I did same. None of them look right, save for some 65-66's. The 2 red cars look like they ran onto the back of something, but that usually pushed hood down. Instead it just stops. Jillions made. Iconic car, and nobody can get 67-70 correct? AMT 67/68 Shelby's look ok, the promos/promo based kits. But diecasts, really? Guess I'm too picky about things like that on cars I've had.
randyc Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 I agree. And not just Mustangs. The DM Cutlass comes to mind. A bit flat. But every scale model has some issue. We are constantly picking details apart on here. I seem to be amassing quite a few Mustangs. With the one in another thread, I think that makes 8 in diecast and plastic in 1/24&1/25. In first gen. I have a few others as well of the newer versions. Kinds like when I counted my Firebirds- 15 of those. No one that see my cars notices.
DukeE Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Yeah. A few flaws seem to look better, like the 70-72 T/A's Snake showed with the shoulder pads. LOL. And 65-66 Mustangs come out pretty nice. If Danbury and Airfix could get the nose of a DB-5 pretty dead on, and nail various 300 Chryslers, the Mk2, others, I just boggle at the misses. Welly and Maisto can crush it, even Burago with the Atlantique and the 55 (horrible tires and some oversized trim excused). Think washing a car 40-50 times by hand should be mandatory for anyone trying to model one. No better way to see how curves and surfaces meet. Or what trim sticks out or doesn't. #notgonnahappen. And geez, I looked at the hood of that Bullitt mustang with the hood turn signal indicators. They're recessed, those things look like a vent on a '10 Shelby. Just. NO. I'll just buy stuff that's close enough I won't only see the flaw. Or pass. Quattroruote rescued me in many ways. LOL.
