Ever since I built my first '60 F-100, I've wanted to build another one with more detail and as a short bed. But, they don't come around very often and when they do, they'll hurt your wallet. I was actually thinking about blowing this one apart and giving it the treatment. But, I kept putting it off thinking one would eventually pop up.

So, when I got the chance to trade for this builtup, I jumped on it! Thanx Scott! This is what it looked like when I got it cleaned up a bit.

Stripped clean.

First task was to separate the cab from the body and fill in the rear of the cab.

Next was getting the bed cut down to a short bed. I removed eight scale inches from the front of the bed and ten from the rear.

Cool project! I have two of these 1960 pickups staring down at me from a shelf over my workbench. Also have a Modelhaus 1958 cab. So I’m gearing up. I believe one of my 60s will become a step side from the AMT 1953 pickup. And thinking of using that chassis under them.

Back to the cab. I cut away the old firewall to make way for the new one.

I took the firewall from a '99 Lightning. Yeah, I'm bashing this with a Lightning! I was surprised at how little trimming was necessary to get it to fit. Just needs a little filling in on the wheel wells.

Next, I cut the floor pan from the Lightning to fit. I cut all of the length from the rear and trimmed the sides to fit.

Chassis is shortened to fit. Basically I set the cab on and cut the chassis at the cab wall. Then set the bed on and cut it at the front of the bed. Then I just glued the two halves back together. I assembled part of the engine for mockup purposes also. I still have to make a C notch in the frame above the rear axle.

When I stuck the engine in the frame and saw how far it set back, I just knew I was going to have clearance issues. But, when I stuck the cab on, I have plenty of room!

Thanx Tom! Originally I had two plans for this truck. One was to use the Foose pickup chassis and drivetrain. The other was to use the AMT '53 chassis with the blown Y block from the Revell Del Rio. But, then I came up with this plan.

Great Roger-

I love the Foose pickup and have used two so far. One as my 24 Hour Build last year as well as a second under a Datsun pickup. I have a few more fresh kits bought right for future adventures!

I am watching your project!

I got the second set of wheels and tires made up last night. The centers are from an AMT '62 Bel Air stuck inside a set of Pegasus sleeves with '61 or '62 hubcaps. Tires are from the Lightning.  Not 100% on these either. Almost too stock looking. I have one more idea that I want to try before I make up my mind.

Not real happy with the stance. The rear can't go any lower without making a ton of modifications to the frame and bed floor. But, I may do it to get it the way I want it.

I wasn't able to salvage both tail lights. So, I drilled out what was left and replaced them with aluminum tubing. On the inside of the bed, I simply added a piece of styrene to close up the hole ànd give it a finished look. I'll have to come up with some tail light lenses for it. I haven't decided if I will use the rear bumper or just fill in the slot.

I ordered the paint last night also. I'll be using Tamiya Gray Green and Racing White. If I use these wheels and tires, the body will get Gray Green with a white roof, grille, bumpers and wheels. If I use modern wheels, the lower section will be Gray Green and the top section will be white or visa versa. Either way, the grille and bumpers will be white. Here's a photo with the Foose wheels.

A thought for your tail lights. You could use Bare-Metal foil inside and some clear red paint or cut down any old head light lenses you might have and use that as a lens.

Great progress!  I see you didn’t have the hood side emblems and have puttied over those spots.

Thanx! I didn't. But, I wouldn't have used them if I had have had them.

I think the small red lenses from the Revell Del Rio will work. If not, I have some other red lenses that I can cut down to fit.

I like this wheel choice, and with this choice I think the stance is just right...

I like those wheels also. But, the more I look at the stance, the more I don't like it. I gotta fix it. Whatever it takes.

I guess we are looking for a different stance, are you trying to lay it on the ground? sorta like the light blue one in the first post?

Ha!  I would’ve asked you for them!
I have have one set, which I guess I could putty or epoxy cast from. I know my buddy Victor Collins did cast some 1960 pickups since I have the grille / bumper units. I can check with him to see if he cast them, or if he cast them as part of the hood.

I want level or close to it. Not on the ground. The blue one has a touch too much rake. But, it can get by with it being a long bed. To me, a short bed doesn't look right hiked up in the rear.

I spent yesterday getting the stance the way I want it. I didn't want to do a C notch. But, there was no way around it. I glued a strip of 2.5 x 4 mms styrene on top of the frame rails and then simply cut out the notch. I also had to get rid of the original spring perches and make new ones in the lowered position.

Back to the bed. I cut the section needed for clearance out. Added pieces front and rear from the leftovers of the bed floor. Good thing I saved those! I had to do a little shimming on the ends to get a good snug fit. But, it fits like it should and gives the floor a more finished look IMO.

Right where I want it! No more stink bug stance! Next will be getting the interior worked out. All I could use from the original interior was the seat and dash. I'm going to have to make the door panels. They won't be back to stock. But, similar.

Not a lot of progress this week. Been busy on the farm. But, I did get a lot of little things done. I opened the cooling holes in the wheels and modified the disc brakes from the Lightning to fit.

20200808_124730-1.jpg.0fb9d3ec2b5befa6eb1f47f6044e8432.jpg

I did some refining to the frame notch to give it a little more natural look.

I cut out the X member at the rear and replaced it with a new one to make room for the gas tank.

I made a new mount for the rear shocks with rod and a couple of tabs. I sectioned the muffler and tail pipes from the Lightning.

I added the front springs/mounts.

20200808_124835-1.jpg.923c890318967fec20ee91b7d27f3b8f.jpg

A lot of what time I have had has been spent on the cab.

Firewall glued in, filled, puttied and sanded.

Smoothed the wheel wells.

Removed the old radiator.

Separated the grille from the bumper and opened up the grille.

Removed the fuel neck, door emblems and wing glass.

Scribed in and deepened the panel lines.

20200808_130351-1.jpg.36bf664cc76bb0f9ae72f65115666ce6.jpg

I still gotta figure out how to take care of the half moon hole in the core support. I may just stick the horn back on and smooth the backside.

20200808_130444-1.jpg.66a1a1457fa828aeae346151a05040f7.jpg

I notched the bedside to allow the Lightning exhaust to fit. I think this will be a really cool styling cue when done.

20200808_130815-1.jpg.15237f156517716d56898130ba4c9c7a.jpg

Both colors of paint are now here. I really want to get the wheels painted in the Racing White so I can decide if I'm going to keep or can them. I should be getting a few things in primer very soon!

Being a Ford fanatic I am going to follow your project for sure.

Not very knowledgeable in model kit history, was this a promo or resin body?

Nice work so far.?

Thanx! It's neither. It's an original kit.

I love what you are doing here. To me, the "stock" looking wheels with the hub caps really fit the truck. The modern ones ruin the classic feel. To me, you are creating a truck that I would build in 1:1. I like the understated look, but open the hood and it is modern. Keep up the good work.

Thanx! I've got a couple more ideas for wheels that I want to try. I like the steel wheels OK. But, they're just sooo overdone anymore. I got some primer shot on them last night. It helped them a lot getting them in one color. I think what I didn't like mostly about them was they looked like they had a huge trim ring around them which made them look small.
