Dave Ambrose Posted August 8, 2020 Posted August 8, 2020 I've finished with the maintenance. I activated a feature on the board that will cause the images to load as you scroll to them. This should eventually reduce the load on the server, improve forum response, and decrease the amount of network traffic. At least that's what the forum software vendor tells me. (I'm making the rash assumption they know what they're talking about) In the interim, page loading might be a slower. The server has to go back through and convert all or existing content. All 2,128,119 of them. This will take a while. Please bear with me, and with any luck, we'll enjoy the improvements in a few days.
Dave Ambrose Posted August 8, 2020 Author Posted August 8, 2020 The reindexing is done, and the lazy loading is working. Please let me know if you encounter any problems.
Danno Posted August 8, 2020 Posted August 8, 2020 Thank you, Dave, for all your volunteer efforts . . . And your reasonable and rational moderatorness! ?
Force Posted August 9, 2020 Posted August 9, 2020 The only thing I react to after this upgrade is that the loading of the pictures are quite slow so you have to wait for the to load.

I've noticed that also, when I open a posting or reply it takes several seconds for the photos to appear.

OldNYJim Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 Not picture related, but maybe upgrade related - often when I post a reply (with or without pics attached) I get stuck on “Saving...” and the post never posts...like this: Ditto, adding an image to a post - helpfully the software just did it again when I was posting the image above...it looks like it’s trying to upload it but nothing ever happens... I have a work-around that I’ve been using, but just a heads up Dave. Thanks for all you do for the site!
Dave Ambrose Posted August 13, 2020 Author Posted August 13, 2020 The board software will be getting a major update pretty soon. I think this will all work better once we install the update.
peteski Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 That is what you always say before updates Dave. Just giving you hard time - I appreciate all the effort you put into maintaining this cool place. Is it me, or the updates (major and minor) seem to be occurring more frequently than few years ago. It seems that in the past there were no updates for long periods of time, and now they seem to come every few weeks. On the related note, it seems that the SQL code injection filter problem has been taken car of. We don't hear about the 404 error anymore. I hope I didn't just jinx us! The lazy photo loading doesn't seem to affect my browsing here. I do see the photos catching up when I scroll through posts, but there doesn't seem to be any appreciable delay. I use a Windows machine, and Seamonkey browser.

I use a Windows machine, and Seamonkey browser. It's not your imagination. Updates are occurring more frequently. There was a long period where we weren't keeping on the latest release. There were a few reasons for that, including some health problems at my end. Now, the installer works much better, and we have better infrastructure. So, now, I'm doing a better job of keeping up. The forum software vendor is also doing a much better job on their minor releases. This last one installed in less than 10 minutes, and I didn't need a command line to do it. Most importantly, the last few minor releases didn't break anything. It literally took me two years, but I figured out how to fix the 404 problem. I don't think we announced it because we weren't quite willing to believe it was fixed, and didn't want to put a curse on it in any case. It's been a long road, but all the little improvements are starting to add up.
Tom Geiger Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 The individual posts and pictures do load quicker! The issue I still see on my iPhone is the loading of unread posts using the little newspaper icon at top of the screen. I believe it’s because it’s indexing a years worth of posts. I had sent you a note a while back noting that when I did the load manually and limited to 6 months posts, it loaded much quicker...
stinkybritches Posted August 14, 2020 Posted August 14, 2020 I noticed an immediate difference with pictures loading faster after the update. Now, though, hardly any of the pictures load for me. Just a light gray area where the pic would be. Using Chrome and Brave browsers on Android 10. Haven't tried my pc.
