Which RED OXIDE PRIMER ?

Fellas,

 

I'm asking which RED OXIDE primer do the guys on this board favor. I'd like to be able to use it as a FINISH COAT in some instances, like a chassis or a Rat Rod and such ...

I'd use the same paint brand that you normally use for models. There is a wide range of shades of red oxide though, some are more brown, some are more orange and i've even had some that were pink.

Tamiya makes a red primer now that might make a good topcoat, especially if you put a light coat of Dullcote over it.. I usually use auto parts store brand like Rustoleum for unfinished areas of floorpans though. It works just as well in that application and is much cheaper than Tamiya.

I’ll pipe in that a sealing coat of Testors Dullcote is recommended over any primer used as a finish.  Reason being that primer is porous, so it will retain dust and dirt. It also scratches easy.

Hi Pete L.,

I like red primer too.  Here a 1:25 styrene body with a smoothed out and lightly sanded body, with two coats of Duplicolor Rust Primer;

Covered very well.  Then just lightly rubbed with 4000 grit, wet paper a bit.  Then polished with a regular car wax.

I've had good results with Krylon Colormaster Red Oxide primer.It's not a bright red but it's not too brown either.

Tamiya Dull Red may be another option. The top and interior on this model are painted with it. You may want to hit it with Dull Cote to make it completely flat as it has just a touch of sheen to it.
