iamsuperdan Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Doing up a mild custom on this 454SS. The OBS body style is my all time fav truck, and I can't get enough of these kits. Normally I just build box stock with a little detailing, but this time I'm going a little further, and it will be basically my first attempts at using resin. This is AMT's Chev 454SS kit. I'll be updating the dash and front grille to the 1994 and up redesign. Seats will be Recaros from Clearly Scale. Engine will be a supercharged LSX, also from Clearly Scale. I'm undecided on wheels and colour so far, but I have ideas. Interior will definitely be a dark red, similar to the original SS interior. All I've done so far is clean up the body a little, test fit the grille, and get the first bit of colour on the dash.
stitchdup Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Cool project. When you clean the clearly scale parts make sure to give them a really good clean, whatever release agent they use can be a pest when it comes to painting, but the parts are really good and worth the extra effort
tooltime-fan Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 interesting project. A shame clearly scale seems to be out of business meanwhile, I have some bits of them too
KWT Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Dan, my boy, you have my attention. Where did you get the dash and grill?

Which is too bad, they had some really nice stuff. 6 minutes ago, KWT said: Dan, my boy, you have my attention. Where did you get the dash and grill? Dash and grille came from the parts stash. I have quite a few of these OBS trucks, and amassing quite the "pick n pull" yard for parts. Kits, promos, parts, etc. I should do a diorama with them. Anyway, these came from (I believe) a promo Chev K3500 duallie.

I'm glad I was able to get the '87-'88 Olds Cutlass front end before he closed down shop. As for the dash and grille, they can also be found in the AMT Snap/promo Chevy Tahoe kits.
iamsuperdan Posted August 13, 2020 Author Posted August 13, 2020 Didn't get much done last night. Nothing real exciting anyway. First coat of paint on the Recaros. I find British Crimson in the Model Master lineup does a reasonable job of simulating leather when it dries. And it compliments a Humbrol dark red I use for dashboards quite well. These are pretty much the only paints I use that aren't Tamiya. Also hit the dash with Tamiya Burnt Iron. Does a good job of simulating the dash grey on the real thing. Matches my 99 Tahoe almost perfectly, so I figured it would work here. Did a bit of assembly on the engine and suspension bits too. Clean up and paint to follow. 1
iamsuperdan Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 Slow progress, as usual. Got some paint on the body last night. GM's Pewter Metallic. Thought this would go well with the interior colour. Also got a layer of flocking down. It's almost the look I was going for. Just need to touch it up a bit. 1
cobraman Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Coming along great. Love the color you used on the seats. I think i have to get some of that.
iamsuperdan Posted September 3, 2020 Author Posted September 3, 2020 Thanks guys. Haven't had much bench time over the past week or so. Fingers crossed, more pics tonight.
iamsuperdan Posted September 14, 2020 Author Posted September 14, 2020 Coming along. Most of the trim work is painted now, and I got the chassis painted. I'm happy with how the masking turned out on this. Next up will be fitting the engine into the chassis and scratching building the exhaust. It's a tight squeeze fitting the engine into the bay. But it looks like I can do it without major surgery. Still deciding on wheels. Not sure if I'm going to go with the stock 454SS wheels (which I really, really like) or a set of resin wheels I have here. Could be an interesting look. And for those wondering, these are the colours I went with.
kilrathy10 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 I tell you what.... This is a great looking model, so far... I'm really loving the paintwork for the chassis and the bed underside.... That looks great... I've never even attempted to do that with ant of my trucks... Just seemed to be a little tedious for my skill level... But Man, your effort looks awesome... That's what I'm talking about...
Mattilacken Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Looks great! One of my all time favorite trucks, there are more powerful ones but the look of these ones and also remembering these from back in the day!
martinfan5 Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 Nice mask work!, did you use liquid mask?

Nope, Tamiya yellow tape and a sharp X-Acto knife! I have the liquid mask stuff, and haven't been a bi fan of it. Mayb e I just need more practice with it.
