MPC Texaco station

In the fall of 1970, a new 71 GTX pulls to the pumps of a Texaco station somewhere in the southwest. A friend picked up this kit at a swap meet so I did my best to make it look decent. Kit doesn’t come with a roof or rear wall, or a wall on the service bay side either, so I made some using sheet styrene. The checkerboard office floor is electrical tape. The lot is sheet styrene painted grey primer. I used some accessories from a Fujimi garage tools kit, like the desk and chair and toolbox etc. I’m no weathering expert by far, but I think it looks neat, and it was tons of fun. It looks great, but I think the kit is an MRC, not MPC.

Nicely done, Christopher....... and very realistic looking too. Using natural daylight for the photos is always best.

Chris, that looks excellent.  That is easily the most realistic concrete floor finish I have ever seen.  I have used grey primer before but never achieved the realism you have here.  I too have this garage kit but it hasn't moved to the top of the list just yet.  Thank you for sharing it with us all.

P.S, love the touch of rust where the post goes into the pump island - that is what separates the good from the fantastic!

Thanks for the kind words! I’m no weathering expert but I like the way most of it turned out. To do the floor, I sprayed the sheet styrene with grey primer from the hardware store, then brushed a darker weathering powder over it. I then would drop a small puddle of black and brown tinted thinner and spread it with a brush. It mixes with the powder and makes great “dried up” fluid stains.  Who knows if that’s the best way, but I like it and it was fun ?

Nice work on the diorama! I like that you created the missing walls and a roof. 

I have this kit and have yet to do anything with it.  The gas pumps look huge, and I’d been contemplating adding a second or third bay since there are few one bay stations. My family used to own a Getty station and we had three bays.

This is really well done! Great realism! It reminds me of some of the stations we had here when I was a kid. They're all gone now, replaced by look-alike convenience stores.

Thanks!! Yes the tape works well if you can get each square somewhat even ?

Thanks guys! Yes the pumps do look big IMO. I was disappointed that the kit only came with basically 2 walls. Nothing a little sheet plastic can’t cure but come on...lol give 2 more walls lol. We had a marathon station in town when I was a kid that was real similar. One bay, 2 pumps outside.

I going to have to disagree with you on that. On the contrary, it's a very nice start. Wish i could do so well!

This looks so much like the Texaco station that my grandparents ran when I was a child. The only difference that I can see is that their's had 2 bays. Unfortunately, a Dunkin Donuts occupies that location now. Your diorama brings back a lot of memories. You did a good job on this.

Reminds me of an old Kay-O station on Williamson Road in Roanoke, minus the garage. Was the smallest gas station in town. Had gas, 4 quarts of oil maybe one can of break fluid. Gas was cheap 14.9 a gallon. during a gas war, I doubt you young guys know what this, seen gas at 13.9 gallon. Nice work on the station.
