landman Posted January 30, 2021 Author Posted January 30, 2021 Loaded up the Hot Rod Lincoln on it to see. Looks like we won't be hauling 59 Cadillacs.

Oldmopars Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Great job on the car deck, it looks great. Matches the look of the truck very nicely.
landman Posted February 2, 2021 Author Posted February 2, 2021 The 348 has arrived. Now is the time to decide between it and the stovebolt straight 8. Here are some arguments: A 1938 GMC would likely have run a a flathead 6 or a 6-71 or 4-71. So a custom one could easily run a phantom stovebolt 8. If the custom hauler is to be used on today's roads with a load (i.e.taking some treasure to a car show), then it should have some ooomph. Enter the 348, which was a truck engine I believe. I'm leaning hard towards the 348.
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 I vote 4-71!! No power with a lot of noise. You may not be going anywhere fast but you will sound like you are.? Looks great Pat!! Very cool project!! 1

landman Posted February 2, 2021 Author Posted February 2, 2021 Added a crossmember right behind the cab. The front tubular one will likely hold the hood hinge.

Gary Wallace does and you can also get a Gary Wallace 4-71 from Jamie at Moluminum. I have one coming from Jamie myself. I have cut down a 6-71 to make one before I knew that they were available, but they too would be the best source for one of those, so it would be easier to just get a 4-71. With your skills, you could probably fab one up. You were the inspiration for me to fab up the 6v-53 that I’m working on. Edited February 2, 2021 by DRIPTROIT 71

Mopar - D Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Nice progress Pat what ever engine you decide to use it will look awesome.
gotnitro? Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 This is gonna be so awesome, sounds like a Detroit might find its way under the hood !
Big John Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I would vote for the Turbo chager, Much easier to make out of scrap sprue and a little heat. Which reminds me of another long dead project,,, my MPC Dodge cab over with turbo Hemi.
Warren D Posted February 6, 2021 Posted February 6, 2021 The 348 was in an International school bus I drove in 1980. Gary Wallace's 4-71:

landman Posted February 8, 2021 Author Posted February 8, 2021 Used the scientific method to find the location of the rear axle then made one up using leftover Snap Pete parts.

landman Posted February 9, 2021 Author Posted February 9, 2021 Mockup to set height etc. Looks like we're close. Have to shorten the frame at the front a bit.
landman Posted February 10, 2021 Author Posted February 10, 2021 Marked the height of the frame ends inside the body then scribed the fender lines through. Flattened an area to olace the tubing which will become the hood hinge.
