I haven't subscribed to FSM in years, but if I happen to run across an issue at a time my reading stash is getting low, I'll buy it. Just bought the Feb issue.

The car feature is a 6- page article on building a weathered, rusty Jeep CJ. By comparison, there's an 8 page story on Godzilla fighting Martians, and 4 pages on painting a Phantom of the Opera head.

There's also a 1-page workbench review of the Italeri BMW M1 Procar in Marlboro markings.

If either of these car features appeals to you, grab a copy. If not, you haven't missed anything.

Weathered Jeep. What a leap from military. Breaking the rules.
Sad when Snake doesn’t buy it he likes airplanes (me too, too much online stuff now). Hey Rich, any fun winged stuff going on?

Seems to be mainly a tribute to Desert Storm jets and tanks. Yawn.

I'm actually encouraged that they're doing stuff like Godzilla and the Phantom again.

Not me. Every page of such stuff is a complete waste of my money, as is every rerun of "Light Up a Starship USS Enterprise." I wish they'd bring out a dedicated sci-fi/horror modeling magazine, and if they threw all the figures and busts and heads in there too, so much the better.

Bubbletop WW2 birds unikely. Same with awesome A-model/Sova Gulfstream, Falcon 10-20-100-50, Lear 35-55-60 in 1/72 Does with the Matchbox HS 125-600, Airfix 125 Dominie, and the Aurora Westwind/Jet Commander (Truly lost in trainwreck).

Anyone tried the new tool DC3 by airfix? Esci great, I have a couple, including Aeroflot livery.

Helos in 1/72 pretty plentiful too.

Civil biz jets a thing of mine

My Dad, who flew dozens of military and civilian types, told me that his alltime favorite was the Fairchild/Fokker F28. (His favorite military was the C-121 Constellation.)

This is only the 2nd FSM issue after the demise of SA mag.  Give them a chance to expand on the automotive coverage.  I have been FSM subscriber for over 30 years, and I don't have any expectations that it will even be like SA mag. It is not, and will never be like SA.  but it is nice to see them cover a wider range of subjects (like automotive, Sci-Fi, figures, and civilian aircraft/ships.

To be fair, the magazine title is FINE SCALE MODELER, so to see figures, automotive and military models in it is what I would expect. It's my hope that they add more automotive coverage to it and I know they are working on it, but I don't expect to see them have endless pages of features any time soon.

I think Fine Scale Modeler for what it is it's about as good as it gets if you're building just about anything but cars.  I never have subscribed to Fine Scale Modeler even though they had sent sample copies thru the years trying to get me to subscribe. So when I renewed my long standing subscription to Scale Auto you can imagine my disappointment when I starting getting FSM instead. Needless to say as my subscription ends I'm not renewing my subscription.

I have the Airfix DC3/C-47 in the stash. Great detail, the nose has the right contours to my eye. Haven't decided whether I will build it in civilian or RCAF colours yet.

Actually, if somebody would do an article on lighting up a big rig or something like that, I'd find that a worthwhile read!

Read the Enterprise article, and then substitute your big rig kit for the Enterprise. Done!

I know the techniques are the same, but the subject matter - ?. Besides I've thought about doing a full lit up rig and trailer, but find it to be a daunting task.

I built this one about 30 years ago. I even sent an article about it to FSM, and they paid me for it, but never published it.
If I ever build another one (I do have few more kits in my stash), I'll see if I can write a how-to article about it.

Thanks Patrick!

You want to hear something funny?  I suggested "Peter-built Peterbilt" as the title for that article.  :)

Great looking build. Harder to do back then. Led or fiber optics or both?  Killer Pete.

Thanks CL!  It is mostly LEDs, except for the white-color lights (and the fog lights), which are small 1.2mm 1.5V micro bulbs from Miniatronics.  At that time there were no affordable or small enough white LEDs available.  The red and amber LEDs I used were the early SMD type from Panasonic (purchased from Digikey).  I worked as an electronic tech at that time, so that masked easier form me to look for electronic parts and design my electronic circuits.  If and when I build another one of those, it will be all-LEDs, and I have some better ideas on how to simulate the rotating emergency lights.

There was one place I used LED-illuminated plastic fiber optics: I used those for illuminating lights on the instrument panel.

And FSM never published the article? It's so obvious why I don't subscribe to them. ?

Maybe you should have lit up a tank?
