catpack68 Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 Is there an aftermarket source for surfboards? I know there are several kits that have them.I really don’t want to buy a kit just to get the surfboards out of them.
89AKurt Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 I didn't know there were so many styles of surfboards when I made mine. It would be a great opportunity to scratch build exactly what you want. Just one piece of bass wood should work. I used drawings from sales and surfer forums.
Erik Smith Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 Fujimi and Asuka make aftermarket parts. The Fujimi has short boards and is pretty easy to find. The Asuka one is harder to locate and has longboards. Really, cost wise, it wouldn’t be much more to buy an AMT newest 65 wagon or Surf van to steal the boards from.
tim boyd Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 (edited) Replicas and Miniatures Co. of Maryland offers a package of surfboards (#P-90), recapping about 12 of the best boards that have appeared in various kits over the last 70 years or so. Highly recommended....TIM PS = some of the boards shown here are, IIRC, from the R&M Co of Md. package....TB Edited February 8, 2021 by tim boyd

Post your wants in the Wanted section, could be a modeler or two who are only interested in the car portion of the model kit and you can work a deal. I have traded away my surfboards otherwise I would offer them up to you!
Paul Payne Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Has anyone ever used tongue depressors for a starting point? Laminate 2 or 3 together for thickness, then sculp to final shape? Popsicle sticks could work, too, maybe stain them differently for contrast.

Andy....you are exactly correct. Only one production run of the Street Rod Woodie kit had these parts, however. I can't recall the exact story, but it was intended to be a utility trailer. It was to be an added feature for a future run of the kit, but it got killed partly through the tooling process. Memory is very vague on this, so I am probably recalling some of the details incorrectly. Good news is Round 2 is aware of the tooling. There is a possibility it might reappear at some point, although if so, not clear if it would remain in the partially completed form or be finished. In any case, this is probably quite some time in the future given everything else they have on their plate right now. Best....TIM
catpack68 Posted February 8, 2021 Author Posted February 8, 2021 Thanks guys? I figured it would just be easier to pick up a AMT 65 Chevelle surf wagon I just bought online for the surf boards.

Nice recast of the kit part.
Richard Bartrop Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 It can't be that hard to take some sandpaper to a piece of sandpaper to a piece of styrene and make your own.

Sure, it can be done, but unless you know the various shapes and nuances of the hundreds of different types of boards, not to mention the skegs (thanks, Jairus), you are in for a lot of work. It's not that expensive to collect many of the different varieties found in kits, really, so while you can make your own from raw materials, I suspect this is one of the cases in which most will opt to buy one which is pre-made, so to speak.
keyser Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 Did that trailer come with boards? I have 2 41's, a pre-paint and first issue, don't recall trailer in either.

You're definitely overcomplicating it. The time it takes to type "surfboard" into Google with give you all the reference material on surfboards that you could want. And if you're scrounging them off model kits, you're probably not that picky about the subtle differences between board styles anyhow. Edited February 9, 2021 by Richard Bartrop

No, the trailer was an incomplete offering (just the the basic frame, suspension, fenders); I added the tool box, boards and the board rack which itself was adapted from the the AMT Barris "Grandpa Munster" rail dragster kit. The trailer was not in the in the original nor the pre-paint issues, only in one of the follow-up street rod version issues which differed only in the kit number on the lower corner of the box end. The assumption was that the RC/Ertl crowd made a mistake in allowing that production run to go through with the partially completed trailer runners opened up.... Best, TIM

There are posts going back to 2010 stating exactly what you have said, but very, very few posts in which people have actually created their own. Considering the O.P. didn't ask for a tutorial or links to posts in which people created their own from scratch, then purchased a kit-supplied board, I don't think it was too much of a stretch to suggest seeking out others.
