*Ford FD-100 Pickup*

Recommended Posts

I've started on my second kit and I choose the Foose Ford FD-100 pickup. This is my second built in 50+ years and the first kit (amt 1950 Chevy 3100 Pickup) went ok but I have leaned from my mistakes and hopefully can do better on this one.  This time around instead of using rattle cans which the paint comes out way to thick I bought a Paasche H airbrush.  I've practiced a little with it but need more time with it.  I have the engine put together to the point were I'm waiting on my pre-wired distributor from Model Roundup to come in.

Got a little touch up painting in this morning.  I saw someone online had drilled out the ends of the exhaust pipes so I thought I would do the same.  I painted the inside semi gloss back.  I'm cheap so I have my poor mans magnifying glass for the small detail work.

Hi Bob, nice to see you diving right in to another project! Looks good so far. Another idea for exhaust tips, I always use polished aluminium tubing to simulate stainless exhaust tips. They can slide over the ends of the kit exhaust. Drilling out the ends as you have looks great, this is just another idea to consider.

Thanks for the tip.  Nice looking little grocery getter.

Well...everything seem to be going fine until I decided to see how the windshield fits. I cut the bag and slide the plastic out and started cutting the parts off the tree.  That's when I saw it.  I do not remember doing this but I have to assume I did.  Now I have a problem.

Bummer!  That kit’s chassis is so useful that I recommend buying another kit. Pilfer the glass from it and then figure out another truck to put one under!  Someone here just showed a Revell 50 Ford pickup!  I put one under a Datsun pickup just for fun.

Oh, some caution.. I remember the glass snapped right into that body so sure that it wouldn’t come out again.

Well.....I went to Hobby Lobby this morning when they opened at 9 trying to beat everyone.  When I was there 3 days ago with the wife they had 3 kits on the shelf.  I took one and tried to hide it behind one of the other kits at the end of the model kit area but that didn't work.  They were all gone this morning.  They were busy restocking and I ask one lady if they had any more kits to put on the shelf and she said she really has no idea what all is in the truck. She said it would take a couple days to empty the truck and stock the shelfs.  Guess I'll go back in a couple days.  $16 on sale, can't beat that.

I had some supplies come in and now I have a rolling chassis.  Still have a little touch up to do and the decals to apply but it's not looking to bad.  I tried my hand at weathering on the transmission and headers with some Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color.

Thanks guys.  Got the bumpers and grille primed.  Going to try out my new airbrush and see how it sprays the Testors flat gun metal at 50/50 thinned with lacquer thinner.  I figured it's best to start on small parts in case something isn't right.

Update,

Bumpers & grille are primed and painted. Spraying the Testors at 50/50 thinned with lacquer thinner at 20 psi seem to work just fine.  I'm a happy camper.

Looking great.  The airbrush is a game changer.  Are you using regular "off the shelf" lacquer thinner?  I'm running out of testors air brush thinner I  bought 25 years ago and need to figure out what to thin the enamels with.

Yup.  Cheap stuff at the local Rural King.

I got the interior finished this morning.  I'm not sure I like it or not.  The dark is Model Masters Flat Leather and depending on how the light hits it the paint look not fully covered or it kinda mimics leather.  The lighter color is Tamiya XF-57 Buff.  Maybe it would have came out better if i had put the darker color on the perimeter.  Oh well.....it is what it is.

It looks fine! Remember, you will be looking at the interior from a low side angle, through the side windows, and distorted through plastic glass front and rear! And that hides a lot.

Put it inside the body and see how it will be viewed.  I’d be more concerned if it was a convertible.

Yeah.....your probably right Tom.  I'm looking at my damaged windshield again and I initially thought that I probably scratched it when I removed it from the bag but now I don't think so.  I was polishing the windshield and it didn't help.   I drug my fingernail across the area on the inside and outside and I cannot feel it.  I think it's a factory defect with a bad area inside the plastic.  Never seen this before.

I just did a dry fit of the interior to the cab.  Everything went together well but I seem to have a gap behind the seat and a bigger gap at the dash.  Any idea's for anyone who has put this kit together?  After playing around with it I'm thinking now maybe the windshield takes up that gap between the dash and the cab.  I hadn't trial fitted the windshield since it is damaged.

I got everything washed and dried off so it was time to try the Tamiya Panel Line Accent.  I had already scribed the panel lines the other day.  Looks ok.  I guess we'll see once it's all said and done.  I'll be airbrushing the body later this afternoon.  I decided to use the Ceramcoat Midnight Blue with a little black mixed in.  Like my grand daddy use to say.....hope for the best and expect the worst.
