1948Ron Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 I am 1948Ron. I started building model cars in 1958 when AMT came out with their first 3 in 1 kits. I started with thier Edsel, Mercury, and Lincoln kits and built many kits until age 16 when I could drive. In the 1980's I introduced my two daughter and son to kit building and we enjoyed many hours building kits that they had an interest in. After they stopped so did I until 2020 when I decided to fix up some of my orginal cars that I still had. After completing those, I decided to try to build an example of all the real cars I had previously owned. Found the building was very theraputic doing the Covid lockdown. I must admit that building 1/25 scale models is a lot harder at 72 than is was at 10. Hands and eyes not what they used to be. I enjoy it all the same and am glad to return to it.
Kromolly Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 Welcome aboard Ron! Your story is familiar. Looking forward to seeing your work.
89AKurt Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 Welcome! Familiar story. I have completed, but have more of what my dad owned, and a couple of my cars too on the long list. Be well and proliferate.
TransAmMike Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 Welcome Ron, I also build models as a youngster (tho usually airplanes) then later when NASCAR was "hot" did a few of my families favorites and again due to work constraints stopped again. After retiring a few years ago it picked up again and hasn't stopped. Got a lot of great info on this forum from a lot of great posters. Judging by your screen name, I was born 2 years before you.
hedotwo Posted March 25, 2021 Posted March 25, 2021 Welcome Ron! Your story is certainly similar to most of us here. I'm "only" 68 but share your concern about the physical part of building models (eyes and dexterity), but have learned to adjust my expectations of my finished product and found that I'm just as happy building a nice curbside than I was years ago spending days detailing interiors and engines. A good paint job and foiling can go a long way to making you proud
misterNNL Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Nice to have you on board Ron. a large percentage of us share your background of childhood building. I am 78 and thanks for modern eye surgery my eyesight is not a problem..I had cataracts in both eyes and was told that with surgery I would be blind in my right eye within 6 months. I feel blessed to have steady hands and the energy to still pursue my styrene addiction.
1948Ron Posted April 22, 2021 Author Posted April 22, 2021 Thanks guys. Nice to see a lot of us older guys getting back into the hoppy or continuing to build.
bisc63 Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 Welcome! Sounds like you may have a few classic gems to show us!
The Modeling Hermit Posted May 10, 2021 Posted May 10, 2021 Welcome back. I started building in December of 1959, and have models to thank for many times of easing stress. It's great to not only be able to calm oneself, but have a work of art to show for it.
