stitchdup Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Its interesting to me to see howsome of you guys views have altered (I was going to put change but i think altered is more accurate in this case) in the last couple of years since the other ev thread. a couple of years ago this thread would barely have lasted a day, lol 1 2
Reegs Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Good idea, but until an ev recharges as quickly as it takes to fill a tank with fuel I can't see them being any good for long trips. Assuming there's a recharging station.
Tabbysdaddy Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Other countries have service stations that can swap out the batteries for charged ones as fast as refueling a car. But the cars are built to accommodate that.
keyser Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Oddly, structural batteries becoming a thing now, part of structure. Why that’s a good idea I don’t know. Battery tech changing, and they’re finite parts, so making them hard/impossible to change seems oblivious.

A lot of that is weight distribution, makes for easier battery cell layout, solves a lot of cooling/heating plumbing issues and doesn’t take up trunk/frunk space.
keyser Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 @tbillThat part I understand. But current tech won’t permit it now. Like burying the plugs or v belts under the dash back when they were still consumables. Bad plan for the moment.

keyser Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Yeah. Anything to lower the costs. Wait, what?

tbill Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Not for nothing, but I was under the impression we’d have flying cars by now….. where did that idea go??? Hahahahahahaha….

Tabbysdaddy Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 I think the next logical step is a teleportation device, like in The Fly. 1

keyser Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Yeah. Why I don’t want one. No amount of suspension or tire compound can deal with weight. You can see it wallow exiting first bend, and just pushed then rear let go because conservation of momentum. Pobst was a passenger at turn in. If he can’t save it, doubt few others could. F=ma and newtons 3rd pretty hard to beat 1
Oldcarfan27 Posted September 9, 2022 Posted September 9, 2022 The future is here - Yes it's a real thing and these people are serious! Oh, the irony.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 9, 2022 Posted September 9, 2022 And electricity in Germany now costs SIX TIMES what it did in 2020. Denmark's numbers show it now costs MORE to recharge a Tesla than to fuel an ICE vehicle of comparable range and size. 20 million Americans are currently behind on their electricity bills due to escalating costs here too. Etc., etc., etc.
Danno Posted September 9, 2022 Posted September 9, 2022 And, then, of course, you could live in California, where they will be requiring you to buy an electric vehicle but prohibiting you from re-charging it. ? 1
espo Posted September 9, 2022 Posted September 9, 2022 I have been reading a couple of magazines that have had extensive coverage of EV's and some of the infostructure. The magazines are Motor Trend, Car & Driver, and Road & Track. They are all automotive centric and they do have several writers/editors that seem well schooled on the subject of EV's and the subject of the batteries and motors. I find reading about the manufacturing as well as the disposing of the batteries informative. I have no way of knowing if they really know everything, but I think they do offer some informative information. Since this seems to be the way things are going, I think it best to have as much background information as posable. 2
