looks like we both build out of the parts box......

IMHO, for a true-to-type TROG build there's probably no other way, LOL!

Well @tim boydgot in my head with his post about a motorcycle build and sent me down a new rabbit hole researching TROG bikes! Thank you sir!! I found and ordered an Italeri Triumph 3 HW kit that arrived today. The kit is a WWII-themed bike, but I've got a plan to TROG it up and make a bobber. It is 1/9 scale, so large enough to get some details. First order of business is going to be replacing the plastic spokes with some piano wire and brass. Looking forward to this one. Will post some pics once I have something interesting to share.

Neato! TROG started as a mainly bike affair and its still a major part of the events. TROGster bikes have plenty of character, Looking forward to watching you have your way with this kit. Choosing the Triumph is ideal for this sort of thing.

So I started on the front rim. May regret this move as my eyes are crossed and my fingers stiff from trying to deal with small wire in a tight space. I am using .015 music wire for the spokes and 1mm K&S brass tubing for the nipples. One side of the front rim is complete. Kit rim with plastic spokes on top, wire version below. Think it came out decent looking. No turning back now, three more rim halves to go!

Maybe I'm too old for this, but I'm up and running.

Iron Maiden ?? no, it will be spot welds.

Usually the goal is to get a nice body to paint, this time the goal is the opposite and it's just as difficult actually.

OK guys, gonna add some more idea fodder for those of you who are still pondering exactly what to build for this community build.

Some of you may recall the “Building a Vintage Beach Racer” cover story in Scale Auto magazine (February, 2018 issue), I demonstrated many building ideas with a kitbashed project based primarily on Revell’s 1931 Model A Tudor and 1930 Model A Five Window Coupe kits.  However, as often is the case, a good deal of the original article submission did not make the printed page, leaving some of the key details untold to the readers.  Here's how I am fixing that...with the hope that you find something useful herein for your project(s)....

DSC 0026

There wasn't space to show all the building details of the model project in the magazine, so I'm featuring those additional assembly details in 45 images and captions at this link.   Subjects include about 10 how-to images and captions, including accurately detailing 1930/31 Model A Firewalls, adapting the Revell Model A Five Window Coupe channeled version "skeleton" interior to a highboy (aka non-channeled) builds, and engine and interior detailing ideas.  Plus about 35 overall and closeup detail images of the finished car that were not run in the magazine article.

DSC 0040

Just one example shown in the article at the link is whether to run the side frame sight shields (cut away from the fender unit in the mid-1960's Revell '31 A Sedan/Woody kit and its many reissues), or not.

Here is the just about completed model WITHOUT the sight shields....

DSC 0497

...and WITH the sight shields....

DSC 0498

Either way is correct for a TROG project.  Check out the link for some other ideas....hope you find a useful idea or two...

Thanks! – TIM BOYD

You are a brave man!   Outstanding work.

Got the louvered trunk mocked up on the 29 roadster. Now working on getting the 31 firewall separated from the cowl.

Nothing exciting...20230220_191726.thumb.jpg.426d0a4fae7bc29e5f5b7dd5bc2f7c44.jpg20230220_191738.thumb.jpg.c9482516b0c82cb2dfcd14e81c8b389a.jpg20230220_191809.thumb.jpg.976c43737ee1b69cf3198718d052af92.jpg

The firewall is too wide. Not sure if I should just go with one from the 29 Revell kit or cut the 31 in half and glue it back together.

See is there's enough meat in the sides to thin them down a bit. Even if it won't fit in the notch the 29 firewall does you could remove about 1mm from the back of the 31 firewall and just flush mount it to the front of the body.

Sanded it down, then putty which needs to be sanded down but I think this will work.

I know, it's still rough...

I really love this plastic putty, so much better than the Squadron Putty I used the last time I built.

Well, needing to get paints to weather the chassis and suspension.

Edit: ordered the weathering paints from Hobbylinc and now I wait for 2 weeks or so...

Finished the front rim and mounted the tire. Pretty happy with the result. Started on cleaning up all of the motor parts and got a few sub assemblies glued together.

Ok, if that's what it takes then.
I've been pretty aggressive about scrap boxes since I restarted during the pandemic thankfully. Now it paid off, AMT slicks and front tires, AMT 49 Ford rear rims, Revell I don't know which kit AND
AMT 62 Corvette wheel backs the wrong way plus Moon caps from AMT 25 Ford, phew

My respect to all of you that get styrene to look like bare metal. Nowhere close yet, but already done 4 layers. It might be 1/2 way there. Dry fully, sand down the rough spots and go at it again...20230306_150023.thumb.jpg.d65e84937db415141046ccbb00d9d45b.jpg

I finally finished a bike and support vehicle. The bike is from the '32 chrysler set i chopped the fenders off to make it a bobber. Also added light weathering and the number plate.  The truck i tried to make a 50s/60s shop truck with a cadillac 356 with a 4-71 blower, cheater slicks, and racing side exhaust from the '49er ford. The trailer is from the '63 nova wagon kit along with the gas cans, helmet, and tool box.

Small victory. It took me 3 days to paint a trunk but I think I'm happy with it. Aaarrrggghhh. I see where i need to touch up still.20230307_211449.jpg.71d298e24b92babfb68955f2547c8e1e.jpg20230307_211456.jpg.275028ba4b7c1e31ca7834835b36684d.jpg

Okay, my last trunk post... now to the rest of the car.

The details of the weathering certainly look promising and worth the effort. Looking forward to a more distanced shot.
