Bullybeef Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 (edited) This is going to be a huge departure form what you usually see me build! I’m building a replica of my 1976 Vw Scirocco, I’ve owned her since 2002, and I’ve been around mk1 vws since 1991, so yeah it’s a subject I know well. Follow along as I try to make this old amt kit look like my own car. first step is to make the engine look correct Edited October 23, 2022 by Bullybeef 4
ea0863 Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 What a great topic! Giorgetto Giugiaro hit such a home run with this beautiful style that it still looks awesome today! I will be watching with great interest 1

Reuhkapelti2 Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 Here's another follower. I have a soft spot on these VWs, as I had '79 VW Derby 1300LS many years when I was still young. Briigth yellow with same yellow alloys, GTI flares, tuff suspension etc. Some day I will make a model of it, even if I have to scratch build it. 1
rrb124@sbcglobal.net Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 Really good! I have that unbuilt kit in my stash. Had a real 2015 GTI and now a real 2019. Loved the early Scirroco and Mark 1 and 2 GTI's. I have several unbuilt Mark 2 GTI kits in stash. Excited to follow this. 1
stitchdup Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 Great kit to build. make sure to paint the front of the interior tub when you paint the body, I didn't and its the first thing you see when the bonnet is open, and there are no driveshafts in the kit, just the metal axle but some bunched up heatshrink on the wire axle gives a pretty decent driveshaft boot effect without having to re-engineer the kit 1

And the greatest thing is that I don’t have to scramble around the internet to find source photos, I can just go to the garage and look at it hahah. 1 1
Oldcarfan27 Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 I'm watching. I need some inspiration to build mine! 1
Bullybeef Posted October 22, 2022 Author Posted October 22, 2022 Attempting to add some correct detail to the lump. 1
Bullybeef Posted October 23, 2022 Author Posted October 23, 2022 Well as I had kind of feared, the automotive touch up paint, was a little too hot even with primer, but that is entirely ok, as the paint t on my car is actually a 10 footer as it is so art imitates life haha. 1
JollySipper Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 I've had some clear craze itself and wasn't sure how to sand it without sanding through the paint...... I went at it with some Comet and an old tooth brush (that has more uses than you can imagine...). That may work on your crazing there. Just scrub it smooth, and put one more coat on of the color. I really like these little cars! Where do you plan to source the wheels for it? 1

Where do you plan to source the wheels for it? 3D printed, had a friend design and print them, picking them up tomorrow! like I said it’s paint is not meant to be perfect, I painted the car in a garage with one light and rattle cans in 2007. espo Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 Great looking color and the engine detailing looks good. I like the picture of your garage and your other cars as well. 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 Cool project. I really lusted after one of those when they were new...a kinda dark metallic cobalt blue IIRC. I'd about forgotten how much I liked 'em. 1
oldcarfan Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 I'm looking forward to this build. I had this kit as a kid and gave up on it when I broke many pieces. I have a reissue that I'll be getting to, 'one of these days' which means I have no idea when it'll get built. Anyway, looks like a good start. 1
Bullybeef Posted October 23, 2022 Author Posted October 23, 2022 Well the kit has a very anemic looking exhaust system with a boring looking stock manifold, Wretched had a long tube 4-2-1 header, so a quick dig in the header bin turned up a small block ford header from the 32 ford kit… strange that I have those in my parts bin lol. So a little slicing and dicing I’ll have a pretty close approximation of what’s in the car. Also not pictured I did a quick wet sand on the body and it seems to a little better, I’ll try another coat of paint and see if it smooths out. Replicating the trim on the car will be a bit of an effort of my masking skills as all the windows are rubber mounted with a stainless trim inset. 1
Bullybeef Posted October 23, 2022 Author Posted October 23, 2022 And after all that tedious work above, you realize you cut the wrong header and have to do it all over again Hahahha??♂️
JollySipper Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 I've seen where some guys have done your type of window molding/trim by just foiling per usual, then running some panel line accent around the edges of the foil. Looks super realistic! 1

Looks super realistic! I've kinda done that but used regular Testors semi gloss black around the side windows. For the windshield and read glass I used black BMF and scraped the black off the center to look like the stainless lock strip in the rubber. I've done two AMT Rabbits this way so far. Great work on the header Bil, and the 1/1 looks awesome. That yellow one in your garage looks pretty healthy from what I can see in the pic,, any more pics? 3

I’ll see what I can come up with, the header is on version 2 atm, thanks for the props on the actual car, and no I do t have anymore pics of the yellow one right now, it was a bare rolling shell at the time the photo was taken.
