White Rabbit Posted April 14, 2023 Author Posted April 14, 2023 Hello all! I would like to declare a change in my entry for this year's CBR. Originally, I proposed the Delorean with an H12 engine. I do still like the idea, though, I don't believe that I have enough time for such an involved build as my current project (a replica of the 1971 Ferrari Daytona Cannonball winner) is taking longer than anticipated. Therefore, I will be changing my entry to a 2016 Mercedes AMG GT. I chose this car as I had a few criteria for the build: a relatively new car, opportunity for some mild modifications and a true GT (to paraphrase Clarkson: a GT is one that can traverse long distances at a high rate of speed in complete comfort). Also, being a German car, it's made to run 150mph on the Autobahn all day; certainly beneficial for the Cannonball.

KWT Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 Well work was a little lighter than normal this week, so I got to get out a little early than normal... only worked 8 hr shifts this week... so I got the body primed and painted through the week. Unfortunately, I started painting with a partially used can. Shaking it I thought, yeah that's enough... It started to sputter and I ran out just before finishing the wet coat. Internet buying here we go again... 1
MeatMan Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 (edited) Hey gang, I haven't updated in a while so here's a quick one. I finished my engine yesterday. I was a victim of my desire to add upgrades to the fine engine kit I bought but I think it was worth it. The engine kit is a basic Vega Cosworth engine with the standard FI with all of the emissions gear of the time. I wanted to add a turbo, air cond compressor, and power steering. I changed the intake to individual throttle body, and fabricated a new plenum. The first pic below is a pic of the instruction sheet with the kit layout. I misplaced my original front cover so I had to use the instructions. The next pic is the 3D model of the one I created using a front cover I designed in CAD, and the pieces I added from files I bought from 3D Model Specialties. I used Meshmixer to blend them all together. The last few pics are the completed engine attached to a Tremec 6 speed that I forget where I got it from. The bellhousing is cut from the engine kit tranny. I'm nearly done with the chassis so hopefully I'll have some pics soon. The body has one stubborn area that I can't seen to get smooth. I primed it again yesterday and the ghost seems to still be there but less prominent. Edited April 23, 2023 by MeatMan 1
landman Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 (edited) I have decided to enter with a 1951 Chevrolet. I intend to keep it as stock looking as possible so as to not attract the attention of the law. However it will have Oomph. Here's a few options, Corvette C5R, 2010 Camaro, LS3 V12 with OBX induction, 427 with OBX induction. I understand some of them may not meet the criteria. Edited April 23, 2023 by landman Typo. 3

It did not say that it had to be a factory option. It says should be production based, but not that it had to be. Racing is stretching the rules to their max! http://racecast.com.au/v12ls/ Expand Hello all! I just wanted to add my take on this interesting discussion. Indeed, for those of us who follow motorsports, we know that teams do indeed scrutinize the rule book and interpret the rules to find an advantage over their rivals. And, regarding engine type for our purposes, there is certainly some interpretation here as well; particularly with the bolded words in the above quote. Looking at rules D and F (below), the LS3 V12, according to Racecast, is based off the production V8 version, but, probably more important, is that it is available to the public for street use via the aftermarket. That is, it's not simply a fantasy engine as it does exist and would not preclude someone with the ability and finances to build and run such an engine. This could fall under rule F regarding modifications to the vehicle. In my view, the engine would be allowed within the rules primarily due to having been borne from the production LS3 V8 (the video below has a good explanation of the engine) and is offered for street use. In the end, we're all here to have fun, yet keep it fair; that's where rule F-1 comes in: that the spirit of the rules should also be observed (as is the case in motorsports as well). That is, a full bespoke race engine that was never intended for street use would not be keeping in the spirit of the race. What say our fellow competitors as well? "D. Engines should be production-based. Any type of car and/or truck engine that was/is available to the public is permissible: internal combustion, both piston and rotary; hybrid and pure electric (EV)." "F. Modifications to the vehicles are welcomed and encouraged. 1. Modifications should be realistic to keep with the spirit of the race." Edited April 25, 2023 by White Rabbit 1
