Smart-Resins Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I do so very very little airbrushing that it usually does not effect me. When I am casting resin, I know it will kick on when the pressure is around 35lbs in the pot, so it does not bother me. However I have been making some new molds this week and 2 days ago, after putting the new mold into the pot, I busted open a book and started reading. After a couple of chapters, that SOB kicked on and I hit my head on the head of the bed! I cussed and the wife came in laughing her but off! I was not so appeased as she was! LOL. Worst part was, I was reading a Margarett Weis book and just as I read about the dragon looking into the window, it hit, so it almost brought the story to life. LOL. Jody
MrObsessive Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Yes!! But even funnier is when one time it kicked in and it scared my two cats straight up into the air and they immediately started fighting practically in mid air! Now whenever they see me reach for the compressor, they make a QUICK exit!
Jairus Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Once in a while that happens... But my compressor has a switch on it that I keep in the off position until the air pressure is noticeably too low. I do that because I hate it when it kicks on just after going to bed when I just get my "spot" warm.
Helipilot16 Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I placed a shut off valve btween the compressor and the airbrush hose. I keep it shut except when airbrushing. The tank stays full and the compressor never comes on. With this system I'm using a two gallon Campbell Hausfeld compressor. It has to run so little it doesn't matter that it's a little noisy.
mageckman Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 While I have had something similar happen to me before, it wasn't while working on any models. I rarely use an airbrush for painting my models, so my compressor is not in my hobby room. I have a big mobile compressor I use for working on 1:1 cars, and it is quite loud. I tend to get lost in what I am working on, depending on what car it is, and what I am doing to it. I do not have a garage to work in so all my automotive work is done outside in decent weather( I try anyway). My wife generally sits out and watches me work on the cars. She worries. One of her friends husbands was stuck under a car for about half an hour when it fell on him, years ago. I was working on my wife's dodge the one evening, and forgot the compressor was right behind me. I was under the hood checking something( I don't remember what, CRS kicking in), when it kicked on. I raised up, it surprised me that bad, and smacked my head on the underside of the hood, knocking the hood prop out of place and the hood crashed down on me in the engine space, to top it all off, my wife was sitting out there watching me and it spooked her (Due to her medical condition she has a problem with loud noises). She was crying, laughing, and holding her ears all at the same time. I had smacked my head on the air filter after the hood came down on me so I was a little dazed. It took her a few minutes to realize the full extent of what had just happened, and it took me a few minuites to get the world to stop spinning. Needless to say, if I am using my compressor, I pay alot more attention to my surroundings, nowadays. I don't want a repeat of that day to ever happen again. Though looking back on it now, even though it hurt at the time, it was rather funny. Mageckman
Harry P. Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I have a small "silent" tankless compressor, when it's on it's on all the time, so no sudden noises. It's not actually silent, but it's pretty quiet.
MR BIGGS Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 I picked me up a JUN-AIR compressor from one of my buddy’s. It is the one's they used in dental offices. The only way I can tell it's on, is by looking at the green light indicator it has. It is 3 or 4 time quieter then the refrigerator, so now I will never have that dam compressor come on and scare the #### out of me again.
george 53 Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I got an Iwata "Smart Jet" and it only kicks on when your using it. Now all I gotta do is LEARN how TO use it! And the 2 airbrushes I also own!
Steven Zimmerman Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 No,but I've had the wife come up behind me while workin at the model bench and scare the livin ****outta me.she thought it was SOOOOOOOO funny..............'Z'
Cornpatch Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I have a small tank type compresser and it only comes on when your using it. So no problem there. I have a 3 year old grand daughter, that when she is here likes to sneek down the stairs and across the basement and jump thru the door of the hobby room, and say hi grandpa. Scares the be jesus out of me every time she does it. The dog in the picture is another one that walks silently, and will come up behind you when you not paying attention and stick her cold wet nose on you arm, scaring the heck out of you. Jeff
Clay Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I dont use the compressor, but before I found my wife's old radio, she use to jerk the door to the garage open and scare the heck out of me that way.
LoneWolf15 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Bigg , It happens more often then I want it to ! It seems the more that I'm out in the paint room , I don't jump as often. It's those periods where I might go a couple of weeks without airbrushing that get to me . A couple of weeks ago, Kath and I were working down in the shop on some new builds. The compressor kicked in and Kath jumped in her chair , smacking her knee off the shop table leg. I started laughing , Big Mistake ! I was baremetal foiling . I had a surgical blade in the knife. When she banged the table with her leg , it jarred the knife and it started rolling. I was paying attention to her, not the knife ! It rolled off the table and stuck up right in the seat of the chair , right between my legs , high up . I was sitting there with my mouth wide open , my honey looked me dead in the eye, and just smiled with this completely evil grin . " Who 's laughing now " Sweetheart " ? she asked. Scary , Bro , Very scary ! The Old Man
Ron L Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Everyone in our house jumps when the 60-gallon fires up, me especially since I stand right next to it when I'm at my workbench. Of course it never comes on when airbrushing as that tank lasts for months if I just leave it off. One time I forgot about our friendly neighborhood 3-legged cat sleeping in our laundry pile, and when the compressor turned off I heard him hissing at it. When I looked at him he was meowing at the compressor and gave it the dirtiest look, then he hopped on out of there. He still sleeps here but I don't use the compressor when he's around. Funny guy, not much bothers him. He even let me vacuum him with the shopvac while he slept.
curt raitz Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I usually unplug the compressor when not using it, but will forget to occasionally...with pretty much the same results as listed in previous replies. My hobby bench is in the garage and what startles me is when the wife or daughter hit the garage door opener as they are pullin' in the driveway...it's a noisy beast
CAL Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Well, if my old compressor ever gives up it's ghost I will probably go to N2 gas, but since it is old there is no auto shut-off so. Nope can't say that it's happened to me, but I could see how it could.
samdiego Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 there's a Depends commercial in there somewhere
59 Impala Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Every time it comes on when I'm working on a build and it's very quiet in the room, it scares the ###### out of me. Dan
evilone Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 It hasn't happened to m my compressor runs constantly. But i was out painting with spray cans and concentrating on making a perfect paint job and BOOM someone blows up a home made M80 about 10 feet away from my location.Scared the holy ###### outta me and messed up the paint job .
