ModelcarJR Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 This is the AMT kit that I purchased the other day. I have built the Revell kit and have another in the closet but wanted to see how the AMT compares. Both have what I can only describe as a long lump of plastic that runs the length of each side at the bottom. So I first eliminated that and may add plastic rod at the bottom of the rocker panel for stainless trim. I also got rid of the plastic on the top of the door and rear window. I also had to do the same to the interior to follow the profile of the door and rear window. I noticed that the interior wasn't tight in the body (too much space between the body and the interior) so I added two pieces of plastic strip to each side of the interior to tighten up the fit into the body. The rear window trim looks flat enough so I left it alone and added panel lines to the tulip between the corner of the rear window and the trunk line. Finally, I glued on the front and rear valance panel as I can still fit the chassis into place with both glued in. This way I can avoid glue problems after paint. I think they are glued in cleanly and I can see if there are any issues once I get some primer on it. The hood fits well and I will sand down the sides to account for paint. It should be ready for paint once it is washed. Thanks for looking! ? 3
mustang1989 Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 GREAT job on getting rid of that strip at the lower rocker panel JR!! The interior to car body fit at the sides is something that I keep forgetting about on my builds and I'm glad you brought that to light. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this beauty bud.
NOBLNG Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Nice work so far. What did you use for paint on the white one? Thx.
David G. Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 The body mods (corrections?) are nicely done. I'm interested to see where you go with this. David G.
ModelcarJR Posted January 31, 2023 Author Posted January 31, 2023 Thanks, Joe, Greg and David! I appreciate your comments! Greg, I am not sure what paint I used since its been so long ago. I can't find my build sheet so its probably lost. I know it not an enamel or it would have already yellowed by now and I rarely use enamel. Neither Testors or Tamiya make a good white in my opinion, so I probably used Krylon. When I paint white I usually use Krylon Flat White as a base with or without a primer, then Satin White followed by a couple of coats of Krylon Clear Lacquer. With the 48 hour rule for Krylon, I usually paint the flat, wait 20 minutes for it to flash dry, then satin white for a smoother finish, wait 20 minutes, then two coats of Krylon clear about 15 minutes apart. Wait 24 hours and then rub out. Thats probably what I did. I don't like to use the Krylon Gloss as it runs too easily. 1 1
espo Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Looks really clean in white with the gold interior. You mentioned the "lump of plastic" running along the bottom of the body. The Camaro offered many trim options, and this would have been part of one of those options. Just build it the way you like it. Like the little details like the one year only hub caps on the rally wheels.
ModelcarJR Posted January 31, 2023 Author Posted January 31, 2023 (edited) Thanks, David! I appreciate your comment! But there must have been no survivors for the Camaro with the trim on top of the indent of the rocker panel. Maybe they were trying to replicate the full trim chrome panel with the little curl at the top that looks like this: But I think they missed the boat as the curl is under the edge not on top of it. The other trim looks like this. I used a .030 rod to simulate the latter and it looks a little big but its what I have. Edited January 31, 2023 by ModelcarJR fix photo 1
David G. Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 (edited) That works, it looks right to my eye. David G. Edited February 1, 2023 by David G. typo
espo Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 Your picture of the Black Camaro and the trim you are adding represent the most common trim style, and what was on my Camaro as well. I think what AMT may have had in mind was one of the upper levels "Custom Trim" options that they offered. The wider trim around the bottom edge of the side windows was part of the trim upgrade. I think the basic trim looks a lot cleaner on the Camaro.
ModelcarJR Posted February 3, 2023 Author Posted February 3, 2023 Me too. I am aware of the "Custom Trim" package that both Revell and AMT have chosen to replicate. Tim Boyd did a review of the Revell kit several years ago and described it. But I just don't know why both companies would want to produce a model that is so unusual that I can't even find one on the internet. I even looked up production numbers for 1967 Camaros and find that even GM doesn't know how many Camaros they produced in total. Numbers range from 195,000 to 220,000. Never mind trying to find "Custom Trim" packages. And the execution of the "Custom Trim" package on both kits have the plastic lump on top of the indent. It would have been better with a separately molded chrome piece with round trim on top and bottom inside the indent. Or they could have just reproduced the most common trim like I have tried to do. Still not sure about the back window and if it is flat enough. But if I remove it it will be really hard to round the corners of a flat trim piece. So I'll leave it alone. Thanks for looking and thanks for your comment! Keeps me thinking and at my age that's a good thing! ?
espo Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 I picked up a book on the Camaro many years ago written by Michael Lamm called The Great Camaro. The book was published in 1979 and Mr. Lamm had gotten a lot of development information as well as option information and many production numbers. I looked at it today and was unable to find the number of cars sold with the exterior trim levels outside of the Super Sport, Rally Sport, and the Z-28. The book does list the number of total production for each model year for both domestic as well as export. The book also lists the number of cars sold with a V-8, but not by horsepower rating, 6-Cylinder, 3 or 4 spd. trans. as well as auto. The listings include the number of cars that were sold with Air Cond., Power Steering, and Power Windows. The numbers the book provides for 1967 states that they sold 220,917 total including 13,868 export cars. I would be glad to share any of this information if you think it would be needed for your build, or if you are just curious about the number they show as sold.
ModelcarJR Posted February 4, 2023 Author Posted February 4, 2023 Thanks, David and Csaba! I appreciate your comments! David, I don't think I need the information but its always nice to have those kind of books that were written more contemporaneously. The internet is not a good place to find actual, historical information. I may be able to get started with painting tomorrow. I painted the hood for the El Camino today that I want to finish before I move on to the 67 Camaro. 1
crazypainter Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 Looks great -I just got 2 of these kits---surprised that there is not a ton of aftermarket parts for these kits-3d etc.
ModelcarJR Posted February 5, 2023 Author Posted February 5, 2023 Thanks, Carl and Charles! I appreciate your comments! Painted the body today and got a few other parts in primer. I thought the paint looked good but when I brought it in under the light I discovered that a few pieces of trash had landed on the top. I've sanded it out and I'll have to touch up the top tomorrow but the hood and the rest look good. Two coats of Tamiya Light Blue Metallic over a base coat of Tamiya aluminum. It should rub out fine and I hope the top will touch-up alright. Interior will be black. Thanks for looking! ? 6
ModelcarJR Posted February 6, 2023 Author Posted February 6, 2023 Thanks, Jeremy! I appreciate your comment! I re-painted the top today along with all the other pieces. I had to repaint the top twice. the first time the blemishes didn't go away. So I sanded out the top with some wet 400 grit sandpaper which, of course burned the metallic a bit. So I then repainted a second time and clear coated. I'll rub it out in the morning and see how I fared. Still a couple of small divits in the paint but I hope to minimize their appearance. Thanks for looking! ? 2
ModelcarJR Posted February 6, 2023 Author Posted February 6, 2023 Thanks, Carl, David, David, and Mike! I appreciate your comments! Seems like a lot of work just to paint the water bottle and doghouse but it looks so much better sprayed than brushed. Took me most of the afternoon but its gonna rain the next couple of days so I wanted to get it done before I rub out the body. Here's where I started: Once the water bottle was painted I pulled the tape inside the doghouse, taped off the water bottle and added another piece of tape over the openings in the front valance panel: After painting the black, I pulled the tape and voila! 3
