Deathgoblin Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Just finished this one yesterday. This is the Revell kit, mostly box stock. I added some sand on the interior and a couple of beer cans (was going to put in a bikini, but couldn't find one to scale). The surfboard and the rack are handmade. Couldn't get the tie-downs to work without tearing the lugs off. :) The woodgrain is Washi tape, I used it like BMF. 5
Chuckyg1 Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Nice ride, it looks good in white. What is Washi tape? Never heard of it, but it looks great.
Deathgoblin Posted February 22, 2023 Author Posted February 22, 2023 Washi tape is a paper based tape from Japan that comes in a LOT of patterns. The ones I got were a light birch pattern and more of a maple or oak woodgrain. It took me a couple of tries to get it right. I originally tried to trim out the darker parts on the kit and ended up pulling a chunk of paint out. Had to strip and repaint the whole thing. The ones I used worked well over Wimbledon white basecoat. I'll post some more pics later.

My sister showed me that stuff the last time we were in the Michaels store, all sorts of possible tape possibilities. Here's their woodgrain one: https://www.michaels.com/product/rec-washi-tbe-sm-wood-grain-5p-10683797
Street Rod Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Great looking model! That’s a neat idea with the washi tape.
Zippi Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Great looking 49 Merc Surf Wagon. That Washi Tape looks good. That should work pretty good for the bed of a truck. Better tie down that surf board before you head to the beach.
David G. Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Looks great! Nice work on the wood, I'm going to have to look for some of that tape if I ever get around to building the Woodie I have in my stash. David G.

happy grumpy Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Great work on the merc and I agree. That Washi tape is a great idea to paint patterns.
espo Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 Like the finishes on your build. I'll have to check out the tape you mentioned. I have always done a paint or decal wood finish. This Mercury is a favorite subject and like your build style here.
ewetwo Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 Nice build. I like the light colored wood. Looks like you aged it just s tiny bit. Looks nice.
Perspect Scale Modelworks Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Nice Woody you have there?. Where did you get the washi tape. I've been searching but none look as good as yours.
