Phildaupho Posted November 7, 2023 Posted November 7, 2023 (edited) This model was built for a group build on this forum to closely resemble how the 005 Corvette Grand Sport raced at Sebring 1964 by the Jim Hall – Roger Penske team. When Chevrolet withdrew factory support of the Grand Sports, 005 was sent to Jim Hall for the 1964 season. Jim Hall was busy preparing his Chaparral’s for the upcoming racing season so he sent the car to Roger Penske’s facilities for race preparation. [Due to a regulation change the Chaparrals were not eligible to race at Sebring in ‘64.] The 005 qualified sixth overall and actually lead the first lap of Sebring ’64. Five hours in a half shaft broke which the team replaced with one commandeered from a Corvette in the parking lot. After a lengthy repair 005 finished 18th. The 005 was distinctive from the other two Grand Sports entered in that for most of the weekend the hood louvers were taped over and it had two differential oil coolers mounted on the rear deck. Missing from the 005 Grand Sport were the horizontal chrome bars on the front fender vents and the grill up front. The front turn signals were either non-existent or set deeper than the other Grand Sports. I am very happy to have this project completed as it definitely was a struggle which I chronicled in WIP posts [link below]. There is a lot to like about this kit but some of it just does not go together very well without modifications and manipulation Edited November 7, 2023 by Phildaupho 8
Yeah Nah Posted November 8, 2023 Posted November 8, 2023 Lot of effort and work but turned out great Phil! Thanks for the back story of the real thing too.
absmiami Posted November 8, 2023 Posted November 8, 2023 Well done - now that you’ve reached the finish line i must remind myself that my self imposed deadline is the March Sebring 12 hours race - so ive got some serious catching up to do …
Rich Chernosky Posted November 8, 2023 Posted November 8, 2023 A very nice job Phil. Great back story too.
Pierre Rivard Posted November 8, 2023 Posted November 8, 2023 It looks very very nice Phil. You've made the kit tires work, which I was not able to. You have paid attention to the specifics of this car at that race (oil coolers, hood louvers etc) which beautifully captures a moment in history. Congratulations on mastering this difficult kit.

Thanks Rich - I bought the Grand Sport book shortly after buying the kit so many years ago but only read it in detail while building the model 5 hours ago, ChrisR said: Very nice!! Thanks Pierre - Your WIP on your Grand Sport was a huge help to me. Thanks everyone for your much appreciated comments - I could not resist posing the Grand Sport with two other Jim Hall cars I have built models of. The 2D was self converted from the Daytona spec kit and the Trans-Am was converted from the split bumper kit. 1
Hoffman Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Phil, I'm late to the party. You finished it!! Awesome. The model turned out great. Very authentic, excellent attention to detail. Fixing the ride height......that one item makes a huge difference! You should be proud. Well done! PS: Love the group shot. I've seen the Camaro in person several times at the Coronado Island road races in San Diego. I got to pour over it up close in the pits. You nailed it! Great collection.

Thanks Tim - I too have seen the Camaro a couple of times at Laguna Seca. Also saw the D2 there and managed to pose the model with the real car and afterwards Jim Hall signed the bottom of the model. I took another group shot of the Grand Sport posed with three other C2 Stingray Coupes - Don Steves/Dave MacDonald, Big John Mazmanian, Washburn/Edelbrock. The fastback C2 Corvette is one of my all time favorite cars. There are at least a couple more racing replicas I want to build. 5
1959scudetto Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Excellent build, Phil - this model looks aggressive and shows the untamed force of the original - even more so when standing beside its siblings which look harmless in comparison. I also like very much your group shots - excellent work in turning the Daytona version of the 2 D into the Nürburgring winning car of '66.

ismaelg Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 Great job on 005! The famous "half-shaft from the parking lot" story. Love it! Thanks, Ismael
