wrapped exhaust

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a technique to duplicate wrapped exhaust pipes?  I'm talking about the wrapped tape around the pipe.  I considered scraps of old t shirt & white glue but perhaps there is a better way.  Any thoughts?

I’ve cut thin strips of “cloth” medical tape and wrapped with that. Gives it nice texture. Then, I brush paint the tape with flat white, adding a little bit of tan weathering powder.

Yes, that's what I was going to suggest.  Works really well for larger scale models, but even with the weave and overall thickness being a bit out of scale for 1:24/25 models, I think it will look good.

One thing I want to experiment with is lens cleaning wipes.  They are designed to not break down or leave lint.  They are quite strong and can easily be cut into lengths when dry.  Being very thin, they should be to scale for a number of applications.

That is the technique I used.  Closest to actual texture I've seen on the 1:1's.  Color depends on what the effect is to be.

Lens wipes generally are silicone treated and I advise keeping silicone away from your models. It will prevent paint adhesion and will tend to contaminate nearby parts through handling.
