dino246gt Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 AMT's '49 Merc kit is a classic and every modeller should build or probably already has built one. Revell kit is also great, but chopped and somewhat simplified, but I've built that one as well as the cool Woody Wagon from Revell. Here's an old AMT glue bomb that I dis-assembled and re-did. Cheers! 4

What do you use for the door handle hubs? Here's how I made those interior handles and cranks. These are from bent guitar string, tiny round beads from Michael's and small wire insulation. They're not good enough for open cars but in these old coupes, like the '49 Ford (last picture) and '49 Merc, '50 Olds and a few others, they're better than kit door card relief. They go through the holes before any glue, I can position them from outside then super glue them also from outside, then cut off the excess, again from the outside. I brush some Moltow on after. Silvercreeker Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Tangerine Dream is done. This is a 1949 AMT Mercury Sedan. Wanted to build a clean 60’s custom Leadsled. Color is Testors Firey Orange over Gaia Shiny Brass with a Steel Apple fade. The paint job was inspired from the Gene Winfield fade paint jobs of the 60’s. Engine is the Flathead from the kit, with VCG Resins carbs, air cleaners, oil breather and headers. Protech sparkplug boots, MAD distributor. AMT classic whitewalls replaced the odd sized kit tires. Door handles, trim and emblems were shaved and filled. Trunk gaps were filled in and corners on hood were rounded. All chrome was replaced with Revell Chrome, and trim is Bare Metal foil. License Plates and dash are from Best Model Car Parts. And lastly the Tiki shifter is a VCG Resins gem! 6

1959scudetto Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Simple out-of-the-box build (about 40 yrs. ago) - 1983/84 built amt Mercury , bare metal foil added about 20 yrs. ago: My first time Auto-lacquer spray-paint: 6
lucky 130 Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Just found thread, and as always, I'm amazed at all the great Mercs. The stock, mild customs, and most of the wild custom, if its a 49-51 mercs. I've seen "chopped" channeled frenched lowered and just about anything that can be done to a merc, but rarely have I seen a Merc, with the dip taken out of the door. That was one of the most popular things done to the sleds. Why is this

Silvercreeker Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 The "Mer-low" is done. This is a 1949 Revell Mercury Chopped Sedan. This was what was a typical 50’s custom Leadsled. It was lowered 3” in front and back. Color is a Ford Merlot Burgundy, with 2k clear. Engine is the 331 Cadillac from the kit, (which makes this a typical “Mercillac” from the era) with VCG Resins carbs, air cleaner. Protech sparkplug wires, boots and wire dividers and an Iceman distributor and coil. Iceman interior door handles and arm rests. Valve stems are scratch built. Ken’s fuzzy fur carpet and dice and lastly Detail Masters speaker grills on the back dash. All chrome was stripped and replaced with Revell Chrome, and trim is Bare Metal foil. License Plates and dash are from Best Model Car Parts. Enjoy. 4
Silvercreeker Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 My last 2 builds. An AMT 49 Merc and a Revell 49 Merc. Wanted to build them back to back. Both were great to build. 2
