Volzfan59 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 (edited) Thank you @Dave Van for your insight. The more I have thought about it, the more I realize that this is not a "paranoid conspiracy theory" at all. It's actually timely as the powers that be (or were) at the old Ayer's site seem to have taken great pleasure at herding the sheep to meta/farcebook. My question surrounded actions that are really taking place for farcebook users. Nothing paranoid, definitely not a conspiracy theory as it is actually happening. If you do your buying habits and searches are being recorded for marketing purposes. Expand No internet on my tv. Nope, can't track a fictious name or place or anything else like that. No rewards at my store that I know of. Even if they did hack it, they would only know someone enjoys building models as a hobby. And if you buy online, use a pre-paid debit card. Not attached to anything, so if they did hack that, they can't get anything and those don't require you name either, or a real name if you want to put one on it. There's always a way to get around the man if you want to. Just ask the serious one that get off the grid and stay off of it. Oh, and never give out your ssn either. No one needs to know that unless it's attached to taxes. If they insist, just make one up. If they don't catch that it's fake, that means it was never entered in any official way, so it was not tracked either. 1 2
Jonathan Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 A little back to the discussion about the Ayer's site, and it applies to all of the sites that we frequent, it costs money and time to run and manage a site. Domain name registration, hosting, storage, maintenance, etc. all requires some time and money. And it's not once-and-done, really. I've managed a site for a local church for years as a volunteer. It takes a little time each week to do the routine stuff - calendar updates, links for the upcoming services, etc. But, there is also the constant upgrade and maintenance cycle, and the continual need to make sure the site is secure. And, oh if you make a change to the appearance of the site; then you have to educate the (few) users who my complain that "it's not like it was!". It's kind of a hassle, really; but I do it because it helps the church and I find some satisfaction in knowing that I've contributed. Plus, I do like most of the people there. That said, it does take time that I could be using to do something else. I can only imagine the headache of running a site where people are allowed to interact with each other - that requires constant monitoring, and there is a lot of helping people actually use the site ("Why won't my image post?", "I don't like the multifactor authentication", etc. sort of things). So yeah, I hate it, but I can see where a small site dedicated to a portion of a hobby might just throw in the towel and hand it off to facebook. 2

Expand I agree with you, it does take time and I can understand wanting out. With Ayer's, there were people that posted inquiries to take it over so as not to lose the valuable information contained and to keep the forum up and running. Dave Van Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Per the powers that be, the ending of the site was not a money thing. It was even offered that we, members, pay the bill for hosting. Nope. Then the suggestion was brought up that the database be turned over to a new care taker. Someone stepped up and offered to take over the database and maintain for free. Nope. So in the end it looks like they just want us all on Facebook or nothing. I do say Thanks to those who offered to save the site, for free, but were turned dow. Jonathan Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 (edited) I'll start a separate WIP for this one, eventually. I had started a thread on the Ayer's board, but it had been a long time since I updated that. I really need to get back to this build - we've been working on the house lately and just life stuff, but maybe this will motivate me since we're talking vintage racers. I'm a slow builder sometimes. I'm hoping to replicate Fireball Roberts' 1957 Chevy that won the 1958 Darlington race. My dad was there as a boy and he talks about what it was like back then. AMT "Proshop" kit, Tamiya paints.
