landman Posted September 7, 2024 Author Posted September 7, 2024 Same old, Same old, the story of my life. What is the point of doing tests if the results are like this?????????????????????? 2
slusher Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 Pat, I feel for you stripping not fun buddy! 1
mrm Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 (edited) Let me repeat this for the millionth time. You can not put a hot lacquer over enamel. I really don't understand the persistence of people trying to make their own life miserable. This has absolutely nothing to do with brands or cost. The only clear coat you can put over Testor's enamels is either a clear coat specially designed for that or 2K Clear. Anything with lacquer solvents is a recipe for disaster. On top of that I see on the first picture two different Tamiya primers, which are definitely not a cheap option. And if you have access to them, you should have access to Tamiya paint. Which is designed to work with the primers in the picture and will handle most clear coats. Especially considering the color choice, since Tamiya offers quite few oranges and reds including their TS49 Bright red, which was designed to replicate 1997 Ferrari F1 color and is borderline orange. Ace-Garageguy Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 (edited) The "Painter's Touch" clear, while not labeled very accurately as to what it actually IS, has a big warning right there on the can: ADHERE AU PLASTIQUE...which means "adheres to plastic"...which invariably means it has hot solvents that will bite into plastic...and wrinkle the jello out of wimpy enamel. 250 Testa Rossa Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 Get in touch with Dave Hartjes and contact him. He makes THE BEST paint stripper on the market for models. Also, I recommend using Tamiya sprays instead

For tests to be completely valid, you need to spray exactly the same paint materials, the same number of coats, in the same order, allowed to dry the same amount of time, on the plastic THE KIT IS MADE FROM, not on spoons. The substrate CAN have an effect on how paint materials behave. Spoons are fine for looking at colors, but that's about it. 1

That's all I really had in mind when I came up with the idea, Bill. Other people came up with the idea of it being a good test to see if the paint would interact with the plastic after the article was published. I don't remember if it was the writer's idea or just took off from there afterward. 1

landman Posted September 9, 2024 Author Posted September 9, 2024 That Tamiya primer must be good because the Purple Power never touched it. 1

I actually have never seen this red primer for sale in US. Now spray some proper Tamiya or other lacquer paint on it and you will save yourself another headache. 1

beeRS Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 Sorry to see this. Twice must be disheartening. Please don’t give up. It’s a beautiful car and you’ve come a long way already. If all fails an acrylic or enamel finish is a safe bet on plastics.
Zippi Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 It happens Pat. We just need to learn and move on. I'm sure no stranger to stripping paint as I've had my fair share. Two builds ago I had to paint my 55 Ford pickup 3 time before I got it right. I've found that EasyOff oven cleaner works the best for me.
