OldTrucker Posted May 7 Posted May 7 This is the Revell 1/196 scale kit from 1987. I built this same kit from the 1969 release in the late 70's. Spent from 5 one Saturday afternoon until 4am Sunday doing the rigging! My young brothers in laws tried to sail it when it was stored in their garage. Thought I would give it another try. Only change I am making is opening the deck under the life boat and inning a false gun deck under the openings.
mustang1989 Posted May 7 Posted May 7 I'll be looking forward to seeing this one progress Johnny. I built this same kit as a kid.
Warren D Posted May 8 Posted May 8 I remember building this one also, I think I was in the 8th grade.....
mustang1989 Posted May 12 Posted May 12 Good call on adding that piece Johnny as it gave it an added level of depth the deck area.
OldTrucker Posted May 15 Author Posted May 15 Painting the cannon bases on the deck was a real challenge as I played hit the moving target! LoL Won't do the lower deck cannon as they aren't really visible. 3
OldTrucker Posted May 25 Author Posted May 25 A little more progress. Going to take a break from it . Lot of work to do to straighten the masts. So I'll start a new project. 2
JollySipper Posted May 25 Posted May 25 This is looking good! I tried this kit as my first ship model, but failed it...... It did prepare me for my second attempt at a ship, the Captain Kidd ship from Lindberg, which I was able to finish (after about a year working on it)........ Taking a break is good sometimes, gives you a fresh perspective when you go back to it!
A modeler named mike Posted June 20 Posted June 20 The USS Contitution is a really cool ship. The real ship is docked at Baltimore's inner harbor approximately 30 minutes from my location. As a kid we had bought a lifetime membership to be able to board her wherever we visited. You're doing a great job on recreating her likeness. Can't wait to see your finished product. Happy sailing. 1
RubiconLJ Posted June 21 Posted June 21 The USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned Navy ship, is berthed in Boston. The USS Constellation is in Baltimore. 1
mustang1989 Posted June 30 Posted June 30 Your progress is coming along nicely on this one bud. Look forward to seeing you on it when you get back to it. What I did NOT know is that this ship is still around as was mentioned by Mike and Dave. I'd love to take a tour through it one day.
peteski Posted July 8 Posted July 8 Lookign good Johnny! Yes, USS Constitution is still around and often open for tours. I lived in Boston for several years on the '80s and saw it on my daily drive to work over the elevated Expressway (aka. I93 which is buried underground now). I often thought of visiting it and the museum but I never did. I have moved away but not too far for a visit. I should visit one these days. It was recently out in the Boston Harbor for the July 4th celebration for the 17 gun salute, but its masts and rigging are being work on, so it doesn't look as impressive as it would normally look. This is how it currently looks like. 40 years ago or so I've built the larger Revell model (I think it is around 1:87 scale) but had to leave it behind when I moved few years later. I have started a duplicate mode after I moved but I never finished it (got busy with other projects). I still have it in my basement, gathering lots of dust and cobwebs.
