3 Door Chevelle, Yes 3 DOORS!

I saw this car at the 2024 goodguys heartland nationals. I think I googled at it for about 10 minutes, didn't get to talk to the owner because he was probably getting a corn dog. I have no idea how this was possible but there's definitely a lot of craftsmanship put into it. If you notice the 4 door side has an extra pice of trim on it as well. What do you guys think of this car, funny, practical, ridiculous?

Boy, that would really confuse one of my neighbors, who thinks she has a two-door because "it has two doors on each side"...........

She drives a hatch (5-door).........

That's a pretty cool car, and idea. They probably started with a four door sedan, and used the door, quarter panel and associated structure from a two door sedan on the driver's side. Not an easy project.  I read an article in eruotuner magazine years ago where someone built a two door vw jetta using golf/gti parts. They actually went as far as having proper safety glass created for the new rear windows. This kind of thing is why I go to car shows. 👍👍

I saw that car in that exact spot last year as well. Very well done conversion. 

IIRC the interior was done stock. Some stock wheels and it could pass for a faux prototype.

Around 1994, when VW launched the Mk3 Golf for North America, they had a 3 door version. Apparently, it started as a mistake at the brand new factory in Mexico, where a 3 door panel was somehow installed on a 4 door car. As the roof line and wheelbase is identical, it fits with no problem. It was discovered almost immediately, but VW decided to finish the car and showcase it to demonstrate the importance of quality checks or something. I had pics of the car when it came to our dealership. Darned if I can find them though.

ford did some 4 door mk3 fiesta (in europe the hatch is counted as door if it opens into the passenger area so the ford escort would be a 3 or 5 door, while the near identicle orion is only 4 door as it has a trunk) as a concept in the early 90s. the yellow one is still in ford uks collection

There are pictures floating around of a few cars done up in clay at the studio's for the big three done this way. It makes sense to do just half of the car one way and the other the half the other.

That was the Nardo Grey Mk4 known as Project X. I followed that build. Was pretty crazy at the time. Although, it was kind of a hack job. Great concept, some pretty crap details. 

There's a few of these around now. What's crazy is that car was built as a two door, when it was basically new. Only a year or two old. Not many people willing to chop apart a basically new car!

That's the one! I also recall another reflex silver one done similar. No, not many average people have the money or resources to cut up a new vehicle, especially at today's prices.

I've seen plaster styling mdels in museums such as the Henry Ford with the 2-door/4-door arrangement.  Since you can't see both sides at once it .makes sense.

it got a few makeovers. the final version was rs2 blue on a set of chrome carlines with a full r32 swap including the 4x4. I prefered the hok brown on carlines though

Yeah, that car has lived a hard life and has gone through many iterations.

ok that is cool i might have to make some models like this with a few different cars that had both a 2 door and 4 door version one side the door the other side a 4 door

I've seen photographs of many Full Size, Clay Body Models in various magazines and books over the years. Detroit Styling Studios used the 2 Door/4 Door trick quite a few times on the full size mockups to show what both version would look like. Often times they would show different trim levels on each side as well.

Just a way to maximize the effort on the Models.
