FOMO is real. When kits first went off-shore there was a fear that some political upheaval would leave the molds lost forever. So some of us bought doubles, triples, etc of things.

Aftermarket companies have vanished suddenly. Good resin casters have died or gotten ill from the chemicals used in the process. 

Many vendors are truly cottage industries, part time operations after the day job ends. Some run afoul of the IRS or run up against copywrite issues that they can't win. Reputations are fragile, a few bad reviews can sink a company or make it hard to come back from.

I tend to buy things NOW. Even if I have no immediate plans for the items. I'm at the point where I'm selling off the excesses that I've accumulated over the past 2 decades.

As far as kits, I many more than I'll ever build. I used to make a hobby of haunting Kay Bee Toys, Toy R Us, and even Walmart when they had kits for clearance kits. As a result I have an attic full. The problem now is how to unload them. 

My regret is putting off buying kits from ModelHaus, Fred Cady and others. It was just never the right time and now it's gone.

Just kidding.., I totally get it. I finally scored a resin kit that I have had my eyes on since it was released in 2003/2004(?). But, I just didn't have the financial means to justify the cost.. until now. And it's been out of production for... well...*years*.

And literally*nobody* wants to let go of it if they have them. I've had this kit on my "notification" list for quite a while, and I jumped at the opportunity.

years ago i worked in the Physical Plant of a state university. one of the plumbers was retiring.

he had taken home so much stuff in the previous 25 years, he had to bring stuff back.

Attics usually get very hot (especially in the Summer's full sun).  I hope that the plastic parts in all those kits didn't get distorted by all that kit.  If they are warped, you will have no problem disposing them (into a recycling bin).

There is actually an ounce of truth deep down in history that justifies a reasonable stash, I remember the 1990's when I could only buy AMT 49 Ford, Mercurys and GMC step side at the local hobby shop, the rest were obscure Revell and Monogram. Today with Round2, Moebius and new kits from Revell the situation is different but the trauma is there deep down.

The fear is real in regard to model kits

There have been several one and done runs , recent ones I can think of.

Are just 3 I can think of real quick. All 3 can bring decent money in the secondary market.

Yeah...    I have been away from the hobby for close to 10yrs, but returned seriously about a year ago, and this is the first I've seen/heard of the S & M Cuda! I'd definitely pick one of those up if I seen it on a shelf somewhere... 

 

Edit: They're currently pulling $125 on Fleabay. 

Speaking of FOMO and Fleabay...  I have no problem spending that and more on decently detailed or curbside OOPTamiya/ Hasegawa/ Fujimi, or a cast resin Studio27/Profil24/ Alpha Model kit, but to drop that kind of cash on a OOP Revell/ Monogram/ AMT kit, is really hard for me to justify....

Does that make me wI3rd? 😂🤣

When I "kind of" had money I bought all the ebay kits I "kind of" could afford. Now that I have "more" money I buy the subjects I really want. Then again, I am at around 250 kits and have yet to retire. I shall look forward to the time I can get started on them.

I’m pretty discriminating in what I’ve been collecting and my modest stash currently has maybe 125 or so kits. Before I retired last year, I updated it with 15 or so new kits released during the years family obligations required me to set the hobby aside. Barring a miraculous release of a bunch of desirable newly tooled kits, I can count the number of upcoming kits I plan to buy on one hand. The only other kits I’d like to have are the ones needed to fill all the holes in my annuals collection and as you can imagine are highly collectible and very expensive so I’m not concerned about having too many of those. Will I be able to finish everything I have? Only if the Lord allows me an abundance of days enjoying the same good health I’m currently in. My dad is 93 and still enjoys building pretty complex Lego kit’s so I’ll take that as a favorable sign.

I have bought a ton of kits from my childhood that brought me joy then and will now be able to build them with so much more skill and patience.  I also have a few that are limited run stuff or hard to find that I will be building. I am sitting at 450ish kits of various mediums, and plan on getting to about 1k. I am looking at having a nice stash for retirement even as I build now. 

I have found that my blood line is good to early 90's and being fair with eye hand coordination, so that gives me hope. If for some odd reason my eye hand is horrid, I will sell them and invest the monies in other things I can enjoy.

That's awesome Brian. My spouse and I did some work together on a Porsche 356, but the passion wasn't really there. I bought a Lego poinsettia before Christmas and we had a great time building it together. I received a Lego bouquet of flowers for my birthday in May, and we plan on taking it to the coast tomorrow and working on it together.

That’s awesome as well Steve. My dad has finished the Lego Taj Mahal kit and the Lego solar system kit and is currently working on the Lego riverboat kit which has 4000 pieces. Happy building!

I can't justify spending $125 on that new of a kit.

Bot when the stock issue can be so easy to replicate it with some parts I probably have in the paets bins .

 

Another one is the Butch Leal 1965 SS Belvedere. 

I see bin listing's all the time at $100 and  more.

 

I've bought 3 in past 3 months and haven't paid over $60 for any of them
