Okay, my question is. You guys have been modelling for years, and as you know I have just re-entered the car modelling scene after many years of absence. So, what /how do you store your models. Some of you must have hundreds of builds. I'm about to glue the last bits to my current build the '40 Ford, and checking my collection/stash, at the moment I have seven kits and three more coming. I'm looking at a glass display cabinet which should hold about twelve, and at my age  aaand the time it takes me to build a kit, that might just see me out. LOL With you guys that have so many, do you put them back in their boxes for storage and protection? Then rotate which ones you want out on display. How do you all do it?

Sorry Peter, got a bit confused as to where to post it, thought it was a discussion topic As always, please be respectful. I don't consider that error to be disrespectful, just an error in posting. The heading is  Magazine News and Discussions.

For a long time, I just used 1/24 plastic display cases that you can get in bulk from Pioneer Plastics or individually from Hobby Lobby on shelves in my office & work area. As seen here:

Recently, I converted a metal garage shelf to a display cabinet. Here is a WIP photo: image.jpeg.bd1719dc90c4d5acdddad6a7032deb7f.jpeg

Still working on how I want things arranged. Bottom shelf will be for some storage & all shelves can be wired for lights.

Sadly, all I can find of those cases is 2 maybe 3 at a time at my local hobby lobby... Michaels don't have any at all or if they do I cant find any.

Really nice display Jim, should be really great when you get it finished, particularly with lights. Tell me, are all those boxes at the bottom still kits to be built? Yer gonna need a lot of shelves mate. 😁

I must look into that Sean, see if they are available here.

Not going to be much building going on for a bit mate, bit of building cars, bit of shelves, but don't get "burn out". 😄 Those cases are worth a fortune here, the cheapest is AU$38.80.

@bandit1 Get them directly from Pioneer Plastics. Might be less expensive in the long run.

I just checked, a pack of 12 for $140 a set... Math tells me I'll be paying $11.70 a piece, Im getting them at hobby lobby for $6.99 a piece and I usually visit there on Thursdays looking for 1/64 diecast (autoworld cat eye chevs)

They are, but the price is a killer the cheapest is AU$38.80 and go to AU$90. Looks like I'll doing a LOT of dusting. Actually I've found a place with a four shelf glass cabinet, should hold about 12 cars

One of my boys is pretty handy with the tools, might have to hit him up to build Dad a display case, problem is motivation, he's a lazy bugger! :)

That section of the forum (as it'is explained in its name and description which I quoted) is strictly for discussions just about the Model Cars Magazine. Your post asking about display/storage of models is not really related to the discussions about the magazine. Since you are still fairly new here I simply tried to show that the subject you posted about did not fit that specific forum section and proposed which section is  more appropriate. No harm done Donny.

Thank you Peter, I'm still at a bit of a loss as to where those   "general" questions go. This is the same sort of forum that ORBX (flight sim) use, yes I have been a member there for over 10 years, and it's more straight forward, easier to use, less confusing. Thank you for understanding.

To me the main page ( https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/  ) offers a pretty good guidance as to which forum section (this forum actually calls those sections "forums" while the entire forum is called "site").

Looking at those description of the verious sections your question seems to be the best fit for the General section (and moderators moved it there).  Your question was not specific to some model, building techinque, or modeling supplies - it was about displaying/storing models. General section seems  perfect fit for it since the guidance shows "For general model car hobby or 1:1 automotive related topics ONLY. Both trucks and cars are appropriate topics."  Your question is not model specific, but it is related to model car hobby in general  (you use display cases to house your models). If you look through the topics in the General section you will find several older threads about display cases and model storage. An alternative would be the Q&A section (Specific modeling question? Wondering how to? Need help? Looking for answers? Ask here), but the General selection seems a better fit.

The Off-Topic section would not be a good fit since your question is related to the model car hobby. If you had a question about plumbing, or wanted to talk about some movie, that would be good fit for the Off-Topic section. This all seems pretty clear to me.

My speculation is that the flight sim forum does not need as many sections as we have here since it is about a specific software product and the related accessories.

Thats fine Peter, as long as you have it sorted out. As far as going back through posts, if I did all that, I wouldn't have time to build. Thank you for the explanation, now I won't have to do that.

Well, participating in this forum for 11 years and my brain retaining some previous contents I read gives me bit of an advantage over a new member. :)  But I still say that the descriptions of each section of the forum (if one actually reads them) should give any new or old member a pretty good idea what would be the optimal section to post their new thread, but don't worry Donny, even many seasoned  members start new threads in a wrong sections.

And to contribute something topical, I did a quick search of the forum using Google, and here are some ideas:

There were others too - I just picked these few to show.  The thing is that with a forum which has been around for a  long time there is a 100% chance that most basic questions have already been answered (several times), and the answers can easily be found by doing a search.  It is not that difficult.

IKEA has display cases too. The shelves are generally too far apart for model cars, but you can easily add plexiglass (Perspex) shelves on spacers for additional shelves.

That’s where I got this one. I got two extra shelves cut at a local glass shop and made my own brackets. There is still space for more shelves if needed.

This one I picked up at a second hand store.

Like Dave said , IKEA has pretty good cases, I have seven of them 🤪, they’re about $85 , but only have three shelves. I have my local hardware store cut three extra shelves at about $7 each. I make my own brackets from thumb screws. So for a little over $100 I get a pretty decent case that will hold about 18 models. Works for me.
