Scale-Master Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Tamiya 1/24th scale kit. One of the many factory colors offered was Fire Red Pearl; it looks a lot like Tamiya Mica Red so I'll use the LP paint for the exterior. The kit is molded in a dark charcoal metallic so I used Tamiya AS-12 Bare Metal Silver as a barrier after doing the normal clean-up. I decanted it and reduced it with Tamiya lacquer thinner. It took two lights coats to cover fully, but when it dried I was really happy with the smooth and thin finish. The LP-42 was also thinned with Tamiya lacquer thinner and airbrushed in two coats. While the finish looked smooth and uniform, after it fully dried it wasn't as glossy as the Pearl Blue I used on the NSX. It may have been polished out, but with the more predominate flake this color has, I thought I'd use the Tamiya LP-9 Clear Gloss to bring up the shine. Again it was reduced with the Tamiya lacquer thinner for better flow and smoother gloss. This clear works very well and is quite forgiving. It also dries as quickly as the colors in the LP line. This is how it looked about 12 hours after clear coating. (If you are looking for a good clear gloss and have not tried this yet, it is well worth looking into.) 12
Rich Chernosky Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Mark...this is one awesome kit and you are off to a great start. Your paint technique is spot on and you got very good results. You will really enjoy this build. Look forward to the finished product. 1
espo Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Like the color. I'm doing an old AMT '36 Ford on the work bench now that I painted that color. 1
SpikeSchumacher Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Beautiful color on a beautiful car. Will be following. 1
beeRS Posted September 10 Posted September 10 Paintwork is gorgeous. Great start. I’m looking forward to seeing more. 1
Mattilacken Posted September 10 Posted September 10 Great kit, great car and those paints work great when you learn the ratio 1
catpack68 Posted September 11 Posted September 11 (edited) Looks great Mark! I love that color on it. Every time I see one of these being built,it makes me want to start on the one I have. Edited September 11 by catpack68 1
dino246gt Posted September 11 Posted September 11 It's a great kit! Most of this pan is one piece, a bit of detail paint goes a long way to make it look more complicated than it actually is. LOVE the colour you've done, I did mine in black. 4
Scale-Master Posted September 23 Author Posted September 23 The engine is on the simplistic side, but once all the underhood details are added (or should I say painted) it should play the part just fine. 7
Scale-Master Posted September 29 Author Posted September 29 After the chassis is painted up it looks pretty convincing for a simple pan with suspension and exhaust components. 6
jaymcminn Posted September 29 Posted September 29 Looks great, Mark. The Mica Red is a great color for this car. Sometimes I wish I'd gone for something brighter like this when I built mine as the metallic black I went with blends a little too well with the carbon fiber accents. 1
Scale-Master Posted Wednesday at 01:18 AM Author Posted Wednesday at 01:18 AM I spent a little extra time drilling out and detail painting the rotors to look more like carbon fiber. 2
slusher Posted Wednesday at 02:01 AM Posted Wednesday at 02:01 AM Great looking work abd beautiful paint! 1
Justin Porter Posted yesterday at 03:26 AM Posted yesterday at 03:26 AM It's always good to see this kit getting built. The scarcity makes folks understandably nervy about building them. Love the colors and detailing you're doing so far. 1
Matt Bacon Posted yesterday at 08:22 AM Posted yesterday at 08:22 AM I can’t see the pictures from the UK so I’m guessing Imgur-hosted. One thing I learned doing mine: find a decal sheet with some area of clear carrier film, and apply the metal stickers to that, then apply them like any normal decal. They are a pain to get off the sheet and into the right place on the car, and much easier to apply to a flat sheet on your workbench. I suspect the older these kits get, the more temperamental the glue on those metal stickers will become, too. best, M. 1
Bugatti Fan Posted yesterday at 08:38 AM Posted yesterday at 08:38 AM (edited) Would it be possible to try reloading your pictures directly from your PC to this site Mark? At least you have the option to do so on this site unlike a British site I also use on which it is necessary to use hosts. I am a UK user and Imgur has been made unusable this side of the pond whatever site Imgur has been used on. From what I have gathered from just reading your text, it appears that a good model is taking shape here. Edited yesterday at 08:40 AM by Bugatti Fan 1
