you know Harry, that's the kind of BS response that is all too common around here these days. so know what? just keep it the way it is or the way it makes sense to YOU, the hell with your readers.

and I bet NO ONE asked for a separate section for pickups, combined with everything else you could imagine that could possibly be a truck or commercial vehicle.

but like I said, go ahead on big man, do it your way.

What would be so wrong with the following? Why even have separate categories? If you get to a post your not interested in, move along. Adding more categories is gonna tick someone off because their 6 wheeled swamp buggy doesn't have a category. Best to have just one. We can call it Scale Vehicles. The KISS principle solves most issues like this.

I can see a few things wrong with that.

There are a lot of builders here who are strictly truckers, and other who just like cars.

Mixing the sections would mean a whole lot of traffic there.

People love to complain around here, and you can be sure as shootin' that they'd complain about that.

Like I said before, keep everything the way it is, just break up the trucker's wanted and trade sections!

When we didn't have a separate section for pickups, people complained that we didn't have one. So we added one.

Now that we do have a separate pickup section, other people complain that we have one.

Anyone want to tell me the secret of keeping everyone happy all the time?

I think it is very simple Harry, move the two existing "Pickup" sections to the auto section of the forum where they belong, not in the "Truck" section that should be for the hard working vehicles that keep the country alive, and move the posts not dealing with Class 8 trucks or emergency/work vehicles out of the "Truck Stop" subsection.

The trucks section really should be commercial vehicles and work trucks / cars of all sizes. Personally I do think pickups, vans, panel wagons used for work, not show belong. A Ford Pinto with a dominoes sign would even fit in as would a farmers old pickup. Factory stock pickups and such also fit in here.

Custom and show rigs whether full size big rig slammed and chromed, S-10 "tuner" style or a low rider '59 El Camino share a lot more with custom cars than trucks. These are more about style, and looking good, not working and getting dirty.

Monster lifted 4x4s, and "utes" (El Camino / Ranchero / Brat things) are just going to have to be a value judgement on where the builder feels most comfortable as they can easily go either way with slight differences in building style.

I agree 99.5% Aaron, except with the line I highlighted. I see many custom rigs working and getting dirty, but while looking good doing it. Yes, get the little tuners and lowriders in a car section, but the fancy rigs still have a place in the "Truck" section no matter what.

"View New Content" - upper right corner. No filter. No categories. You can swim through several hundred new posts everyday if you have the time. For the people that don't categories help them find just what they want to see.

The only change I might suggest to Casey's outline is keep all the WIP or "On the Workbench" categories separate and I have one big combined section for all completed builds. This might help satisfy the no category faction.

And for the poster - when you add your completed build to "Under Glass" include a link to your "On the Workbench" thread if you did one. Then we can go back, if we choose and see how you accomplished your latest masterpiece.

Who cares if people complain? From Gregg's standpoint, he just needs to provide a forum. He shouldn't be trying to make it perfect for everyone. It's a losing battle. No one is going to abandon ship just because they have skip over threads in the Under Glass section.

I agree wholeheartedly with Casey's compiled recommendations. Pickups are trucks too, no need to get so snobby about it.

i honestly think it works well enough as-is. The only gripe I've ever had is the thing about rodded or custom trucks that would be feature articles in 1:1 custom or rod CAR magazines being relegated to the truck section, where the less ambitious mouse scrollers may not get to them. Not really a life-changing deal, either way.

Putting the questions/ answers / tips sections higher up, as in Casey's layout, might save the mods having to reposition quite so many posts, as it wouldn't take so much horrific wrist-finger-eye-strain scrolling down through the list of topics to find the appropriate Q&A headings. But maybe not.

What I don't understand is this: we now have a section for pickups, like it or not. And you all know we have a section for pickups. So if you want to post or look at models of pickups, can anyone explain to me what is so almighty hard about just going to the pickup section?

Is scrolling down a web page really that physically exhausting?

Listen, wise guy. Maybe you ought to knock off all the smartass comments regarding the way this site is organized. For your information, the whole trucks/pickiups thing was added BECAUSE OF MEMBER REQUESTS. Got that? It wasn't me "doing it my way," it was us responding to our members' request. Your problem seems to be that it wasn't done with YOUR approval, so now you never miss a chance to take a shot at me and/or the moderators. If this forum is so hard for you to navigate, I suggest you save yourself all of the aggravation and find a forum you like better, because we are NOT going to rework things here based on the desires of ONE particular member. Understand? There... a no BS response just for you.

Many of us saw the whole conversation evolve and that's the way it came down. Show us some proof that the Truck category reflects the special interests of our moderators and management. You might find a couple of fire engines, but that's it.

If I had any major suggestion to make other than dumping Big Boyz, it would be to have fields at the top of the first post of each New Topic building thread to fill in with the following:

SUBJECT: [car or truck name]

KIT MANUFACTURER: [Revell, AMT, ICM, etc]

SCALE: [Obvious]

They have a similar set-up at scalemotorcars.com

One point to be made from all of this. Any changes made need to keep as much of the present structure as possible. Renaming drag tostraight line and nascar to oval is one thing. Trying to combine everything into one place now with all the tasks would be a huge undertaking.

I've had experience working with databases and know the amount of work for big changes.

Why not just make the distinction between Commercial Vehicles and Non-Commercial Vehicles?

In Ohio Pick ups are titled and licensed as passenger vehicles anyway, unless they have signage and are used for business.

Whether it's a stock, custom/show or off road truck it should be grouped with cars.

If we're going to argue let's pick a proper subject. What about Jeeps? Where do they belong?

Posted

Harry's original post in 2010 seems to be my favorite suggestion so far. Each section get's it's own showcase/glass,

Muscle, Road, Rods, Trucks/SUV's.

Caminos and Ranchero's are cars, Ute's are cars as well. Jeeps? Trucks/SUV's. Model A pickups? If Harry built it, it probably belongs in the trucks section. Most everyone else builds them as rods.

Change it, don't change it. I don't have any problem finding what I want to look at. For me, I am just glad the forum is here. Made some good friends here and have learned a lot from you guys. Just one guys opinion.

I don't understand the big deal with changing it! If you don't like it, create your own forum, and watch everyone complain about it. Seriously, we're here to build models...Joe
