highway Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I'm assuming you mean from kits after they are built? If that's the case, of course. They make handy parts boxes and also come in handy for poor orphan kits that have no box. I've had a few of those old AMT 3 kit combos that I downsided into a single kit box to save some room and eliminate those huge boxes they came in in the first place. I also reuse the boxes for storing old built ups in. I simply take a small label, a 1 1/2 inch by 2 3/4 inch that you find in the office supply section of Walmart, and write what is now going to live in the recycled box. That why I don't have to spend two hours trying to find something!
Peter Lombardo Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 To my wifes chagrin, yes, I tend to keep them for no known reason. I think I am just too lazy to clean up after a project.
Jordan White Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Usually I just cut off the front of the box to keep, but if I like the side panels too I'll keep them as well.
Jantrix Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I haven't til now, but plan on keeping the box top from now on.
Raul_Perez Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Only if it's a vintage box or if there are still enough parts left over to use as a parts box. I'm running out of room!!
Guest Johnny Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I used too! But sold them all on ebay two years ago! The Johan boxes sold quick!
JamesW Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I used to, but now it depends on the kit. I used to keep them for parts boxes, then I picked up some of those rubbermaid shoe boxes for parts, and I recently upgraded to a Kobalt tool box for supplies and aftermarket and a Stanley tool box for extra parts.
Hattley Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 To my wifes chagrin, yes, I tend to keep them for no known reason. I think I am just too lazy to clean up after a project. Ha! I hear ya.
Greg Cullinan Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I was doing the same thing when I started last year, then I had like 20 of them and they had to go. (ocd) But now I have a few "vintage" kits and don't know what to do about saving them. I don't really want them but it would be a shame for a kit to last 40 years til I got hold of it. Usually I just cut off the front of the box to keep, but if I like the side panels too I'll keep them as well.
gray07 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I keep them all i have over 300 of them, i still have the first ones i built when i was 10 yrs old, i dont keep the bottoms unless they have the pictures on them, iam thinking about starting to list them on ebay
MyBradKeselowski Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I keep the box tops of my Aoshima kits...
my66s55 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I keep them along with the instructions as well as any unused parts.
Hattley Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 I keep the box tops of my Aoshima kits... I was just thinking that they fold down, so why couldnt they be save them like that? I'm sure a lot could be kept in a plactic storage tub.
Rob Hall Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) I keep all my boxes....have to have a place to store the built models. Got to keep all the boxes and instructions. But I do throw out the empty sprues. Edited September 16, 2010 by Rob Hall
crazyjim Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I rip off 1 end panel and rest of the box goes in the trash along with the directions. Naturally, I save any extra parts.
whale392 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I save all of my boxes.............................. ....................................................because the models are still waiting to be built up inside! I have almost 1100 kits now, and two finished models.
crazyjim Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Two finished and 1100 kits waiting? Holy moly!! Maybe you need to stop buying/trading Whale392 and start building. I feel bad that I have about 40 kits (with 2 Hemi Darts on order). 1100 kits?? WOW!!!
whale392 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I am wanting to thin down my collection. Next time I am in Florida I will be sorting out the 'keep' from the 'wont keep' kits and getting rid of a LOT of plastic........some going back into the early 60s.
Dave Ambrose Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Generally speaking, no. I just don't have the space, and I much prefer the actual model over box art.
car lover 1996 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I keep all the boxes, instructions, empty trees, extra parts and extra decals. I have a spot for empty boxes and unbuilt kits.
disabled modeler Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I save all the old boxes- top and bottoms. They make great storage and I like to look at them, Makes great wall paper.
Scale-Master Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 For some reason I end up keeping quite a few, but only because they are "needed" to hold things. I do try to keep and file all instructions. Of course I keep the decals and any useable left over parts.
