When I returned to the hobby 9 years ago. My daughter was just getting into liking cars. I decided right then, that I needed to be building odd cars. The stock from the factory that not many could ever get to see in their lifetime. I began with a '60 Dodge Polara in the resin line. I wanted her to see the odd ones.

I've told her and my wife, to MAKE SURE that whatever they decide to keep was OK. Just DON'T destroy the rest, donate them to a museum. I see the model museum in the December issue but, I decided this long before I knew a model museum was around. I'd like to see more of it.

Has everyone here thought about where their models will be when your gone? Just curious.

I am sure they will sell my 300+ kit collection on eBay and retire rich and happy! ;)

I should leave my wife a few names and phone numbers so she doesn't get tricked into giving them away or getting next to nothing for them.

I have thought about selling them down as I doubt that I will build them all in this lifetime, but then that would be admitting what she has been saying for years..."You have too many models!"

When I'm pushing up daisies, I suspect I won't care much what happens to my models. However, I have no firm thoughts on the matter while I'm still among the living. I think my sons would probably keep a favorite of two but I'd like to see the rest sold (built and unbuilt) so that someone else could enjoy them whether they rip them apart and rebuild or keep as is. Models are for building and enjoying. Model museum? Nah, I'm not that good and frankly don't care to be. I'd rather build five models to my satisfaction than build one in the same mount of time that might be museum quality.

I have about 1,000 kits of all kind most are Big Rigs, Cars and Pick up trucks.

Two Grand kids Boy and a Girl that wants to build.

My wife says she will keep all of them if they dont want to build them.

My Grand Daughter and I have talked about this and she knows theres enough for even

her children to build if they want to.

Regardless of whether you think your built models are "good enough" for the museum (International Model Car Builders Museum, Salt Lake City, UT) or not, please consider donating to them, for several reasons.

(1) Your builds may likely be better than you think.

(2) They like to display mainstream or "average" builders' models in addition to the hallmark builds. It demonstrates the state of the hobby at a given time, even better than the rare 'stand-out' model.

(3) Even those built models that can't be displayed are useful to the museum ... sales of those at the GSL auction not only generate revenue for the museum (which offsets its expenses and can keep it operating), but they also put built models back into the hands of enthusiasts ~ where they belong. Better to change hands than to be thrown into a landfill ~ and the cash generated at the museum's auction can help keep the museum available to future generations. Besides, that's what keeps collectors like Tom Geiger going ...

(4) Your tool and supplies collection may have a vital piece of memorabilia that the museum has not previously been able to collect ... something from your workbench could complete a tasty piece of history that would otherwise have been lost.

(5) And, your unbuilt kits can be auctioned to generate more funds for the museum, or, they may send those unbuilt kits to soldiers, sailers, airmen and marines in combat zones overseas for stress-relief, or, at the very least, your unbuilt kits could end up being some other modelers' holy grails!

Any way you shake it, in my humble opinion, donation of your goodies to the museum will benefit the hobby. If you don't have a family member that will really do your accumulated goodies right, ... please give careful consideration to these thoughts. The worst thing that could happen is for someone who just doesn't care ... or get it ... to dump everything in the refuse.

I've told both my wife and Joy to just call my brothers from the DMCC, and let them buy what they want, and sell the rest for them. The guys are honest and I trust them. They did the same thing for Bud Le febre's wife when he went home, and gave her all the proceeds. I even had a chance to buy one of Bud's kits, Hasegawas new Ferrari Testarossa, for only 10 bucks.!!! I'm willing THAT one to Pat Redmond (if I don't build it first! Sorry Pat!);) ;)

Roger it's funny you bring this up.My wife and I just filled out our wills and I'm willing everything(paints, tools, models, cases) in the basement(which is my hobby room)to my brother. My only stipulation to him was if he don't do anything with them, put them on e-bay and consider it one final gift from big brother. He does have a fancy for my models, but he lacks patience and desire to actually sit down and build one from start to finish,he leaves that to me

By the way,you okay Roger ? your not sick or anything like that are ya,just making sure my fellow club member is okay.:)

Thanks for your concern George. I believe the doctor that says I'm healthy as a horse, but I'm a planner. I'm always trying to look ahead. I really have a problem with death itself. I must have some phobia of it. I can't dwell on it much. I've always heard that talking out ones problems is good theropy.

What will I really care! I'll be dead!:)

Heck I tell my wife keep it cheap! Cremate me and burial at sea! You know, one dump one flush and I'm on my way!

At 34 years old, I hope I don't have to worry about this for a long time. Also, at 34 years old, I hopefully have enough time to finish all the ones I have so there wont be any unfinished ones to get rid of. However, I'm sure there will be finished and unfinished kits when I go but I'm sure both of my boys will enjoy 'em just as much as I have. They're both model building nuts just like me!

Plain and simple, I'm taking them with me. I'm going to have to have something to do with all that free time!:lol:

Some of my better built models have already been requested by the Model Museum in Salt Lake city and they will go there. My Daughter will sell a few that will bring a few big bucks and I think the rest is going to a young modeler that doesn't have alot of money to spend on models, but loves them. I might have our local LHS help her decide who.

Those dealers are everywhere. I work part time for a estate auction and sales company and I see those dealers every weekend. If only I was allowed to buy on the first day of a sale. I would be swimming in kits.

In all honesty considering I am only 27 I will probably drop the hobby and come back to it several times, hopefully, before I pass on. My kits will probably end up getting sold or my kids or some family will take them.

Fast forward to distant future:

MCM forum member:

Wanna hear about a great score? My wife & I were vacationing in a remote area of _______ and we happened across a yard sale.....

After everyone congratulates MCM member for scoring dozens of `58 annuals for $5 each we all wish it was us. boogiebanana.gif

Scenario #2:

Your walking your dog and you see CASES of model kits being tossed into a church good-will van.... nutkick.gif

Scenario #3:

You tell family members whom to contact for help in selling off collection in the event you hit the exit ramp.... 2thumbs.gif

When I bite the big old bazooka, my funeral will consist of my lifeless carcass being set ablaze and fired out of a cannon into a brick wall. This will then be posted on You Tube with a request for donations to cover the cost of the cannon and the wall. I'd originally planned to have all my models fired out of the same cannon at the same time, but I suppose I could have my family auction them off, again, to finance the cannon and the wall.

Geez ! I am a big collecter of memorabilia of all sorts. Baseball cards and boxes that I made and sold at shows, antiques that I have restored, old vinal records, jewelry and music boxes which I built and sold and of course model cars...you name it I have it. I have always given this question a lot of thought. I have to stop myself at times and think of other things to get it off my mind. All the suggestions mentioned here are logical, even the dead and gone thing,I want be around. I really have no answer. Sell before it happens, but you dont know when it will happen. Donate to places that will have the biggest impact. Other than that, enjoy each day and build as if its your last. You never know what tomorrow will bring. On a lighter note. I have run across a Testors Porsche Carrera Targa....The kit is dated 1986. Found it in an attic of one of my clients. All parts are there. Just wondering if anyone knows how this kit fairs. And what year is the model itself. I have a silver 1/1 1974 Targa in my garage in pretty good condition(another one of my collected items) and it looks like the kit. So does anyone know about this kit? And dont worry bout stuff!

It is something I've thought about now and then and still have no real idea.

I'll be cremated and ashes will be, Well, What ever they want to do with them.

My Models? Melted down into a life size figure of Me!!

Maybe A huge garage sale posted everywhere she could think of and sell them off for what ever

she can get?

$15 for domestic kits and $20 for Foreign kits.

Ye'all keep your eyes pealed. ;)

What do I care, I'll be Gone, gone, gone. :D:lol:

I'd let my friends take whatever is of interest to them (cars, trains, and non-modeling items, like my baseball cards and stamps,) and request that the rest be sold by MassCar, and that the proceeds be split evenly by the club and the Scottish Rite Learning Center (great charity, by the way- (see Scottish Rite Learning Center for more information.)

since styrene is flammable,

I'm requesting a "Viking" funeral..... :)

Sent off to Valhalla in a column of thick black styrene smoke, eh??? I can think of worse ways to go... :)

I have no children and am divorced but I do have 5 older siblings, 12 nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews... (My entire family knows me as "Uncle Chris") Since my family is rather large and they all have at least a passing appreciation of my hobby and talents, I see my family dividing the collection up and everyone taking several models each that will remind them of Uncle Chris. I just hope that this happens in about 50 years... I still have some living to do!

This something that I really hadn't put much thought in to. My son has no interest in my models, same with my daughter. The wife thinks that there toys and would probably toss the whole lot in the nearest dumpster. I could give them to the scouts or to the guys in the car club to divide with in the club, or I'll just sell them all and enjoy myself with the cash from the sale before I go.
