Harry P. Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I was "out of the loop" for the past week-out of town on business. Ok, so I didn't have to go far this time... only to downtown Chicago! So technically you could say that I was actually "in the Loop!" Woo Hoo! No plane travel necessary for once. I HATE flying... the hassle of airport security, tiny airplane seats, etc.). I had internet access, of course, but no time for it! But I got home a few hours ago and it's nice to be back!
SuperStockAndy Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Welcome back! I hate plane traveling too. I'm afraid I'd get motion sickness if I step foot in one. Plus you gotta deal with all the thugs on them.
Guest Johnny Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Grandpa used to say "if it breaks down you can't pull off to the side and get out and walk!"
Nova-ss Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Boy do I understand them reasons.I'm not a person that want to fly....I hate falling and hitting the ground.I've had road rash before...funny I live from that. Thanks,Chris
Jeff Johnston Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 (edited) I'm with you Harry. I'm not afraid to fly, but I don't like the process of getting on the plane... stand in line, take off your shoes, load everything on the belt...the person behind standing in your "bubble" making you feel rushed...gathering all your stuff off the end...trying to get your shoes on while you stuff your computer back in its case, while the person's stuff behind you runs into all your stuff. Then trying to find a bin for your stuff on the plane that's near your seat while the person next to you decides that both of the armrests are for him, and the 5 year old behind you thinks its fun to kick the back of your seat..... Oh yeah baby..good times Though if I could get a couple nights in Chicago I'd do it. I used to go every November for a work conference and had a great time. I met Buddy Guy there several times and even got on stage once at the House of Blues and played with the band. i have a couple favorite restaurants/pubs there too. 2002p51 Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Let's see, arriving at the airport two hours before flight and waiting, and waiting, and waiting in multiple lines, intrusive airport security measures, seats that are uncomfortable for a 6 footer before you even leave the gate, no service in flight, (if you're lucky you get a bag of peanuts and half a Coke!), old worm out planes that drop parts in flight, air traffic controllers that put two planes on the same runway, pilots who have been drinking or fly right past your destination airport because they're not paying attention. You pay hundreds of dollars for the privilege, and after all that, they lose your luggage! Now, consider that I absolutely love to drive and enjoy nothing better than a long road trip, and I see no reason to ever get into one of those flying aluminum tubes and put my life in someone else's very untrustworthy hands.

When my sister has to travel for the AKC to judge a show, she no longer flies- its either the train or the bus.
SoCalCarCulture Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Glad to hear so many of you either have a fear of, or dislike, flying - makes it easier for the rest of us!
Harry P. Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 Glad to hear so many of you either have a fear of, or dislike, flying - makes it easier for the rest of us! I don't have a fear of flying. I just hate what the process has evolved into... chronic flight delays, smaller and smaller seats with no leg room, invasive airport security measures, paying extra for your luggage, people being allowed on board with "carry on" bags the size of a house, boarding the plane and then sitting there for an hour before takeoff, etc. Traveling by plane has gone from being fairly enjoyable to being a major hassle. I can't imagine how anyone can like flying??? That's why I was glad that this time my destination was just a cab ride away... no airport needed!
george 53 Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Welcome Back,Harry! Glad you didn't have to fly ta get ta where ya had ta be.
Harry P. Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 Welcome Back,Harry! Glad you didn't have to fly ta get ta where ya had ta be. Me too!
Rob Hall Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 (edited) That would be rough to have a fear of flying...if I didn't fly, I wouldn't have been able to go to the interesting places I've gone over the last decade...Hawaii, Italy, the UK, France, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, LA, Indy for the Indy 500, etc.. Or the biannual trips back to E. Ohio to see family. I love travel, and flying is part of the trip.. Edited September 11, 2011 by Rob Hall

Isn't a cab ride in Chicago just another form of flying? By the way, props for nice, appropriate, exemplary use of emoticons!
Darin Bastedo Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I love to fly...It's plummeting that I hate. In a car when things start to go wrong I'm already on the ground.
Jeff Johnston Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 In a car when things start to go wrong I'm already on the ground. Ain't that the truth !!!
mikemodeler Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Harry, the problem is that you would be flying out of Chicago, one of the worse places to fly from! If the weather doesn't get you, the airlines will! I used to live there and dreaded flying from those airports and luckily I lived closer to Milwaukee and flying there was a breeze. The hassle of the TSA isn't that bad if you are prepared. What kills me is the folks that are casual fliers and get the lines backed up because they do not pay attention to the signs and instructions. A lot of airports are going to different lines for TSA depending on your experience and group that you are in. For instance, I always go thru the business/experienced traveller line because I am. The people in that line know enough to take off their belt, shoes, wallet, empty their pockets and get their laptop and toiletry bag in separate totes. Not that hard of a concept for someone who flies frequently but someone like my parents who fly every couple of years and are elderly, they see it as an infringement on their civil liberties. Not to start a war over rights, remember that flying is like driving- a privledge and if we are asked to show proper ID and ensure that we are not carrying weapons or hazardous materials, then do it without complaint.

Modelmartin Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 40 miles is out of town? I guess technically it is. It might as well be 1000 miles with Chicagoland traffic!
Harry P. Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 40 miles is out of town? I guess technically it is. It might as well be 1000 miles with Chicagoland traffic! The distance from my house to the hotel, door to door, is 38 miles. The ride took an hour and a half. That averages out to about 25 mph. Traffic around here sucks. But the hassle known as "O'Hare Field" is even worse.
Wayne Buck Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Welcome back home, Harry! It feels so good to come back to your own place (whether you were 10 miles away or 1000) after even just a couple of days. Isn't a cab ride in Chicago just another form of flying? Man, you ain't kidding! I was in Chicago a little over ten years ago and distinctly remember riding in a cab (the first and LAST time!). The guy was blasting some old Michael Jackson cassette and weaving in and out of traffic like it was a formula one race. I had never squeezed my butt cheeks together for so long and hard in my life as I did during that "ride". BTW, Chicago is such a beautiful city IMO. I remember going to the Navy Pier to some Jazz Club/restaurant (The BeBop Cafe or something...). I had such a great time there!
DanielG Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I was away too Harry so I did not know that you were gone as well. I spent what seemed like two days on ferries just so I could attend a hockey tournament and get hammered with rubber, got knocked out after two games and will probably miss at least two weeks. I did meet some nice fellows from Colorado though.

I love Chicago..have lots of friends there and briefly lived there (one summer between college semesters spent in Lincoln Park). Driving there can be fun, drove my Mustang all over there in the mid '90s...constant shifting. Had fun one winter weekend in '99 there in a rental Crown Vic. The worst big cities for driving I've been in IMO are Boston and San Francisco.
