Craig Irwin Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 A friend of mine owns a 41 Willys street rod, and I can't even convince him to pronounce it correctly.

1930fordpickup Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 If the guy who the cars were named after did not care why do you? Even Chevrolet gave up trying to get people to stop calling them a Chevy.
lordairgtar Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 (edited) it's important to know what the correct pronunciation is. I say Willys like the family pronounces their name, but I hear so many say willeez. It's in the vernacular. It does irk me about mispronunciations and I grate at them, but it isn't a big deal, and you wouldn't want to alienate your friends over it. I have friends in the model club that will pronounce JOHAN, Yohan like it was Johann, another insists on saying Aroshima instead of Aoshima, Italeri becomes Italierri from some. Not a big deal. We know what they mean when they say it. Like the argument of Bimmer and Beamer regarding the cars and bikes from Bavaria (Cars are one and Bikes are called the other), but it just comes down to douchebaggerry on that one. LOL. Jag-war or Jag-u-ar; Porsh or Porsha...does it really matter in the long run. Here's another one for you, we know of the car Mercedes Benz. The car is Mer-SAY-Deez, but the girls name that the car was named for is pronounced MER-sed-eez. Edited December 20, 2013 by lordairgtar
Chuck Kourouklis Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Well I read one British columnist ridiculing the American "JAG-war" pronunciation, insisting that "JAG-yew-er" is the only correct way to say it... Uh, 'scuse me there, Nigel St Lime? You are aware that the car is named after a LATIN AMERICAN cat, aren't you? I've yet to hear a native Nicaraguan call his country "Nic-a-RAG-yew-a" as they do in Old Blighty...

slantasaurus Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Strangely, the tallest building in Chicago is spelled Willis but pronounced Sears......

How about getting it right via the way the MANUFACTURER pronounced it (like, "whatcha doin,' Willis")? Even the estimable Donn Yost gets it wrong in his video (which I was just watching and inspired this post). BTW, nice Dagmars. I didn't know that's how its pronounced. You learn something everyday...cool Edited December 20, 2013 by slusher
sjordan2 Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Well, this is getting pretty esoteric and odd, but if you REALLY want to get anal about it, try this:The Italian Lamborghini cars are named after Spanish bull ranches, so here's the challenge: Pronounce the following Spanish names with an Italian accent (and no, they're not the same - you won't trill the r's the same or elide the same syllables)MiuraUrracoAventadorMurcielagoetc.Remember, they're Italian cars. If the Brits want to call their cars Jag-yew-ahs, shouldn't we follow suit with the manufacturer's pronunciation? (Though Jag advertising changed their approach to the American Jag-wahr version last year after trying for a while to use their version).
Chuck Kourouklis Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 (edited) Well, for my part, I wasn't suggesting Brits change their pronunciation - just that the columnist in question shouldn't have been so smug as to insist the British pronunciation was the ONLY correct way. They wanna change their icon to something else but keep the name, they can redefine the pronunciation any way they like - that sort of "fictionalizing" would make it much more akin to a family name, where no one can challenge their role as the sole arbiter of how it's said correctly. But as long as it refers to a big cat, there'll be a pronunciation regional to the actual animal to conflict with their notions of how the brand should be pronounced. I'd be interested in the Italian slant on "Murcielago", personally. Authentic to the Spanish bull, I understand the "c" should be lisped slightly, and it's the "el" that should take the accent, as I believe you actually see in the spelling of the bull's name. But danm near everyone says "mur-see-eh-LA-go". Edited December 20, 2013 by Chuck Kourouklis

Insists that it should be pronounced "Poor-shuh". So naturally everyone in the family responds "Porsche! That's what I said!" He is technically correct, but the fact that he makes such a production of it, and a matter of high importance, we just can't help having a little fun with it!EDIT: I changed it from 924S to the 944S, which it is. My bad. I used to be a tech at a dealer that sold Porsche. They are extremely critical of anyone that pronounces it any way other than Porsh-uh. They will literally stop you mid sentence and correct you. These are the Porsche reps. Our Porsche master tech also mentioned getting a Porsche tattoo (he had a VW one already) and they threatened to sue him for copyright infringement. They were dead serious. I couldn't believe it.

mikevillena Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 (edited) Porsche according to the man himself: As to Lamborghini, I am of Spanish descent so I pronounce it as a Castillian would. As to Tamiya: They've made new tooling for the Yamato which was a very old kit. Just one more reason why (at least in my personal opinion) they remain true to their motto: "First in Quality Around the World" Edited May 17, 2014 by mikevillena
