Hollywood Jim Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Thank you for the compliments ! The tarp is dried. Now it's time to decide what color to paint the tarp. Experimenting with color. Too much color in the tarp seems to take the focus away from the apple crate car. So I decided on this color. My friend Rich in Las Vegas, noticed that the tarp did not look smooth enough. So I painted it with two coats of paint. . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Jim, your instincts took you in the right direction. The tan tarp (love saying that!) connects the model in bright color to the black and white background. This thing will one day be housed in a museum. It's beautiful.
Tom Geiger Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 My goodness what happened to that? Styrene eating termites? Looks like he opened the doors with the old AutoWorld panel cutter tool!
charlie8575 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Looks like he opened the doors with the old AutoWorld panel cutter tool! Wasn't that described by most as one of the worst tools ever devised for model car building? And I have to agree,Jim. This is really a work of art. Charlie Larkin
Hollywood Jim Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 Thanks guys !! The last few details are added, before I start work on what goes center stage. I painted the lawn mower. Making a water hose. Trash box. This area is finished. Here are a few things for the floor. I don't want to glue down anything that goes on the center of the floor. This will allow me some flexability in subject matter. . . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Beautiful. Love the way you incorporated the watch parts into that lawn mower blade roller. Sweet.
gasser59 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Genius, sheer genius!! OK, now the stage is set and its time for the next act. Up goes the curtain, let the performance begin.
Randy D Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Hi Jim, I'm with Brad on this one, it's so much fun to watch this unfold!!! Randy
Hollywood Jim Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 Thank you. I found a little boy figure I like. Last night I modified his arms. It is not finished yet. . . . .
Hollywood Jim Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 OK, all the details on the shelves and walls are finished. Standby for the floor layout. . . . .
Tom Geiger Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Brilliant Jim! Such a refreshing change from the dioramas that are merely sprinkled with kit parts! Not a wheel with lugs nuts still on it in sight!
Hollywood Jim Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 (edited) Brilliant Jim! Such a refreshing change from the dioramas that are merely sprinkled with kit parts! Not a wheel with lugs nuts still on it in sight! Thank you Tom ! I don't like dioramas where there are model car wheels and hub caps glued all over the walls; too high for the 3 inch figures to reach them. LOL. The wheels and tires are outside the back door, where most people would keep them. ( I still may add a wheel and tire leaning against the wall. ) . . . Edited January 23, 2013 by Hollywood Jim
Hollywood Jim Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 I need your help !! I have been so close to this diorama I can’t see it anymore. I mean I can’t see it objectively, I’m too attached to it. So I want everyone to give me your opinion. I need some new eyes to tell me if I’m missing something. As soon as I figure out how I’m going to layout the items on the floor, I will think about maybe adding some lighting. Please don’t be offended if I don’t use your idea. One note. When figures are added to a diorama it can quickly go from serious theme to cartoon looking. I want to use the least amount of figures as possible to get the point across. Tell me which layout you like the best. Or if you have other ideas. A Only one red hot rod. B Only apple crate car and kid. C Apple crate car, kid and hot rod. D Apple crate car, kid, big sister, hot rod E Apple crate car, kid, hot rod and Dad (looking at his hot rod) F Apple crate car, kid, hot rod, Dad, and grandfather G Apple crate car, kid, hot rod and Dad. Motorcycle or a second car to fill the space of the double car garage. This second vehicle would be painted in black and white. Thank you for your help !! . . . .
Tom Geiger Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 OK, all the details on the shelves and walls are finished. ( I still may add a wheel and tire leaning against the wall. ) I just knew you couldn't leave well enuf alone!
SoCalCarCulture Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 My vote goes to E. Your work as well as your concepts are always exceptional Jim, I look forward to seeing this in person!
charlie8575 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I'd combine D, E, and F. Make it a family affair. Very nice job. Where did you find the reel mower? Charlie Larkin
gasser59 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Although any of these options would be a good choice, my vote is for E. Each figure has a hot rod and the son is aspiring to be like his dad.
David G. Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Any one of the scenes would be great, but I favor "E". David G.
James2 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I would say, Go with what inspired you in the first place! "A" or simply add the mechanic.
Tom Geiger Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 F with a few mods... give grampa his walking papers... and the kids, I like the taller one, but is that a girl? If so use both kids. And revisit it after you detail paint the little guy. Right now his blue tone in the black and white diorama is giving me the creeps!
