Hideous mish-mash. but I like the surroundings, the house and grounds remind me of places I've seen in Ohio. (I do wonder where the pic was taken, the house looks really familiar from the area of Eastern Ohio I'm from).

The clunky-looking front end is the problem... the rest of the car isn't all that awful.

Yeah it is...

2X4 frame that's more appropriate for a garden implement trailer. Huge ground clearance, enough for a 4X4, and a step to get into it. Square-tube traction bars (?) on the rear end, looking like something from a farm implement. No relationship between the rear fenders and the tires, and the fenders are hanging wonky as well. Ridiculously, un-necessarily long wheelbase for who knows what reason. Everything's wrong. I mean, this mess is about as close to a hot-rod as a five-year-old with Legos could build.

...yeah it is...awful...all of it.

The following statements in no way invalidate any of the opinions already stated...

now, admittedly...it doesn't fit the esthetic tastes of everyone but consider a few points regarding the yellow vehicle with flame paint job:

1. it may have turned out exactly how they wanted it to (and that's okay).

2. maybe they don't have access to what we may consider more esthetically pleasing cars and have no idea how to make it look better (in our eyes).

3. maybe they had only the parts you see and did the best they could with what they had.

4. this may be "juniors first hot rod".

and now for the really controversial question...

If a forum member had posted this in Under Glass as a scale creation of their own, would all of the opinions already stated here still have been posted and following those posts that thread would have to be locked due to hurt feelings and flame wars?

Unless this guy did it all by himself in a dark garage, one has to wonder why someone, somewhere, never told him how hideous it is. Textbook case for "the sum of the parts is greater than the whole" Even the trailer is ugly.

The monochromatic nature of it and the tunnel ram screams 1990. It's not a bad rod, just dated. Definitely a home made frame, done by someone with more welding skill than engineering prowess.

It has the look of a tractor pull type thing. Long wheelbase, big block, massive ladder bars. I think someone with some skills could make a decent rod out of this. But man, that grill has got to go.

Yeah, if this was a model the thread would not have much in the way of replies.

There's a principle here, and I choke on this Politically Correct thing where everything, no matter how awful or poorly conceived and executed, is somehow praiseworthy.

To take that to its logical conclusion, a Yugo or a Chevette is the equal of a Lamborghini Miura or a Jag D-type.

No.

Just because someone 'showed up for class' and 'tried', they don't rate an "A". Excellence still counts, mediocrity is mediocrity and trash is trash.

There's nothing wrong with stating the truth about a hideous mess when it is in fact a hideous mess.

If the owner is happy with that, I sincerely question his judgment, and his grasp of concepts like automobile, proportion, design, hot-rod, and worthwhile. I admire the fact he stayed with it and got it done, but I really can't comprehend anyone thinking that it looks good.

And if this were a model on the forum, I'd just not say anything rather than needlessly hurt someone who thought he'd done well...but come on. This thing is awful.

But it's also kinda like...if I had a big zit on my nose that was runny and gross and I didn't notice it, I think it would be kinder to TELL me than to pretend it looked good.

If that's REALLY the best someone can do, why bother?

Not helpful at all. :(

Oh please. I'm the first one to praise good design, good workmanship, and a sincere desire to learn to do things right, and I certainly do my share of being "helpful" concerning techniques and 1:1 practice.

I also routinely praise things that aren't my particular taste, if they're well proportioned, well thought-out and well executed.

But, the car in this thread is horrible design-wise, and letting it stand as an example of good work to a new modeler is a dis-service to folks who actually might want to learn something about proportion and style.
