KWT Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 It's the entitled attitude brought on by the participation trophy era... that's the only excuse for dang near anything anymore.
Dodge Driver Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 (edited) I'd have an easier time understanding your point if you would elaborate on your definition of "periphially engaged".Far as being told "something or someone is going to kill us (or at least take all that we have) at any given moment" goes, only a few years prior to my birth, the first atomic weapons had been used in anger. The world was a little jittery then, and for good reason. School kids were taught the "duck and cover move" (not that it would do much good) and every time a big plane flew over, a lot of people looked up in fear. Some people used THAT as their justification to screw unto others as fast as you can, but it was far from the seemingly universal standard-operating-procedure it has become.Today, the only real threat any individual faces is that some sociopath, hiding behind a poorly-reasoned religious or ethnic grievance, may open up on a room or street full of innocent bystanders. It's not quite the same thing as an ever-present threat of global thermonuclear holocaust. And I do get so very tired of excuses and justifications for everything these days, no matter how morally reprehensible.By peripherally engaged, I mean those who react to sound bites and headlines without applying any common sense, fact or reason to their actions. For example, our food is going to kill us. A giant asteroid is going to kill us. Driving the wrong car is going to kill us. ( I'm deliberately avoiding political examples, but you know them). People drive themselves crazy trying to avoid or strike back at the threat of the day. My question was meant to be mild sarcasm, which I failed to convey. I marvel at the overall lack of threats we face. That lack is in stark contrast to the ongoing hysteria that seems way too common and out of proportion. Edited July 2, 2017 by Dodge Driver
Dragline Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 I am personally involved a with a great many movements on-line and YouTube and I can tell you all this much. This line of conversation can cause a great deal of trouble. I have my opinions like everyone else and have had my share of ideological differences with the say SJW and BLM types out there. As a conservative [not in vogue currently] I am constantly barraged with all manner of the "peripherally engaged". They are a vocal sort to be sure and have no shortage of names they use to box you into a corner if you let them. I choose facts and reality in my approach but that only infuriates them since they deal only in "feelings". It's like bashing your head into a stone column. The real threats are out there if you care to look.
oldnslow Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Just looked at my photo bucket and found out it has been deleted , nothing there but a blank page.

Rob Hall Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 (edited) Chase Bank has had a massive outage today..haven't been able to access my accounts on the website or mobile app for hours...very annoying. I've heard people have had issues with the ATMs, debit and credit cards as well not working...Edit: was able to login to the website and mobile app, everything looks ok w/ my accounts. Mighty suspicious to have an outage right before a national holiday.. Edited July 3, 2017 by Rob Hall

espo Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 Always keep some cash hidden in the house somewhere just in case of something like this. If banks get hacked or the power grid goes down how are you going to buy a beer when you need one, think about it. Like a Boy Scout be prepared.

Being "prepared" is a good motto and usually pays off at certain times.
Tom Geiger Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 Or just keep a few cases of beer around... that will be the new currency after the zombie apocalypse!

Atmobil Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Photobucket changed their "terms of service" on June 20, with a new pricing plan. Only the $399 per-year option will allow linking to photos stored there to display in online forums ("3rd party hosting"). Many free users have had their accounts frozen and their pictures blocked, and have received emails to this effect. So far, as far as I know, paying members have not yet been shut down or emailed. See the forum topic here...http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/124268-photobucket/?page=1Ok, I have paid for photobucket before (can't remeber how much it was but it was not 400$ a year anyway) to get the ads off the site. This must be the reason I have heard nothing.

Roadrunner Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017 After considerable effort, we've erected a rather large, squirrel proof enclose to protect the tomato plants here, as last year the little tree rats devastated them, and the plants have really been flourishing. Today I discover that hornworm caterpillars, are eating the daylights out of the foliage! I guess that tomorrow I'll have to spray them down with an appropriate insecticide.

waynehulsey Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 Several things today; but the one that is just disgusting and confirming my feelings that the American IQ is dropping: that the state governor had to issue a statement for people to stop stealing debris from the military plane wreckage site and that they can be prosecuted for it.
Tom Geiger Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 (edited) Enterprise Car Rental! I booked a standard size sedan to take an important person from NJ to Syracuse, NY for business. This morning my wife drops me off to pick up the car and guess what? They had no cars. The guy points at this Ford crew cab 4x4 and tells me that's my car! Um no. Before mentioned important person will not be scrambling up into this friggin thing. Then I overhear them offering the guy in line behind me a Dodge Caravan. I turn around and yell that I would take the Caravan. Clown behind the counter then back peddles that there is no Caravan. After a few more minutes (now they're giving the crew cab to the guy behind me) and they pull a Ford Fiesta out of their hat. Still not the right car but I'm stuck and late at this point so I take it. As I'm pulling out of the lot, they pull the Caravan out from the garage. I get to the pickup point, and the mentioned important person complains that the car is too small. Oh, Enterprise is going to suffer the wrath of Tom on Friday.Ford Fiesta? The 6 hour test drive that convinced me I'd never want to own one. Locally it's peppy and goes where you point it. On the hilly ride to Syracuse it struggles and spent a lot of time down shifted to make hills. Quite a bit under powered. And way too small to put business customers into. And here I had thought that everyone was important, yes? You should have taken the crew cab, as anything smaller than a Focus is "too small."

Shoot, that's been going on forever. Somebody tried to sell Clark Gable some of his wife Carole Lombard's jewelry they picked up when her plane crashed in 1942. Knute Rockne's plane crash in 1931 was similarly souvenired: (University of Notre Dame Archives)
crazyjim Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Gee Tom, why didn't you reserve a specific type of vehicle prior to your trip? I'm able to do that with Alamo all the time.
cobraman Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 I have been using Enterprise for 10 years about 3 times each year. Never a problem and almost always get a free upgrade. Maybe I just have a good one close to the house.
cobraman Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 My irk is the many car shows on TV. I watch most of them because I do like cars but why to they all have to stick in all that silly junk and games they play. On another note one shop likes to customize cars by changing to larger wheels and doing a wrap on the car. That's customizing ? I guess it is but that one I don't tune into anymore.

With belonging to two model car clubs, going to cruise nights and some car shows, attending the drag strip occasionally, building model cars, etc. I have my fill of cars and don't watch any car shows on TV. I tried a few of them and it seemed like it was 5 minutes of cars and 55 minutes of BS.
