Chuck Most Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Ford never had a direct competitor to the '94-66 Impala SS, but I got to wondering one day "what if they had?" So, from me, the king of awful gloss black paint jobs comes this gloss black sedan, built from the Lindberg Ohio Highway Patrol kit, with the wheels and tires from a Revell '62 Impala, a modified grille and exhaust, and a center console from a '66 Galaxie. The name? Well, I guessed if Chevy could blow the dust off the Impala SS moniker for their giant killer, why couldn't Ford have done the same thing with the Galaxie XL name? Oh, the other thing I hate about gloss black models (besides the fact I can't paint them) is how they attract mucho amounts of dust at an alarming rate... you'll see more than a few dust specs in the photos.
crazyjim Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Looks a lot like an Impala. Those are really nice wheels.
o-man Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Looking good! You forget about the Mercury Marauder.
Rob Hall Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Neat idea..I mocked up something like that, never finished..I was using the '99 Cobra wheels & tires. Looking good! You forget about the Mercury Marauder. I wish that had been kitted.
hjracing Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Wow! really cool phantom project! Nice detailed.
Chuck Most Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 Looking good! You forget about the Mercury Marauder. On the contrary- I've got a '98 Crown Vic around here somewhere that's about 1/3 of the way to being an '03 Marauder. And Rob- yeah, that's one I wish they'd kitted as well. Thanks guys!
Agent G Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I like that, a lot. I've spent a lot of time driving these cars from '79 on up. I never understood why Ford didn't do this. G
Skydime Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 That's a very nice build there Chuck. Did you make some sort of change to the Impala wheels? They look more billet than chrome. That's a very good thing in my book!
slusher Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Very cool build and has a sinister look in black with those wheels Chuck...l like it..
geemoney Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 nice! the marauder came close, too little too late, standard for FoMoCo.
george 53 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I like your Crown Vic. I built one just like it. It makes me kinda crazy that Lindberg DIDN'T pop it as a FULL detail kit, it's THAT nice! I have another one, just waitin to see what I can use for an engine compartment before I start cuttin on it! i heard a Taurus Sho e/c would fit, but NOT without allota work ,to me. I DO like those wheels!
Tom Geiger Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 My grandfather and father were both full size Ford LTD / Crown Vic guys. Upon my father's death I wound up with the very last Vic. One my grandfather had bought new and passed on to my father when he stopped driving. So I drove it. And learned that it really was a very nice car to drive. I remember being on a Ford dealer lot and seeing a new Crown Vic, not much chrome on it with a blacked out grill. It was a civilian car, and had bucket seats, console and floor shifter. I can't remember the year, but it nearly came home with me!
Harry P. Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Very nice. The thin chrome trim around the side windows is nicely done.
Kris Morgan Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I am a huge Vic fan Chuck. That came out great. UMMMMM, We need to talk 'bout that Marauder(LOL hint, hint)
Rob Hall Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I remember being on a Ford dealer lot and seeing a new Crown Vic, not much chrome on it with a blacked out grill. It was a civilian car, and had bucket seats, console and floor shifter. I can't remember the year, but it nearly came home with me! Sounds like the LX Sport trim level.
Foxer Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 (edited) Nice job on the '92 Crown Vic! ... front looks perfect. Edited November 16, 2013 by Foxer
jefropas Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 I actually preferred driving the 95-97 CV's over the newer 98-11's...much funner and entertaining to drive...nice model... Jeff
Chuck Most Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Thanks guys! Now I'm sort of thinking of taking another one of these, modifying it into a Grand Marquis, and doing a phantom '92-97 Marauder.
charlie8575 Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Thanks guys! Now I'm sort of thinking of taking another one of these, modifying it into a Grand Marquis, and doing a phantom '92-97 Marauder. Send it to Jeff if you do the Grand Marquis so I can build one of my grail 1:1s. Nice job on this one, Chuck. Charlie Larkin
kilrathy10 Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 It looks pretty good with those rims and tires on it....The paint is convincing, enough....I think it looks good.....
