It's not funny, Joe. You know the feeling when you get a desire for something? It won't be Portillo's tonight, but it will be Italian beef using my secret recipe.

Oh, I understand, I managed to wrack up both ankles so bad last night I had to call off at work for today due to barely being able to walk and Portillo's sounds really good right now...... but have no way to get there, no money to spend on it if I could, and I'm unwilling to ask my Dad or Sister to get some for me.

BIG decision made today. Marcia went out to the store to buy some thinly sliced roast beef. Tonight for dinner I'm going to make my version of Italian beef with crinkle cut fries. See what you guys started?

Ha! The place we all go out in Salt Lake City is Crown Burger. A Crown Burger is a large cheeseburger with a big heap of pastrami on top. For that far out west, they do a very thin, moist tasty pastrami that gets put on your burger along with their fry sauce. Simply heaven! I have made Crown Burgers at home more than once!

Yeah, and we had a couple of Crown Burgers in Denver. One was just 1/2 mile from my office. Spent way too many lunches there! Discovering the GSL tradition of Crown Burgering was old home to me!

I make at home, too. (The fry sauce is available at the grocery store.) In fact, had one just night before last! Mmmmm. B)

This thread ( off track a bit ? ) was making me hungry when reading yesterday so I decided to use a "cheat" day ( I'm on a diet ) and went to a burger place that came highly recommended. It's in Phoenix and called "Two Hippies Gnarley Burger Joint ". Very small place tucked behind another building but was worth the drive. It was one of the best burgers I have had in a long time. I had a cheeseburger on a onion roll with onion rings. My wife had the cheeseburger on a potato bun with fries. Everything was great ! I would go back. I thought 21 bucks for 2 was a tad high for burgers but the food was good so I really don't mind. If your ever near it give it a try.

I made Crazy Italian beef last night for dinner. It's not Portillo's but at least I got my Italian beef desire fulfilled.

What's the recipe, Jim? What makes beef Italian beef?

Posted

Thinly sliced beef, can of beef stock (like soup), garlic, oregano, green peppers.

And a loaf of fresh Italian bread! And some gardiniera to top it off (that's the Chicago way!).

I remember Crown Burger in Denver..good stuff. Speaking of pastrami sandwiches, there is a really good deli in my PHX 'hood called Miracle Mile Deli--had a delicious hot bbq pastrami sandwich there yesterday.

I've known and loved Miracle Mile Deli since about a week after I moved here. The best is their Haystack sandwich. :)

Crown Burgers I made myself! I can't prove it because I ate the evidence!

Corned beef on a hamburger???

That's...different.

We'll probably be using the grill sometime in the next couple of weeks. I have a huge amount of stuff to get out of the freezer.
