Harry P. Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 This is a real change of pace for me... such a tiny little model!!! I usually build big scale, mostly 1/12 or 1/8, so working on such a tiny little model was a real experience! It's the Revell of Germany XK-120. This is the kit: I actually had started this several years ago, but lost interest about 90% through. I finally dug it out and decided to finish it. As you can see, I tried to match the box art. The paint is a DupliColor Chrysler color, don't remember what I painted the interior with. I had to scratchbuild the wipers and rearview mirror (missing from my kit). The "upholstery" roll around the cockpit was molded as part of the body, so I had to paint it to match the interior. I also added the snaps for where the soft top would attach to the body. I also added valve stems to the wheels and blackwashed the grille. I painted the engine but didn't wire or detail it... so not much to see under the hood.
cobraman Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Cool ! Has to be larger than that last model you built ! : )
sjordan2 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Very slick. I especially like it with the "spats" on.
Tom Geiger Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Very cool classic Jag! Love the lines on it. That's a kit I don't have, so I'll have to keep an eye out for one. How is the kit overall? Is it ROG or something they reboxed?
Matt Bacon Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 That's a stellar job, Harry, really... I only hope that I can get close when I do mine. It's a beautiful car, I think (one of the MOST beautiful, IMHO), and as Skip says, the rear wheel covers give it a real period feel... Anyone wanting to see just how close Harry got: http://www.xkdata.com/gallery/zoom/?id=127264 Here's the real 678 NOK. Nailed, it, I'd say! bestest, M.
Harry P. Posted January 9, 2014 Author Posted January 9, 2014 Cool ! Has to be larger than that last model you built ! : ) Actually it's a lot smaller. This thing is teeny-tiny.
Sixties Sam Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Very nice build! I like the Jag XK's. Why is the mirror on the left on a right hand drive car? Sam
DonW Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) Very nice build! I like the Jag XK's. Why is the mirror on the left on a right hand drive car? Sam With the hood up you can't see anything on the nearside rear quarter from inside the car unless you have an external mirror. To the offside, the driver can just look over his / her shoulder! Lovely model Harry btw! Oh and another thing - nothing you were likely to meet on the road when this was new was ever going to be overtaking you! Edited January 9, 2014 by DonW
realgone58 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Very slick. I especially like it with the "spats" on. I'll second that. Very, very nice looking build!
Harry P. Posted January 9, 2014 Author Posted January 9, 2014 It's funny how you can see things in photos that you don't see in the "real world." I saw that the left side rear bumper was mounted crooked. Fixed it...
Belugawrx Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Very nice Harry Your keeping to your niche of spoked wheels clean build but pics are a little grainy....just sayin
realgone58 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 It's funny how you can see things in photos that you don't see in the "real world." I saw that the left side rear bumper was mounted crooked. Fixed it... I didn't notice. However, I do know what you mean. I always see things in my pics that "bug" me a bit that I never noticed in person.
sjordan2 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Actually it's a lot smaller. This thing is teeny-tiny.The whole model may be teeny-tiny to you, but is it overall any smaller than the subassemblies like engines, etc., that you you put into 1/16 or 1/12 models?
Harry P. It's a small car in real life, and a very small model in 1/25 scale, even more so when you're used to building big 1/8 scale models of big cars (Mercedes, RR). I don't know how some guys superdetail models at this scale. I literally can't work that small! My fingers just don't go down that small!
Harry P. Posted January 9, 2014 Author Posted January 9, 2014 clean build but pics are a little grainy....just sayin Yeah, I noticed that. Edges are a bit jagged...I was using a different photo setup, maybe that's the problem. The photo of the wipers that I took on my bench with just the camera's flash looks ok. Must be the different lighting setup I was using on the finished model shots. I'll have to play around with it some more.
