Question about an AMT single axle trailer

Does anyone have pics of the reissued AMT Piranha Drag Team kit's trailer? I'm curious if it's the same as the above trailer or the AMT Fireball 500 kit's trailer.

 

The trailer included with the reissued Piranha Drag Team appears to be the same as the one in the '64 Vette HT:

The SMP "mail order" trailer, which is the four wheel unit from the '60-'61 Chevy pickup kits.

I got two instruction sheets, two decal sheets, and two chrome trees with mine.  Notice that the chrome trees are not identical, they are mirror images of each other.  That would seem to indicate that these were molded separately from the pickup kits, at least for the mail order version.  I wonder why they didn't try to issue it as a stand-alone kit in a regular box.

Thanks for posting that, Mark. Odd that chrome parts were included, other than the six stanchions if you chose to build the display base. I guess they had to include the hitch ball piece, though?

Are the fuel can boxes included in your kit? Part #12 on the SMP '61 Chevy Apache instruction sheet step C, below:

I'll have to pull that out again and check the instruction sheet.  I've been wanting to take some measurements off of some of the parts, to scratch a copy of it built as the display base.

No, but the Cal Drag Combo kit is due out within the next few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled on eBay for one, or buy the kit, keep the trailer, and sell/trade off the rest. Ertl also offered the trailer as a stand-alone item as the Blueprinter Service Trailer, and those pop up on eBay every now and then, too.

 

Not the trailer was updated/modified, too, so I'm not sure when the last time was that it was reissued in its original form, as seen in Mark's image, but I think it was first modified for the AMT Modified Stocker Hauler and Truck kit, like so:

There are five versions of that four-wheel SMP (later AMT) trailer that I can account for:

-the first version in the Chevy pickup kits

-second version as a stand-alone item.  The stand-alone trailer does not include the fuel can boxes, there are other differences too.

-third version as included in the late Sixties drag combo sets.  Side skirts deleted, new deeper open wheels, trailer generally looks more up to date for the time.

-fourth version as included in the Modified Stocker Hauler set, with the tire rack and "wind breaker" up front.

-fifth version as sold via the Ertl Blueprinter mail order offer: chrome slotted wheels replacing the previous open wheels.

this trailer always looked to wide , the last one I built I narrowed it and added the fenders from the MPC clear trailer

That's what I recall, a trailer like these associated with about a 1960 or 61 Ford pickup. And some kind of drag car. I know I built the combo back then at any rate but 1960ish is a mighty long time ago lol ! Seems to me in the end I coupled it to the 53 Ford pickup with whatever overhead valve optional engine came with that kit. I also built the stock version of the 53 at another time. But then I built a couple Corvettes too but I think they were too early to have included the trailer.

Monogram also had a trailer a while back.. I managed to snag 2 of those before they all disappeared... I haven't seen those in over 20 years..

Would the last one be the same trailer that came in the Bronco/Cougar F/C set?

The trailer you are talking about was also in the "Diamond in the Rough" kit. 53 Ford P/U, the service trailer and a 40 Ford sedan Barn/field find in as found condition. The 40 included dented/rusted fenders, one front fender and one running board not attached, bent bumpers, torn upholstery and broken/bullet holed glass. Only issued just the once as far as I know. This is also the source of the single running board in many of the reissued 40 Ford kits since. One of my favorite kits as a kid.

I still like the 40 Ford kit, I noticed and extra running board in the one I built as a 39 a couple years ago and wondered why. Now I know, it's sedan incidentally which somehow I always liked a tad more than the coupe. Most of my coupes got cut down into circle track cars way back when ( 1964ish).

Here is my two axle trailer. I have no idea how I came to own it as it simply in a sealed bag. I made a few mods like the tool box and the spare tire carrier. I used textured paint for the tracks. Unfortunately, the solvents have made the Chevelle a permanent load on this one.

I went nuts trying to find the friggin ramps! At least I now know there aren’t any!  I don’t like that conversation to 4 wheels so I’ll just go with a two wheel trailer.  And since this one doesn’t have any fenders, I’ll figure out something!
