Greg Cullinan Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Wish I could make a half a million dollars from fixing up a pair of old cars. Pretty cool find.
bbowser Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 (edited) Cool find, maybe. Holy grail, i don't think so. Firebirds were a derivative of the Camaro which were hastily assembled by Chevy to combat the Mustang (3 years later)! Most consider them "pony cars". Edited April 19, 2014 by bbowser

mike 51 Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Fox news and the Gas Monkeys.. .unimpeachable sources,LOL.
1930fordpickup Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 These are cool cars and a nice find but not a Holy Grail find.
Danno Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Those are great PONY car finds, but not muscle cars. I thought Richard gAss Monkey was also off-base in referencing them as 'starting' the muscle car era. Last I checked, the experts still consider the '64 GTO as the ignition of the muscle car genre, although some old-schoolers like to cite the '49-'50 Olds Rocket 88s.
Jon Haigwood Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Yes I would call it a "Pony" car not a "muscle " car. The GTO was Pontiac's "Muscle" car
Harry P. Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Fox news and the Gas Monkeys.. .unimpeachable sources,LOL. The story is from the New York Post.
Modelmartin Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 The story is from the New York Post.Even better.......not!Me LOL too!
Harry P. Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Even better.......not! Me LOL too! Why? The story is real. What's so funny? I don't get it. It's not a political story, there is no political angle or bias involved... so what's the difference whether it comes from a liberal or conservative source? You guys need to get a grip. There can be stories that are not political, you know? Everything isn't left vs. right. You political idealogues really need to take off the partisan blinders.
Longbox55 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Cool find, maybe. Holy grail, i don't think so. Firebirds were a derivative of the Camaro which were hastily assembled by Chevy to combat the Mustang (3 years later)! Most consider them "pony cars". It should be noted, the Camaro was in development about the same time the Mustang came out, as a sporty version of the Nova. The first prototype was shown at the 1964 New York Auto Show, under the name "Super Nova".

Longbox55 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Here's a pic of the Super Nova. The basic body shape is there, especially in roofline. I'm considering building a replica of it, possibly using a Revell '69 Camaro as a starting point.
tbill Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 holy grail muscle car? 65 chevelle z16 convert., that is a grail if ever was one. [in my opinion anyway]
Danno Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Interesting. I always thought that Camaro was GM's hurried answer to the Mustang. They were also developing the concept but they really got caught with their pants down when Lee Iacocca pushed the Mustang through faster. GM didn't even know Ford had it in development, so they were taking their sweet time (as was often the case) and were in no hurry. All of a sudden, the Mustang was being introduced while GM was still screwing around with all their committees and such.
gtx6970 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Somehow I doubt 'Holy Grail ' and ' Firebird should ' be in the same sentence. Rare ? yes. Cool ? absolutely Holy Grail ? doubt it !!!! IMO

I'm considering building a replica of it, possibly using a Revell '69 Camaro as a starting point. That is (was) a beautiful car. Go for it, Bill! I'd love to see a nice replica of that seriously stellar design!
Longbox55 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I have a few ideas in mind how I'm going to do it. I have found that the headlamps and grille can be made from parts in the AMT '69 Chevelle. I'll have to do some more research to get the other details, like the rear fascia/tail lights, but that shouldn't be a problem for me now,as I originally had this idea back in the dark ages before the internet
58 Impala Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 It was a cool find but those Gas Monkey guys remind me of the Earl Shibes type of bodyshop turning over bondo buckets and asking for top dollar.
Craig Irwin Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Interesting. I always thought that Camaro was GM's hurried answer to the Mustang. The Camaro was FAR from rushed, but the truth is that the Mustang was a response to the Chevy Corvair Monza.
blunc Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 there seem to be a LOT of "truths" floating around. and just maybe these birds are a "Holy Grail" for Pontiac enthusiasts.
CJ1971 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 (edited) Cool cars for sure ? ... Holy Grail? No. ? To a Pontiac guy, maybe ? Many more cooler & rarer muscle cars out there... Some found... Some still waiting to be found. $325K apiece is quite a lot but when it's a really rare "holy grail" car, the price would & has been in the million/s. Just read about a restored 1964 GT40 Prototype changing hands @ Mecum Auto Auctions for $7million... I guess Rawlings should go back to Holy Grail school ?? Edited April 20, 2014 by CJ1971
