What did you see on the road today?

Recommended Posts

If you talk to a salesmen (my uncle is one ) that worked at a dealership when they were new, they same the same thing . A two seater for the money they lacked the power they could of had. Mustangs were cheaper and faster. I liked the newer Thunderbirds I wish they would have kept them going.

Yea, the wrong car at the wrong time. And there weren't a lot of them at the dealers, which also deterred sales. I remember looking to see one in person when they first came out and I couldn't find any at dealers. Then I saw a brand new one sitting at a classic car dealer. I asked and he said it was the only one delivered to the local Ford dealer, and he wanted them to take it to auction. The dealer greed thing also hurt sales. I know when I was interested in new cars and dealers wanted to play that + list deal it just turned me off and I never bought the car, even when they became plentiful after a few months.

The T-bird was done on the Lincoln LS platform and envisioned as a luxury two seater. I don't know if they didn't sell well or if Ford kept the supply low on purpose. My thought at the time was that if they had taken that body shell, and put it on a low end chassis.. even the Escort chassis like a convertible EXP, at a cheap price, they would've sold a mess of them!

Yesterday I was sitting at a light and up ahead I saw a street rod on an equally cool street rod style car carrier pull out of the Pep Boys lot.. then it got mixed in with traffic and once my light changed, I had no idea where it went. And I had my camera on my seat next to me. Darn!

Blech..that would be a nasty 4cyl fwd convertible..recipe for failure. A horrible idea, as bad as the FWD Mustang idea was back in the 80s (that became the Probe).

I always thought those "new" T-birds were pretty nice looking cars. I guess they just didn't catch on... :(

lil dumb tidbit and I guess my only claim to those T-Birds. Those T-Birds had a torx-bit to remove the top and ford had a special T-Handle torx tool that came with the new birds when you bought it. The tool had the thunderbird printed on it. I printed most of those birds on the handle for the printing Company I worked for at the time.

I used to live in Santa Barbara and there were the occasional Rolls or something of that nature back in the late 70s. I myself drove a 73 Eldo ragtop plus a 54 Chevy lowrider and a 69 Buick Special muscle car. But I really don't think that there were that many cars of the hot rod type in SB. Now I live near Milwaukee and we a choc-a-block with all manor of cars from street rods, super cars and sports cars, tuner types, even JDMs. Lot's of classics. Saw a 2014 Vette at my cruise night plus a Ferarri of some newer type. Check wednesdaynightclassics.com and check the schedules for cruise nights and shows. So many cruise nights in the area and we get maybe 50 to 60 cars at mine alone. The one down the road a mile away has like a hundred on the same night.

Living in California, I've seen all sorts of cool stuff on the road. But today, I made a conscience effort to remember what I saw on the road. I drive into Santa Barbara almost every day. When I first left the house this morning there was a 1969 Shelby Mustang Convertible (a local car I see a couple times a week). I passed a 1969 Charger R/T SE (I also see this car frequently). Then there was a Datsun 1600 Roadster, a '36 Chevy Coupe, and the same fleet of BMW I8s I've seen for the last 6 months (with manufacturer's plates and all sorts of instrumentation inside the cars). I find it strange the BMW is always testing cars on the back roads near my place. You'd think they would be doing this work in Germany. They do have a design center somewhere near here, but I don't know where it is.

I also saw some unknown BMW slightly bigger than a SmartCar, again with manufacturer's plate on it.

We have lots of Teslas, both the sportscar and the sedan. We also have a lot of rich tree hungers that thinks they are saving the world by owning one.

When I got off the freeway after a 20 minute drive, I got cut off by an absolutely original Porsche 356 C: dirty faded white paint, original black plate, blowing blue smoke out of the exhaust. Then there was a '56 Chevy truck, a few '69-'71 El Caminos, a couple '69 Cameros.

At lunch I went out and saw a really clean '48 Ford Sedan. We have lots of Ferraris and Lamborghinis but we have a lot of rich people that buy those cars. There were a few late '60s early '70s AMCs running around also.

On the way home I saw a nice Model A street rod and a 1959 Buick (that might not count because it belongs to my client's grandson).

Then there was the beater 1970 Challenger (I was driving that one).

There are a lot of hidden car collections in the area where I live. Every once and awhile we have barn finds but they tend to be pretty big.

A short time ago, another one of my clients wanted me to meet a friend of his to see what ite would take to get some of his cars running. The man owns 5 buildings full of cars. (Check out the photo.) On the back wall of that building it is not a mirror, that's another room full of cars. There are about 90 cars in this building. This local Santa Barbarab has been collecting cars for years.

Yesterday I took my wife for a ride to a hobby shop a distance away because we had seen Sonic restaurants but never tried one, and there's a Sonic right near the shop. I thought it would be neat to take my Tracker convertible to the drive in restaurant. As we're sitting there eating in the car, I keep seeing neat old cars driving by on the highway. Every few cars, there was a cool one... sometimes two together. Little did I know that they were going to a cruise night right in the Sonic parking lot! As we went to pull out, the entire other side of the lot was covered with collector cars! So of course we parked again and took a look.

Today in Knoxville, I saw a massive number of Nissans, Toyotas, Fords with an Aston grille, SUVs and a buncha other stuff. Wow.

However, while I was waiting for my Infiniti to get serviced, I stepped into the dealer's Jaguar showroom to check out a 100% original XK 140. Nice.

On the way back from dinner tonite saw a '90s Blazer/Tahoe 2dr w/ a Ford 'Super Duty' trim applique on the tailgate. Don't know if it had a Super Duty grille up front, didn't see the front. Weird. Also saw a primered, stripped '61-62 Olds F85 2dr at a body shop.
