Went out in my driveway this morning and found this! Just when I was thinking “what da?”  I remembered! I bought it yesterday!

The Worst part is that it was a deliberate decision that effectively killed the Canadian Aerospace Industry. At least the bulk of it. The U.S. Aerospace business was gifted with some Canadian talent who left Canada and moved here for jobs. The old Wings/Airpower Magazine had a long 2 or three part article about the whole debacle back in the 1980's.

The trusty Accord was in the shop yesterday for a new battery, tune up and a couple of small issues and it's running fantastic. The new plugs really smoothed out the rough idling the car had.  And the bill was reasonable. A little cruising is in store for this weekend which is expected to be nice and fall like in New England.

My wife and I wet out to some dark skies with our telescope. Checked out a new (to us) spot, and we think it's going to work out great. We've been looking for a nice, relatively close in spot for years. Nice to have this quality of life improvement checked off.

Is it dark enough that you can see the Milky Way on a moonless night?

So sad that's even a question.

I lived the early part of my life in a suburb of a major midwestern city, and "light pollution" wasn't yet a standard thing.

I could go outside most any cloudless night and see the Milky Way, no problem.

We've lost a lot by becoming a "civilization" that fears the dark because of crime perpetrated by our fellow humans.

The Milky Way was readily seen. The moon hadn't risen by the time we left so don't know what it would be like with the moon up. There was a lot of moisture in the air that evening, so transparency wasn't great, but still good.

I've been looking for a location around here without success. There have been a couple of times in recent years where certain solar activity has made the Aurora Borealis visible much farther south than usual but try finding a dark enough location to see it. Last time I was out looking I needed the cars navigation to get back to familiar ground.

Couple times in the last 2 years it's been visible from my place in NW Arizona, which is several miles away from a smallish town that hasn't gone in for the massive lighting thing...yet.

It's pretty crazy being in the desert at night and seeing the Northern Lights shimmering in the sky.

Yep, me too.... I remember going to the mountains just north of where I grew up and being AMAZED by seeing the Milky Way in the night sky and recognizing that each of those stars was a sun in its own solar system. Also, seeing infinite numbers of stars at night when I went to Lake Havasu. This was in the mid - late 70s. It is part of my Bucket List to find a place fairly locally where I can witness this again...

When I was working an aviation contract job in Az. back in 2011, I'd often go out to dry Red Lake (Mohave County), drive out to the middle, put the top down, crank the seat back, and watch the sky for hours. Not at all unusual to see satellites passing over with the naked eye, and "shooting stars" every few minutes.

Thank you. ?  People in their ORVs that cost a small fortune (but those do fly down the dirt road, billowing dust) look surprised that I'm driving this 56 year old pickup.  I'm also finding out the pecking order when meeting on dirt roads with those race cars, since they like the dust so much, I downshift and floor it when they aren't slowing down.  You should see this do donuts, at your campsite. ?

Quick campout Friday and Saturday.  Found this ancient cabin next to a stock tank named Bar Cross.  Has a rodent problem.  Might be mosquitos.  Otherwise great getaway.

Had to move a few rocks to get up this obstacle.

Pleased to figure out where that was, using the Google layer with the County GIS.

Went to the first day of College orientation today. Was actually real nice. My friend is in the same program so it'll be nice. Big school so I may or may not get lost tomorrow but thus far I like the way things are headin'.

Was able to do some yard work, clean the back gutters, and take a 1.5 hour walk yesterday. Since I did whatever I did to my knee a few weeks back, I haven't been able to do much, definitely no heavy work or hiking.

But staying off of it as much as possible has done wonders, and though it's still swollen somewhat, it feels almost right.

I handed in my resignation today. 

So after almost three years, I've left the Ford dealer.

Taking a few days to decompress and reflect and all that.

Next week, I start the new adventure.
