sjordan2 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Those who are into Christmas crafting need to get an early start. Finally, an intelligent observation on this particular subject. Crafters need to start early, never mind the ready-made stuff.
Brett Barrow Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 The HL mess is not about religion but about government taking more and more control over our lives. It not brought under control they WILL come after something you like eventually. My son is a manager for a large drug store chain. They were told to prep for Christmas stuff as soon as school has been in a week.....trying to get a jump on others.....seems they all are doing it.....should be illegal until black Friday!!! Umm, so let me get this straight... You want the government to pass a law dictating when we can and cannot buy and sell Christmas items? Isn't that taking more control over our lives?

Or at least let us get through Halloween before putting that stuff out, any time after that should be fair game.
Harry P. Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 We used to have specific holidays in this country. Now there's so much bleed-over between holidays–we now don't celebrate Christmas but it seems like all of December... after Halloween we are in the "holiday season"...we don't celebrate Thanksgiving Day anymore, it's somehow morphed into Thanksgiving week... it's now the Fourth of July weekend, etc... seems like every day is either a holiday or the day before or after one!
Rob Hall Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 (edited) And the best part of US holidays is most are arranged conveniently for taking 3-4 day weekends...I plan mini-vacations around those. Then there are the strange years where July 4th falls on a Wednesday... Edited July 30, 2014 by Rob Hall

Joe Handley Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 LOL ! Conservatives and libertarians decry any government interference in public life............until it's a cause they want legislated. Funny how that works, huh?

Isn't that taking more control over our lives? Ummm.....Lots of time on your hands??? Try model building!!!!!! I was using the term 'should be illegal' as in morally illegal......corporations shoving each holiday earlier and earlier does nothing positive but add to their bottom line. Spend the same effort helping those in need rather than pushing 'fall decorations' on the first of June. Tough concepts but you have the time.
Rob Hall Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I'm sure sooner or later some retailer will have their Xmas sales starting in May...
Joe Handley Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Hallmark is already peddling their ornaments via their TV channel.
mikemodeler Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 We have a couple of Christmas shoppes here in Charlotte that have Christmas on display all year 'round! I agree that it is silly how the holidays all run together and the Christmas decorations are out too early, but like the religious stuff, if you don't want to see it, turn away!

I suggest model building!

The place is as big as a K-mart! It is truly frightening!
Joe Handley Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 In Frankenmuth, Michigan they have a Christmas Superstore that is open year around! The place is as big as a K-mart! It is truly frightening! I don't mind the occasional small store that specializes on it, it's not that far off of a hobby shop or a craft store so much as I do big stores trying to stretch Christmas season all the way back to July 4th.
kitbash1 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 We used to have specific holidays in this country. And this is one of the reasons that I'm cranky when it comes to Christmas. When I was a young child in the mid 60's, the stores didn't put the christmas merchandise out until after November 11 ( Remembrance Day in Canada ) or the week after. And Eaton's, the biggest department store in Canada at the time didn't officially start Christmas in their stores until they had the Santa Claus parade in Toronto and they opened the christmas windows in the downtown main store.. Then things changed. I can't remember when it started, but christmas merchandise started popping up earlier and earlier in the stores. Then I noticed that christmas was moving away from the real reason for the season, not that I'm a overly religious person or anything like that, but I was starting to get very annoyed with the commercialization of christmas. This has made me very cynical when it comes to this particular holiday. I'm in agreeance with Scrooge, that it's a holiday designed to pick a mans pocket every 24th of December, now more then ever.

Spend the same effort helping those in need rather than pushing 'fall decorations' on the first of June. Tough concepts but you have the time. Say what? You're supposed to build these things? I sorta assumed you were just using a figure of speech, but I just found it rather ironic given the earlier comments you made. I still don't know what "morally illegal" is supposed to mean, illegal only has one meaning where I come from and that means against some law passed by some form of government. As for the stores putting stuff out early - they wouldn't do it if folks weren't buying. And they should look after their bottom line. If folks want to buy Christmas stuff in September, let 'em. Give the people what they want. Because people are going to buy it. They might as well buy it from you.

As someone who's worked in retail forever, I'm right there with you. I hate the Christmas season. I celebrate Christmas on Christmas. That's it. But as I said above, if folks weren't buying, they wouldn't do it.
keyser Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 4th quarter sales results cover Oct/Nov/Dec. All have merchandising holidays. Weak 3rd quarter has July/Aug/Sept. Not a lot of merchandiising save for "back to school". So, creeping into Q3 gets running start for Q4, puffs up end of year. Isn't about Hanukwanzamas. It's about corporate and economic indicators. Not a moral issue. Bidness. Made a lot of money on cyclic stocks like OTC AMT corp. back in 60's.
Rob Hall Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I like Christmas because I take the week off between Christmas and New Years off every year and a day or two before Xmas..so it's a nice quiet vacation period....visit with family, eat well, maybe go to the beach, go the mountains...some downtime at the end of the year to rest.
johnbuzzed Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I like Christmas because I take the week off between Christmas and New Years off every year and a day or two before Xmas..so it's a nice quiet vacation period....visit with family, eat well, maybe go to the beach, go the mountains...some downtime at the end of the year to rest. I feel the same way, Rob. I try to do the same, no matter the circumstances. In other news: A guy I know used to pump gas for a living, when people still did that After working there, he hated Christmas carols. Every year, starting on Thanksgiving, the muzak or whatever they played at that station was all Christmas carols, all the time, 24/7. Did I neglect to mention that he hated Christmas carols? The Hallmark movie channel just had a run of holiday-themed movies. In July... And, I'm sure that no matter where we live, we all have at least one FM station that starts playing Christmas music a few weeks before Thanksgiving. I like Christmas, but there's a point. I mean, I like filet mignon, too,(and maybe I can't spell it correctly) but there are times when a classic Southern cheeseburger is the entree of choice.

I've always had the week between Christmas and New Years off, at all three of my past employers. The thing I like about it is that everyone has that time off so the office stops dead. So there are no calls etc to interrupt your time off, or is there any catching up to do when you return to work in January And of course I have enjoyed my Annual Christmas Model Car Amnesty Build! I recently realized I've been doing this for something like 14 years now. Each year I pull a long stalled project down off my shelf and take the week to finish it! It gets those projects done and on your shelf, as well as being a last minute push to get my overall model car build number up for the year!

Then there are the strange years where July 4th falls on a Wednesday... And conveniently become retail marathons! There is something kinda wrong with a 4 day Presidents Day or Fourth of July sale for Japanese cars.... nothing like them waving flags and parading the red, white and blue for the Mitsubishi Sale-a-thon.... from the same folks who brought you the ZERO!

That would be a cool name for a car... the 2015 Mitsubishi Zero! Down here, we still see holiday sale commercials days after the holiday- whichever one- is over.
Tom Geiger Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 (edited) That would be a cool name for a car... the 2015 Mitsubishi Zero! Down here, we still see holiday sale commercials days after the holiday- whichever one- is over. I've thought that before! In my mind it would be the sport version of the Eclipse convertible. But they wouldn't dare! My wife will be watching some weeks old show that she's saved on the DVR. She'll forget it's not live and watch the commercials for old sales, and sometimes get excited over one of them. Um, that was weeks ago! The Christmas commercials that bother me most are those with very high end cars with bows on them, insinuating that we should be giving them as Christmas gifts. Nobody in my house is getting a new Lexus for Christmas... then at the end of the commercial they pop up the lease deal... Honey, here's your new Lexus, but you gotta give it back in 24 months... here's your payment book! Kinda like giving out library books as Christmas gifts! Edited July 31, 2014 by Tom Geiger
Skip Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 After reading through all 7 pages of this thread I am struck with the fact of how sensitive people in general have become. Can't shop here they display religious items. Can't shop there they put out some "Jesus on the Cross figurines". Can't look at this... Don't look at that... Don't listen..... Seems those whom want the most tolerance for themselves, their cause, their preferences their this, their that are the least tolerant of others preferences or right to do what they choose to hold as convictions whether it be religious or political. It's not just this thread it's pretty much our society in general, beginning to sound like a nursery school where all you hear is "me, me", "mine"... Sadly our society used to be one where we were a community who celebrated out differences by coming together with others who weren't like us, but we all worked and played together for the good of our communities and country in general. I remember going to school with kids of different races and a few different nationalities, I was surprised when I found out we were different and not just kids who went to the same schools; a few of them were as surprised as I was when they found out! ..... End rant I love Hobby Lobby, keep an eye out for things that can either be used for models or repurposed into something that can be used for a model. Scrapbooking aisle holds many such items. Art supplies, cheap chamois squares could be used for tons of upholstery items from ratty to new and cool. Paint brushes from one use and toss to pretty good ones to hang onto for many projects. Glues to bond just about anything. Paint from rattle can to artist oils to use for that aged ratty look... To me Hobby Lobby is like Joann's or Michael's a bit larger yet has stuff for us guys too.
