My friend Bob, you are both smart and wise.

I've rethought my goals and realized that, while having it ready for Phoenix would be Uber Sweet, big picture is that I have to focus on the GSL. I've got other goodies to put on the table.

Good news is that the homemade pinstriping is working perfectly. Now I can unlax and unclench a little.

Joe... this build is looking great. Sorry to hear about the set backs with the tape tack on the paint. Sadurday I will talk to you what I found works best for me with that issue. I use HOK inner coat clear in between color coat and it eliminated any tape tack or bleeding in my opinion. figured it would be easier to explain in person. Keep uo the great work and looking forward to meeting you at the DCS.

Bob, giving it more drying time before I start working it. I'll be on that today.

Chris, I have the airbrush and I've contacted a local parts store for HOK stuff, but I have to wait a couple of months before I move out of my apartment into a house.

On the upside of that, I've already given notice and will soon start looking. I can hardly wait.

Too much stuff to do tomorrow to possibly allow for completion of the car or hauler for DSC. I'll probably need security clearance to get it within 5 feet of Chris' Vega on the "In Progress" table.

Started pinstriping the Dart today and it's looking good. I'm not thoroughly pleased with the turns and corners. It looks great overall, but doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. Since I can't get some Line O Tape to try before the weekend, I won't decal it until I give that a shot. Does that mean I'm willing to pull all of the tape and start over? Yupper. This is already attempt # 2.

As far as the paint damage from the tape, I started with a dry chamois, then alcohol, then enamel thinner. That was enough to tell me it wasn't tape residue. Using all of the caution of a Minion Explosives Techniciian, I lightly started sanding. I only stopped when I finally went through silver into red.

Time for a lesson concerning instincts. I was originally going to only go half height at the front of the hauler sides, leaving a large silver area similar to the rear pillar on the Dart. I realized my boo-boo just before paint, but said to heck with it. Not that that has anything to do with me taping it too early, but now I have a second shot to get it right.

Can't wait to switch to HOK.

Joe......that is alot of work my friend.......but,you have the passion to fix anything that went wrong......I know this will come out fantastic when you get everything just right.......take your time brother you almost got it.

Thank you John. I'm going to have to dip into the "Passion Pool" on this one for sure.

The Deora paint was dry enough, so I'll only have to strip the hauler after this weekend. For display purposes, I'll put a bandaid on the damaged area. :(;)

See ya' Saturday.

Lookin goooood!

And you got the color right too !! Thanks Bruce.

I'm off to Phoenix. Going to be a long weekend, so probably no updates until Monday or Tuesday. I'll dunk the hauler bed in the Purple Pond on Sunday when I get home and take it from there.

Everybody have a great weekend.

Have a great time to bad you didn't get to take it man it's sweet!

Vince

Hi Vince. I had a great time and I took it.

It sat right next to Chris Sobak's in progress Vega. It was an honor and Chris is great people to boot.

I got a ton of advice on how to address the current problems and now I have to go into Mad Scientist mode to sort it all out.

I'll have another update in a couple of days.

In the meantime, here's some pics that Raoul / Sport Suburban took from his PhotoBucket page. My phone was giving me grief all weekend, so Thanx Raoul. Glad you liked it enough to take 5 pics. :D

You should be proud joe even if it's not finished it shows just how much work you have involved even if you busted your rear and I know you had problems that thing is awsome my friend and I will still watching it till its done it only gets better.

Joe glad to hear you had a great time also happy you took it. Do you still think you are going to have to strip the hauler. If the only spot is where the bandaid is you shouldn't have to strip it.

Vince, thanks again. There has been tail busting and there will continue to be until it's done.

Ray, I'm sorry I missed you. I remembered a couple of times to look for your Cobra hat, then John distracted me, then Chris distracted me, then something shiny distracted me.

Hey Bob. I'm probably going to sand it all down on the outside surfaces, then shoot red again and allow PLENTY of time for the paint to cure before masking again. It might be time to invest in a dehumidifier. My only problem that still needs sorting out is the pinstriping. Also, I saw Chris has the magnet installed on the parachute mount. I'll be doing the same thing. What a genius idea that was. Sometimes the simplest things get overthought and overengineered.

I'm usually not like this after a show, but my legs ache and I can't seem to focus. I think it's all more mental (surprise) than anything else. I'll be back on it in a day or so.

Double Ditto Danno. Cross yer fingers for GSL. I'm back to work on it tomorrow as the winds allow. Right now they are 50 mph, slightly less tomorrow.

Hi Joe,

Hope you feeling up to snuff now and can get back on this project. Great to meet you at the show and see all your great looking models in person!!!

Howdy Randy. Yes, I am back up to snuff thank you. Two solid days of aching legs and a dozen cat naps.

There will be progress this weekend, but I have to prep for a contest here at the Riviera Hotel on Saturday. It's an IPMS affair called Best of the West.

I have a few possible solutions for my pinstriping problems. One possible scenario is to shoot a sheet of decal paper with gold, cut out the panels, then lay a smaller version of the red on top.

Brother John T recommended computer board tape, but I haven't found the right stuff yet. So many choices and I'm still looking.

The current plan is to shoot the decal paper tomorrow, give it PLENTY of time to dry, then apply.

I am very frustrated with clear coats these days, I've wiped out 50 bucks worth of decals with clears that attack the red panels on the sheet. I've tried Tamiya that wrinkled, an expensive poly urethane that fish eyed, Rustoleum & Model Master One Coat Lacquer, all with unacceptable results. My airbrush will be up and running in June sometime and that oughta put an end to this nonsense.

One another note, I'm making improvements to the wheel standing U S Dart by correcting a minor wheelbase problem. It's also getting a proper straight front axle with leaf springs, then finally some adjustments where the body interfered with a clean removal in order to take a double exposure pic.

If there's time left, I'll polish out the paint some more on the Big John gasser. I noticed a haze in the sunshine of Phoenix that I didn't see before.

Anywho, I've been busy, just nothing to show for it yet. Good stuff to come. Thanks for everybody's patience.

Chart pack makes 1/32 tape if you don't want to cut it. I'm pretty sure you can get the fine line type in 1/32 also. Maybe try some of the paint supply shops there in vegas?

Off note, how was the Best of the West? We wanted to go but not enough monies for that and GSL, so GSL won out.

Paul

You haz mail.

I want to take a moment to thank all of the folks who advised me on my pinstriping woes. I was ready to test some of those theories when I found out the simplest fix was the one that would work.

Thanks to Paul Mendoza, mr68gts, I've been playing with basic 3M Blue Painter's tape and it does everything I need it to do. The hauler bed is sanded down and ready for a reshoot of red. There WILL BE plenty of time for it to cure before I remask it for the silver.

In the meantime, I'll get cranking on the winch (see what I did there?) and the body dolly.

Pics tomorrow.

Mostly been playing with detail stuff today. I got the hauler bed shot yesterday and I hope to mask it on Saturday. Hopefully 4 days of drying is enough to avoid tape marks.

My brain is on sensory overload because everything I did today is all Eyeball Engineering.

I went a little cuckoo and cut 27 pinstripes on a piece of glass from a picture frame, then sprayed them gold. Letting that dry overnight. I pulled all of the side stripes from the body. If the new gold matches the top stripes, fine. If not I'll pull them too. The top ones were done using a paint pen.

Here's the dolly tires for the new casters. I have seen a pair of smaller tires used for steering purposes, so I'm going with that. I'm using aftermarket 1/72 aircraft tires. They had molded in bottom bulges, but I removed them because I don't think the body and dolly weigh as much as a Messershmitt.

I also got some assembly done on the winch. Gonna need more work and touch up there. It will get PE hex heads and a cable with a hook.

That's it for now. More soon. Thanks for looking.

Thanx Ray and Carl. I appreciate you taking the time to look and comment.

Yes Paul, I'm GSL bound. I've had my flight and room paid for since January. If you want to meet me, look for the guy following John Teresi around like a lost puppy. There should be plenty of opportunities for us to hook up. Also, I'm glad I could return the favor on the striping. :)

I'm 99% certain I might maybe possibly have this done. I always start a list of finishing touches when I near completion. That list has 20 items on it.
