chunkypeanutbutter Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Several people here collect boxes. Some say they throw theirs away after the kit is done. I, myself, keep all of them. They're good for all the parts that I have. I'll grab one of the maybe 12 empty boxes I have upstairs, go to my room, fill the box with whatever cool parts I find that day, and head back up to the workbench with my parts. I have one box that I pitch paint stirrer sticks into. Another is a flat sheet plastic scrap box. One is filled with tires. The others fluctuate in their contents. What do you do with your empty boxes?
DeeCee Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 If it is something that really looks good on the box, i will cut the top part out and keep it, ( why, i have no idea yet), but the rest go straight in the bin, as i have heaps of parts box's and trays etc for all the spare parts.
atomicholiday Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Store finished models in them. Yup. Me too. I don't have a good place to display more than one or two at a time, so the rest get put it 1 gallon zip lock bags and put back in the box. I usually put two in a box, so the bags keep them from getting scratched. And then when they get old and parts start falling off, it's all right there together and nothing ends up lost.
vintagercr Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Mine go into recycling, unless they a vintage box. I like the box art. They take me back to a simpler time.
disabled modeler Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I use my boxes for storage and the old or cool box arts never get cut up(I simply use a thumb tact push through the bottom into my wall and slide the cover over them)makes cool wall art. I enjoy looking at the old box arts...reminds me of much better simpler times and is great for the memories...cant get enough of them.
ZTony8 Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) I'll keep one box of a particular type of model (F1 cars or street rods or a specific make, for example) and store my leftover parts from that subject in that box. Most boxes I just toss out unless it suits an odd sized model that will only go into that shape/size box. I recently obtained many boxes of a perfect size for storing most of my 1/24 and 1/25 scale built ups. They're the boxes that contained the parts for a recall campaign for Chevy Cruze power brake assist. They even contained a small bit of bubble wrap for packing!A Jo-Han Superbird is a tight fit in this box but anything shorter than that goes in quite well. Fabrux Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I am another one that keeps all of my boxes. The boxes for the models I have built and on display are in plastic totes under my basement stairs. My living arrangements are seemingly never permanent, so I need the boxes for moving the built models to the new place. When the time comes to finally buy a house, I may consider tossing them in the recycling, maybe saving a few of the more interesting ones for wall art.

Ace-Garageguy Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Because i always have multiple projects going that are agglomerations of parts from multiple kits, i use old kit boxes to sort donor-kit-parts, gluebomb rescues and stash-parts into the new "kits" that are the new projects. I also use them to sort gluebombs and built-ups that are waiting to get disassembled and recycled. I have several boxes of "junk" '28-'29 Fords, for instance.
rmvw guy Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I always saved them until I started running out of room back in the '80s. They made a nice bonfire. Now I have started saving boxes with vintage box art. I have four I will display with the finished model just like the box art. I have seen other guys do this and I think it's a cool idea. Also old paint cans and jars, glue tubes kind of look neat in a display.
Greg Myers Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Here's the problem, you've got all those boxes with stalled projects, wheels, tires, extra parts. Now try to find something. "Which box did I put those extra engines in ? " "Oh, good i do have two '65 Impala kits." " Doh! One of 'ems full of old tires."
Jantrix Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I cut out the box top and toss the rest. Some day, I'll decorate the hobby room with old box tops.

slusher Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I keep some for projects, store my instructions, and parts in. I throw the rest in the recycle bin...
vintagedragcrazy Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I only keep the really cool ones and trash the rest I just don't have room to keep them all and for parts I go to walmart and get those clear plastic shoe boxes and some of the next two sizes for parts I put a label on end and you can see thru them also and they stack I have about 35 of them full of parts and makes nice storage. DumpyDan Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Toss them unless Steve wants them (vintagercr)
DrGlueblob Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 ...I keep body parts in mine. In fact, you can get a small guy's whole forearm and both disarticulated hands in one Lindberg 1/8 Exterminator box.. Bwahahahaha......
Ramfins59 Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 If a model that I've finished comes out good enough IMHO to enter in a show or contest, I'll use that model's box to transport it with padding to the show's location with other models, all in a larger box with a handle. The larger box can hold up to 6 kit boxes. That way I know which car is in which box. Once the car is "retired" from shows, the box goes to recycling with all of the other empty boxes.
High octane Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I put my kit boxes in the recycling bin as I don't have room in my house for empty boxes.
